Overview

Apache Druid is an open-source database for real-time analytics across streaming and batch data. It suits teams building user-facing analytics or interactive exploration that depend on fresh results and high query concurrency. Its performance-focused design is compelling for those workloads, but it asks operators to run a distributed system and configure security themselves.

Druid's ingestion, query, and orchestration components are loosely coupled, with deep storage supporting scale-up and scale-out deployments. The project reports millisecond OLAP queries over datasets with billions to trillions of rows and use cases ranging from hundreds to 100,000 queries per second; actual performance depends on deployment and workload. Apache Druid 37.0.0 is the latest stable release, dated May 8, 2026, and the software and documentation use the Apache License, Version 2.0.

Key features

Streaming and batch ingestion

Native Kafka and Amazon Kinesis integrations support low-latency ingestion and query-on-arrival, with ingestion designed for millions of events per second and guaranteed consistency. Druid also accepts batch data from object stores, databases, and files. This combination is useful when teams need one analytics system for incoming events and larger historical datasets.

Indexed storage and query choices

On ingestion, Druid columnarizes, time-indexes, dictionary-encodes, bitmap-indexes, and compresses data. That structure is geared toward fast analytical queries, rather than broad-purpose text search. Teams can query with Druid SQL or JSON-over-HTTP native queries, and use joins during ingestion or at query time.

Scaling, reliability, and operations

Separately scalable ingestion, query, and orchestration components help teams adapt capacity to workload, while deep storage supports distributed deployments. Continuous backup, automated recovery, and multi-node replication address durability and availability needs. The web console can load data, manage datasources and tasks, inspect server status and segments, and run SQL or native queries.

Core extensions cover storage, metadata stores, formats, and authentication, with integrations including S3, HDFS, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Kafka, Kinesis, Avro, ORC, Parquet, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. That breadth helps Druid fit into varied data stacks, though teams still have operational integration work to do.

Pricing

Apache Druid: 0.00 USD per free. The open-source analytics database is downloadable for self-hosting, with real-time ingestion and SQL. There are no paid tiers or per-seat charges in this plan; the tradeoff is that deployment and operation are yours to manage. The local quickstart requires at least 6 GiB of RAM and Java 17.

Platforms

Druid is available for API use, Linux, macOS, self-hosting, and the web console. Its quickstart supports Linux, Mac OS X, and other Unix-like systems; Windows is not supported. It is designed to run on commodity hardware in *NIX environments and in AWS, GCP, Azure, and other cloud environments.

Who it's for

Druid is a strong fit for teams serving low-latency, high-concurrency analytics, exposing fresh data in user-facing applications, exploring data ad hoc, or analyzing streaming events as they arrive. The combination of SQL, native queries, and broad ingestion integrations gives builders options for fitting it into an existing stack.

It is a weaker fit for teams seeking a managed, turnkey database or a full-text search engine for text logs. The project says Druid is not commonly used for full-text log search, though it can ingest and analyze semi-structured data such as JSON. Security also needs deliberate setup: TLS, authentication, and authorization are disabled by default and must be configured for production. Documented authentication extensions include HTTP Basic, LDAP, and Kerberos.

Project help is available through Slack and GitHub, and commercial support providers include Cloudera, Datumo, Deep.BI, Imply, and Rill Data.

Pros and cons

Fast analytical query design: Columnar storage and multiple indexes target millisecond OLAP over very large, high-cardinality datasets.
Fresh streaming data: Kafka and Kinesis integrations support query-on-arrival, which suits applications that cannot wait for batch refreshes.
Flexible interfaces and integrations: SQL, JSON-over-HTTP queries, and extensions across storage systems and formats can fit diverse stacks.
Distributed reliability features: Backup, recovery, and multi-node replication address resilience for production analytics.
Operational burden: Self-hosting means teams must manage distributed components and production security configuration.
Not a log-search specialist: Teams centered on full-text search over text logs should choose a more suitable tool.

Alternatives

Confluent Cloud is a managed, serverless Kafka option with autoscaling resources and more than 80 managed connectors; choose it when managed streaming infrastructure matters more than a self-hosted analytics database.

Apache Flink is a free, open-source alternative for teams choosing a streaming platform rather than Druid's analytics database.

Apache Pinot is another open-source distributed OLAP database to consider when comparing self-hosted analytical stores.

Apache Spark is a free, open-source data analytics engine, and may suit teams seeking that broader engine instead of Druid's real-time analytics database.

Apache Storm is a free, open-source alternative.

Feldera offers a free open-source edition with single-node deployment, full SQL support, and all connectors; consider it when that edition's single-node shape fits.

Materialize offers a self-managed community license capped at 24 GiB memory and 48 GiB disk, as well as a cloud capacity plan; it is an option when those deployment terms fit better.

Pathway Live Data Framework offers self-hosted free plans with caps of 8 GB or 16 GB RAM; consider it when those resource limits suit the workload.

Verdict

Choose Apache Druid if your team needs a self-hosted analytics database for fresh streaming or batch data, with high concurrency and low-latency queries as priorities. Its indexing, ingestion integrations, and distributed design make that case strong. Look elsewhere if you need full-text log search, a managed service, or a system without production security and operations to configure.
