Overview

Helium combines assignment and exam tracking, recurring study sessions, notes, and class planning with tools for monitoring grades. Its grade calculator gives it a practical edge over a calendar alone: students can model hypothetical scores and calculate what they need on a final to reach a target. That makes it useful for weighing coursework decisions as well as keeping deadlines visible.

The software is open source, with code publicly available on GitHub, and its public REST API covers actions supported by the iOS, Android, and web apps. That creates room for technically capable users to customize or build connections. Helium does not provide official tooling or pre-built integrations, however, and only one API token can be active per account at a time. It is a better fit for individual use or modest customization than setups that depend on multiple concurrent tokens or ready-made connectors.

Key features

Planning and reminders

Month, Week, 3-Day, Day, and Agenda views let students shift between a broad schedule and near-term work. Color coding, filters, search, and drag-and-drop scheduling help keep a busy timetable navigable without forcing one planning style. Native push notifications on iOS, Android, and web, as well as email reminders, cover assignments, classes, exams, and events.

Grades, notes, and calendars

Real-time grade calculations, hypothetical scores, and final-score targets help students see how course results may change. Notes include headings, lists, quotes, links, search, and printing, and can be associated with classes or assignments. Two-way syncing with Google, Apple, and other calendars, including iCal sources, is useful for students who already maintain an external calendar; it reduces the need to choose between Helium and an existing schedule.

API, openness, and data

The public REST API and publicly available source code make Helium more adaptable than a closed planner for users comfortable building their own tooling. The tradeoff is that integration work falls to the user, and the one-active-token cap constrains workflows that need separate simultaneous tokens. Helium says it does not sell personal information and limits sharing to service providers, legal authorities, business-transfer parties, and authorized personnel for stated purposes. User data is stored and processed in the United States. Users can access, export, or delete data through the services, and full schedules can be exported as JSON.

Pricing

Helium’s Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is free for everyone. It includes the planner’s core scope: assignment tracking, exam planning, recurring study sessions, grade tools, notes, reminders, calendar syncing, and API access. There is no paid tier to weigh against the free option, and no seat cap or usage quota is given. The material constraint for API users is one active token per account, rather than a stated price-based limit.

The free plan is a strong fit for students who need a full academic planner without a subscription. Teams or developers needing multiple active API tokens or maintained integrations should account for the extra implementation burden before adopting it.

Platforms

Helium supports web, iOS, Android, and API access, with self-hosted also listed as a platform. Native notifications on mobile and web make it viable across a student’s devices, while calendar syncing helps it coexist with other calendar services. A support portal offers knowledge-base articles, FAQs, and a way to get in touch.

Who it's for

Helium says it suits middle school, high school, college, university, graduate school, and homeschool students. Its grade modeling is especially relevant to learners tracking course outcomes, while the flexible schedule views and reminders serve students managing recurring work and exams. Developers who want to extend a planner through an API may also find it compelling, provided they can work without pre-built integrations and within the one-token limit.

Pros and cons

Pros: Grade calculations include hypothetical scores and final-grade targets, helping students plan around course outcomes rather than just deadlines.
Pros: Two-way calendar sync, multiple schedule views, and push or email reminders bring existing calendars and academic tasks together.
Pros: The free plan, open source code, and public REST API offer substantial room for student use and technical customization without a subscription.
Cons: No official tooling or pre-built integrations means users must build API connections themselves.
Cons: Only one API token can be active per account, limiting use cases that require parallel tokens.
Cons: Data is stored and processed in the United States, which may not suit users with different data-location requirements.

Alternatives

Choose MyStudyLife if its free planner’s five-task-at-a-time limit and first AI timetable scan better match your needs. Power Planner is an option for users who want broader desktop platform support, including macOS and Windows, and can work within its free-plan limits of one semester, five grades per class, one repeating bulk task or event entry, and one photo attachment per item. Pick MyStudyPlanner if a web-only planner with calendar and timetable tools, tasks and assessments, study planning and timer, and Google Calendar import is a closer fit. Fasti offers Android, iOS, and web access with a free cap of 30 events and recurring blocks, which may suit a smaller schedule. Adapt is another free Android, iOS, and web option, with limited revision content and practice questions and ads on its free plan. Altitask is a web and browser-extension alternative whose free plan caps use at three Altitasks, 25 tasks, five projects, five notes, and five forms. Save My Exams is an alternative with free and trial options. Study-Track is another alternative. For more options, see Study Planner Apps or Daily Planner Apps.

Verdict

Helium is a strong choice for students who want scheduling, reminders, notes, calendar sync, and meaningful grade planning in a free planner. Its open API and public code add flexibility for builders, but users who need turnkey integrations, multiple active tokens, or data stored outside the United States should look elsewhere.
