Overview

Apple Podcasts is a podcast listening service that pairs a broad free catalog with optional creator-priced subscriptions. It suits listeners who want their shows across Apple devices and other supported playback options; its strongest case is broad access without a required subscription, while premium prices and benefits vary by creator.

Alongside audio, the service supports video, private feeds, downloads, transcripts, and cross-device sync. The range of playback options is useful for listeners moving between devices, though transcript support is limited to select languages.

Key features

Offline listening and new episodes

Any episode can be downloaded for offline playback, and new episodes from followed shows can download automatically. That makes it a practical choice for commutes or other listening without a reliable connection, without limiting downloads to a paid tier.

Video and transcripts

Video podcasts give creators another format beyond audio. Transcripts support reading and search, as well as chapter navigation and jumping to a point in an episode. These tools can make long episodes easier to navigate, but their usefulness depends on transcript availability in the listener’s language.

Subscriptions and creator tools

Creators can offer paid shows, episodes, and channels, setting monthly or annual subscription prices. Subscriber benefits can include ad-free listening, bonus content, unreleased episodes, and other exclusive material, but the exact offer depends on the creator. Subscriptions can be shared with up to five people through Family Sharing; subscriptions from select App Store apps, Apple News+, and Apple Music can also be connected.

Creators receive 70% of subscription revenue initially and 85% after one year of paid service, excluding applicable taxes. Other podcast revenue, including advertising, goes to the creator. Creator tools cover production, analytics, audience connections, and paid subscriptions.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it means
Free shows	0.00 USD per free	Millions of shows are available without charge; no usage cap is stated.
Premium subscriptions	Custom pricing	Creators set monthly or annual prices. Benefits vary by subscription.

The free catalog is the clearest fit for listeners who want broad access without recurring cost. Paid subscriptions are for listeners who value a particular creator’s extras; there is no single standard premium price, so the cost depends on the shows or channels selected. Cancel at least one day before renewal to avoid another charge. After cancellation, access continues until the date shown on screen.

Platforms

Apple Podcasts is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV 4K, and Apple Vision Pro, as well as on the web at podcasts.apple.com. Windows access is through iTunes. CarPlay, HomePod, smart speakers, and supported car systems extend playback beyond personal devices; CarPlay is available in over 800 car models.

That breadth is a strength for households and listeners who switch between devices or use car audio. Windows users get access through iTunes rather than a separately named Windows app.

Who it's for

Apple Podcasts is a strong fit for listeners who want a large no-cost catalog, offline playback, and continuity across supported devices. It also suits fans willing to pay individual creators for extras, particularly when Family Sharing can extend a subscription to up to five people.

It is less compelling for anyone who needs a predictable all-in-one premium price or transcripts in a particular language that is not supported. For creators, the subscription tools and stated revenue share are relevant, but the service is primarily a listening destination rather than a substitute for comparing dedicated creator platforms.

Pros and cons

Pros: Millions of shows are free, with no stated usage limit; listeners can download any episode and automate downloads for followed shows.
Pros: Video, searchable transcripts, chapter navigation, and jumping within episodes offer more ways to consume and navigate content.
Pros: Support across Apple devices, web, Windows via iTunes, CarPlay, HomePod, smart speakers, and compatible car systems accommodates varied listening setups.
Cons: Premium pricing and benefits vary by creator, so total subscription cost depends on the shows chosen.
Cons: Transcript support covers only select languages, limiting that feature for some listeners.
Cons: Renewal requires attention: cancellation must happen at least one day before the renewal date to avoid another charge.

Alternatives

For another iOS and macOS option, Overcast has a free plan and a premium option that hides visual podcast advertisements; its listed platform range is narrower than Apple Podcasts’.

Pocket Casts is a stronger candidate for teams or listeners needing Android, iOS, desktop, web, and Windows coverage. Its free tier includes listening, discovery, and web and desktop access; Plus is 3.99 USD per month.

Castro is another freemium option for iOS and macOS, with a 3.99 USD per month Castro Plus plan that includes advanced playback features and device synchronization.

Consider Castbox if Android or web access is important; its premium plan removes visual and video ads and adds unlimited subscriptions, advanced playback settings, and a personalized homepage.

Player FM is an alternative freemium app for Android, iOS, and web, with monthly premium and annual Pro options.

Podbean is a better fit when publishing constraints matter: its free plan specifies 5 hours of storage, 100GB monthly bandwidth, three episodes per day, a 100MB single-file limit, and 20 episodes in the RSS feed.

Fountain may suit listeners who prioritize transcripts and summaries, with a 2.99 USD per month Premium plan that includes unlimited episode transcripts, summaries, and playlists, plus disabled promotions.

iVoox is another freemium option for Android, iOS, and web, with creator publishing and fan subscriptions.

Verdict

Choose Apple Podcasts if you want a large free catalog, offline listening, and playback across a wide range of devices, with the option to support individual creators. Look elsewhere if you need consistent premium pricing or dependable transcripts in a specific language.
