Overview

The catalog spans 2,895 assets, including PBR materials, HDRIs, Substance graphs, models, and terrain. That breadth serves more of a 3D pipeline than a texture-only library, although the total collection is finite enough that teams with specialized needs should confirm the required asset exists before building around it.

All assets use Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal. Users may copy, modify, distribute, and use them commercially without permission or attribution. For studios that need predictable reuse rights across commercial work, that removes a meaningful licensing hurdle.

Key features

Asset range and formats

Documented asset types include PBR materials, atlases, decals, plain photo textures, Substance graphs, HDRIs, 3D models, and terrain. JPG and PNG are the stated download formats, so users should match a particular asset's files to their pipeline rather than assume every category has the same delivery options.

Code-based access

The API supports searching and downloading assets programmatically, with v1, v2, and v3 endpoints documented. That can help builders automate discovery or retrieval, but the creator cautions that the API may not be reliable or stable enough for enterprise applications. It is a useful convenience for scripts and non-critical tooling, not a dependency to put on a production-critical path.

Workflow and supporter options

Blender documentation explains how to use ambientCG assets in Blender's Asset Browser, giving Blender users a documented route into an existing workflow. Patreon supporters can receive early access and easier batch downloading, and the homepage also mentions ad-free browsing. Patrons may suggest textures, but suggestions are not guaranteed and the creator does not take contract work.

Pricing

Free access: 0.00 USD per free. It includes access to downloadable CC0 assets, with commercial use permitted and no attribution requirement. There are no stated seat or usage quotas to weigh against the free tier. For most individuals and teams evaluating ambientCG, the free plan is the obvious starting point because its core licensing terms are already commercially usable.

Supporter perks come through Patreon rather than a paid asset license: early access and easier batch downloads can help users who want assets sooner or in larger batches, but they do not guarantee requested textures.

Platforms

ambientCG is available on the web and lists API access across Linux, macOS, and Windows. For Patreon Nextcloud downloads, the official client supports Windows, macOS, and Linux; documented alternatives include Windows Explorer, macOS Finder, WinSCP, Synology Cloud Sync, and other WebDAV clients. The API's stability warning matters more than platform coverage for teams considering an automated dependency.

Who it's for

Choose ambientCG if you need CC0 materials, HDRIs, models, or related assets for commercial 3D art, architectural visualization, games, or VFX and want to avoid attribution obligations. It also suits Blender users who want documented Asset Browser guidance, or developers who want to script asset searches without making the API mission-critical.

Look elsewhere if your pipeline depends on enterprise-grade API reliability, guaranteed custom asset creation, or a particular asset format that a specific download does not provide.

Pros and cons

Commercially permissive CC0 license: assets can be modified and redistributed commercially without permission or credit, reducing reuse friction.
Varied asset categories: the catalog extends beyond materials to HDRIs, Substance graphs, models, and terrain.
Free access: the downloadable collection is available at 0.00 USD per free, with commercial use included.
API caveat: the creator warns against relying on it for enterprise applications, limiting its fit for critical automated pipelines.
No guaranteed commissioned textures: patron suggestions are optional input, not a dependable way to secure a specific production asset.

Alternatives

Poly Haven is another free CC0 library; choose it when its public asset offering, including HDRIs at 16k+ and textures at least 8k, better matches your resolution needs. Its public library has no paywalls or signup requirement, while ambientCG's stated strength is its wider set of documented asset types.

Blendkit is worth considering when a much larger listed collection of models, materials, scenes, HDRIs, and brushes, plus upload and private storage, matters more than ambientCG's CC0 terms. Its free plan includes 200 MiB private storage; the Full plan is listed at 9.90.

Sketchfab is an alternative for teams seeking a freemium 3D model platform with Android and iOS coverage as well as desktop and API access; its Basic plan caps model file size at 50MB. CGAxis is an option for buyers who prefer monthly download credits, with its Essential plan listed at 16.00 USD per month billed yearly and credits allocated by asset type.

Daz 3D offers a free Daz Studio plan with Starter Essentials content and cross-platform exporters, making it relevant when that software and exporter workflow is the priority. LotPixel is another freemium asset source; its Freelance yearly plan is priced at 10.00 USD per year and includes 540 credits, up to 180 assets, single-user terms, and a $150K revenue cap.

3DExport is another freemium option for buyers comparing 3D asset marketplaces. Unity Version Control is a freemium version-control tool rather than a direct asset-library substitute, so choose it for managing project changes, not for ambientCG's asset catalog.

For broader browsing, compare 3D Asset Libraries and Texture Libraries.

Verdict

For artists and teams who need commercially reusable 3D assets without attribution obligations, ambientCG is an easy recommendation: its CC0 library is free and covers more than surface textures. Look elsewhere if API reliability is a requirement for enterprise-critical workflows or if your project needs guaranteed custom assets.
