Overview

Android SMS Gateway connects a cloud panel and REST API to an Android handset, letting software send and receive messages through the operator serving its SIM. It was founded in 2011 and is based in Sheridan, Wyoming. Its approach makes the handset and mobile number part of the messaging stack, not just a way to configure a separate sender.

The practical trade-off is control over the sending number against responsibility for the equipment and mobile service. Your team supplies the Android phone, SIM, SMS credit, power and internet connection, and remains subject to operator costs and fair-use rules. Delivery reports and some messaging functions depend on what the device and carrier path support.

Key features

Two-way, SIM-based messaging: Outbound messages use the connected SIM’s real mobile number, and replies can return to its inbox. That can suit teams using SIMs they control for alerts, OTPs or customer replies; it also ties sending to the phone and operator connection.
Messaging tools: Scheduled sending and auto-replies extend the core SMS workflow. MMS and USSD are supported, but USSD requires handset and operator support, and Android 8.0 or newer; the app’s minimum Android version is 5.0.
Spreadsheet campaigns: Excel or CSV imports and column-based personalization support bulk sends without building a separate campaign integration.
API and routing: A REST/JSON API over HTTPS and webhooks cover inbound messages, delivery reports and system events. Examples span PHP, Python, Node.js, Java and C#. Multi-device plans can distribute traffic across phones and SIMs and fail over when a device drops, useful for teams that can operate several handsets.
Security and data: The maker says it uses HTTPS, API keys, two-factor authentication, scoped tokens, session management and security monitoring. It processes account and contact details, usage and device metadata, delivery reports and support correspondence, and says it does not sell personal information for advertising. SOC 2 is on its roadmap; it does not currently have a completed Type I or Type II report, a material gap for teams requiring that assurance.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows one Android device, 300 SMS over its lifetime and 300 contacts. It is useful for a small evaluation, but not sustained production volume. Demo messages append a www.sms-gateway.app footer, so the free allowance is not a clean fit for customer-facing traffic.

Paid plans start at 19.00 USD per month. Starter includes two Android devices and unlimited platform send volume; Professional costs 39.00 USD per month for five devices; Business costs 77.00 USD per month for 15. Those tiers suit progressively larger multi-phone setups, but “unlimited” describes platform send volume, not free carrier service: operator charges and fair-use rules still apply.

Developer costs 50.00 USD per year, billed yearly, and includes one Android device and 25,000 SMS per year. It is the lower-cost annual option for a single-device integration with a defined allowance, but gives up the unlimited platform volume and device capacity of the monthly tiers. Free, Starter and Developer list email support with a 24–48 hour response window; Professional has priority email, while Business adds phone support as well as email. A free trial is offered, alongside the Free plan.

Platforms

The service spans Android, API and web. The Android requirement makes this a poor fit for teams that cannot maintain a compatible handset, continuous power and connectivity, or an operator SIM.

Who it's for

It is best suited to developers and teams that control their SIMs and want software-triggered OTPs, alerts, transactional messages or campaigns to travel through those mobile connections. It is less suitable when a team needs messaging without device operations, wants carrier costs bundled into a platform fee, or requires an existing SOC 2 report.

Pros and cons

Pro: Messages use a real number on a SIM the team controls, with replies able to return to that handset’s inbox.
Pro: REST/JSON, webhooks and multi-device routing support both integration and scaling across phones.
Con: The customer must provide and maintain the phone, SIM, power and internet, and pay operator costs separately.
Con: The free allowance is lifetime-capped at 300 SMS and demo sends carry a product footer, limiting its value for live use.
Con: Delivery reporting and some features depend on device or carrier support, and there is no completed SOC 2 Type I or II report.

Alternatives

Choose simhook if a self-hosted option matters: it offers a free whole-stack plan with no limits, while its hosted free plan is capped at 30 messages a day, 500 a month, one phone and 25 recipients per send. Telerivet may suit a smaller allowance with automated services: its free tier includes 50 messages a day, 50 stored contacts and two automated services; the paid Starter plan is 49.00 USD per month.

Bird Verify is a fit when verification is the specific need: verification has no separate fee, but channel message charges apply. Clickatell SMS API suits teams seeking pay-as-you-go outgoing messaging, with prices varying by destination and message type; its Connect plan is aimed at enterprise SMS via API. OpenVox SMS Gateway is another free-start option, with essential features to get started.

Ozeki SMS Gateway is worth considering for a paid gateway that spans Android, Linux, self-hosting and Windows; its listed entry plan costs 1490.00 EUR per once for 5 messages per minute, one service-provider connection and 10 users. For per-message U.S. pricing without a subscription, Smstools lists SMS messaging to the U.S.A. at 0.03 EUR per once, with volume discounts. BulkGate is another pay-as-you-go alternative; its United Kingdom SMS rate is 0.03 EUR per once, excluding VAT, and varies by country and operator. Compare more options in SMS Gateway Software.

Verdict

Android SMS Gateway is a sensible choice for developers and teams that want API-driven messaging from SIMs they already control, especially when two-way replies and multi-phone routing matter. Its defining advantage is sending from a real mobile number; its defining cost is taking responsibility for the phones, connectivity and carrier spend. Look elsewhere if you need a device-free service, bundled carrier costs, or completed SOC 2 assurance.
