Overview

Kong Gateway is an open-source API gateway for teams routing traffic across microservices and distributed systems. It is best suited to organizations that need to fit gateway operations around hybrid, multi-cloud, Kubernetes, or self-hosted infrastructure. Its deployment and configuration range is a meaningful strength, but teams should weigh plan-specific request limits and the lack of native Windows installation before committing.

Key features

Kong describes its NGINX-based engine as handling more than 50,000 transactions per second per node. That stated capacity may suit high-throughput services, though it is one part of a broader operational decision, not a substitute for evaluating the gateway against a team’s own workload.

Operators can configure the gateway through an API, web UI, or declarative configuration, with changes managed through CI/CD pipelines. That variety accommodates different operating practices, from direct administration to configuration-as-code. Deployment can be on premises, in cloud environments, Kubernetes, or serverless, with or without a database, and in hybrid or cloud-hosted modes. Teams gain room to match infrastructure, but also need to choose and maintain an approach that fits their estate.

Built-in plugins address security, authentication, transformation, and analytics, and the Plugin Development Kit lets teams develop their own. This makes Kong adaptable when standard gateway behavior is not enough; it also favors teams able to own plugin choices and configuration. Kong Ingress Controller configures the gateway with Kubernetes-native resources and supports traffic management, transformations, and observability across clusters, making it a relevant option for Kubernetes-centered operations.

Konnect Plus lists REST, HTTP, LLM, Kafka, WebSocket, gRPC, and GraphQL support. The broader supported protocol set also includes UDP, TCP, and TLS. Authentication options include Basic Auth, HMAC, JWT, Key Auth, LDAP, mutual TLS, OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML, and Vault. Rate limiting, request transformation, traffic policies, fallback routing, API cataloging, lifecycle management, access policies, analytics, API product management, virtual API keys, and multi-cluster support cover a wide range of API management needs. The breadth is useful for teams consolidating gateway controls, though not every capability should be assumed to have identical availability across plans.

Pricing

Kong Gateway Open Source costs 0.00 USD per free. It provides the open-source API gateway, with no paid-plan limits stated on the product page. It is the clearest starting point for teams prepared to operate an open-source gateway; it does not itself establish the plan limits or support terms of Konnect tiers.

The Konnect Free trial costs 0.00 USD per free, is billed for 30 days, requires no credit card, and includes Enterprise functionality with no Gateway limits. Analytics are retained for 30 days. This gives teams a time-limited way to evaluate Enterprise functionality without a gateway quota, but the trial term and analytics retention cap matter for longer evaluations.

Konnect Plus has custom pricing, charged per Gateway per month and billed monthly. It includes up to 5 serverless gateways, 2 hybrid gateways, and 2 dedicated cloud gateways, plus 1 million API requests per month; each additional million requests costs $200/month. Email support has a two-business-day SLA. This tier suits teams wanting managed gateway capacity with a defined included request allowance, but the per-Gateway charge and overage rate call for forecasting traffic and deployment counts.

Konnect Enterprise has custom pricing billed annually. It has no Gateway limits, includes unlimited developer portals and published APIs, and offers fully self-hosted API gateways. Enterprise also lists dedicated customer success and technical account managers with higher SLAs. The annual term and custom quote make it a better fit for organizations needing scale, self-hosting, and higher-touch support than for teams seeking predictable entry-level pricing.

Kong's pricing page identifies RBAC and marks SSO and audit logs as Enterprise features, so teams with those access and governance requirements should account for tier selection. The entry-level paid price is 25 /mo, but the plan and terms attached to that figure are not identified in the available tiers, so it should not be treated as a like-for-like quote for Konnect Plus or Enterprise.

Platforms

Kong Gateway supports API, Linux, self-hosted, and web environments. Linux installation options include packages and binaries, Docker images, and Kubernetes deployment instructions. Windows installation requires Docker; Kong does not offer a native Windows installation method. That constraint is manageable for container-based teams, but a poor fit for organizations requiring a native Windows deployment.

Who it's for

Kong is strongest for platform and API teams operating microservices across hybrid or multi-cloud infrastructure, especially where Kubernetes-native management, multiple configuration styles, protocol breadth, and extensible plugins matter. Its self-hosted options and broad deployment modes suit teams that need control over placement. Teams that want a simple, single deployment path, native Windows installation, or clear upfront Konnect pricing should look elsewhere or assess alternatives before adopting it.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple deployment modes, including on-premises, cloud, Kubernetes, serverless, hybrid, and self-hosted, give infrastructure teams flexibility to fit existing environments.
Pros: API, UI, and declarative configuration provide distinct operating paths, including CI/CD-managed changes.
Pros: Built-in and custom plugins, Kubernetes-native configuration, and broad protocol and authentication support make it adaptable to complex API estates.
Pros: The Free trial has no Gateway limits and requires no credit card, while Enterprise includes unlimited developer portals and published APIs.
Cons: Konnect Plus has finite gateway allowances and includes one million monthly requests; extra millions cost $200/month.
Cons: Plus and Enterprise both use custom pricing, and Enterprise is billed annually, making cost comparison less direct.
Cons: Native Windows installation is unavailable, so Windows deployments need Docker.
Cons: SSO and audit logs are Enterprise features, which may place those governance controls beyond lower-tier plans.

Alternatives

Gravitee API Gateway is worth considering when a free Apache 2.0 community edition or Windows platform support is a priority; its page also gives a Planet price of 2500.00 USD per month.

Tyk API Management is an option to compare when a flat-rate Professional plan with unlimited gateways, APIs, and monthly requests is more important than Kong's stated Plus allowances; its pricing details are custom.

Zuplo may fit a smaller deployment looking for a permanent free tier capped at 100,000 requests per month, with two account members and five environments.

Stigg is another freemium option: its free Build plan includes 10,000 managed entities, 5 million usage events per month, and 1,000 events per second.

Moesif offers a freemium plan and free trial for teams comparing API-focused tools with Kong.

Revenium provides a free Observe plan with 100,000 transactions per month, seven days of retention, one user, and community support without an SLA.

Apigee API hub is available at no additional cost to eligible Apigee organizations in supported regions, for Apigee and Apigee hybrid.

Sentinel EMS is another paid API platform to compare.

Verdict

Choose Kong Gateway if your team needs an extensible API gateway that can span Kubernetes, self-hosted, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure, and can take ownership of its configuration and plugins. Its main advantage is deployment and control flexibility; its main drawbacks are custom Konnect pricing, Plus request and gateway caps, and the absence of native Windows installation. Teams needing simpler pricing or Windows-native deployment should compare alternatives before choosing a tier.
