Overview

Audiobookshelf is a free, open-source server for organizing and serving personal audiobooks and podcasts. It best suits households and teams willing to operate their own server; the broad library toolkit is compelling, but remote access and complete backups remain your responsibility.

Key features

Multiple users can have distinct permissions, with playback progress synced across each person’s devices. That makes a shared server practical for a household without mixing listening positions. Metadata and cover art lookup from several providers helps keep a library organized, while chapter editing and lookup, metadata embedding, and audio-file merging into one M4B address common audiobook maintenance tasks.

Podcast discovery and automatic episode downloads make Audiobookshelf more than a shelf for finished books, and open RSS feeds let users access podcasts and audiobooks through feed readers. Beta Android and iOS apps support offline listening, useful when away from the server but worth weighing against the beta status. Basic ebook support includes EPUB, PDF, CBR, and CBZ, an ereader, and an option to send books to a device such as Kindle. These are useful library extras, not a reason to choose it over a dedicated ebook platform.

Scheduled backups protect the database and cover images in the metadata directory, but omit media files and covers stored with library items. Treat them as a partial safeguard and maintain separate backups of the media collection and any item-level covers.

Pricing

The Audiobookshelf self-hosted server is free. The free, open-source plan includes the audiobook and podcast server, with no paid plans. That is a strong fit for users who can supply and maintain their own server; the trade-off is that the plan does not remove the work of installation, remote access, or backups.

Platforms

Audiobookshelf supports Android, iOS, Linux, Windows, web, and self-hosted use, and provides an API. Docker is the recommended installation method, with Linux, Windows, and Podman options also documented. Mobile apps on iOS and Android support offline listening.

Remote access is not built in. You must configure a VPN or reverse proxy, and the server serves unencrypted HTTP, so deployment and access security need deliberate attention. The project accepts security reports through GitHub private vulnerability reporting, email, or private Discord message, but response times vary. Community client apps are neither maintained nor security-tested by the project, and outdated API endpoints in some clients can cause problems. Support is directed to Discord and GitHub. The project began as a passion project by advplyr, who remains its main maintainer and contributor.

Who it's for

Choose Audiobookshelf if you want control over a shared audiobook and podcast library, value per-user playback sync, and are comfortable operating self-hosted software. It is a poor fit if you want remote listening to work without configuring network access, expect the project to cover all backup needs, or prefer a ready-to-use commercial catalog.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multi-user permissions and synced playback make one server useful to several listeners without merging their progress.
Pros: Chapter tools, metadata handling, M4B merging, podcast downloads, and RSS access cover meaningful library-management needs.
Pros: The server is free and open source, with beta mobile apps that support offline listening.
Cons: Remote access requires your own VPN or reverse proxy, and the server uses unencrypted HTTP.
Cons: Scheduled backups exclude media files and covers stored with library items, requiring separate backup coverage.
Cons: Beta first-party mobile apps and community clients with variable maintenance or outdated endpoints may be a concern for teams seeking a tightly supported client ecosystem.

Alternatives

For a broader set of audiobook choices, browse Audiobook Apps. Choose Sora for free ebooks and audiobooks on Android, iOS, or web. Bookmate is a better fit for a short trial of a freemium service: its Premium offer gives seven days free and includes books, comics, audiobooks, podcasts, uploads, and offline reading and listening.

Hoopla suits readers with a valid card from a participating public library and an email address; its available titles depend on the library catalog. Pick Playary if you want a free service spanning songs, podcasts, movies, audiobooks, and TV shows, with an ad-free Premium option. Google Play Books Auto-narrated Audiobooks is for publishers who own an EPUB offered on Google Play and want to create, publish, and download auto-narrated books at no charge for a limited time.

Libby is a free app for borrowing from a library, provided you have a library card and the title is in that library’s collection. AudiobooksNow suits buyers who want discounts on eligible titles through a paid club: Monthly Club Pricing is 4.99 USD per month after a 30-day free trial, with 50% off the first audiobook each month and 35–40% off other eligible titles.

Verdict

Its library tools and free price are strong reasons to choose it; the need to secure remote access yourself and protect media with separate backups are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere.
