Overview

Kitsu brings task scheduling, review, asset tracking, reporting, and time and budget tools into a studio-oriented workflow. Production leads can assign work and balance workloads, while dashboards show progress and an activity feed follows changes to subscribed tasks in real time. That focus is more compelling for content-production teams than for organizations seeking only a general task tracker.

Studios can use CGWire’s cloud service, hosted in Europe with updates, backups, monitoring, and video processing handled as part of hosting operations, or run the AGPL open-source software themselves. Self-hosting avoids a per-user hosting plan, but leaves infrastructure, backups, monitoring, security, and upgrades to the customer. CGWire says it will not sell personal data and will sign an NDA when required.

Key features

Planning and production visibility

Teams can schedule tasks, assign them to artists, and balance workloads. Progress dashboards and the subscribed-task activity feed give leads both a broad production view and a stream of changes. Budget forecasting and time tracking across assets and shots add useful production controls, though teams that do not manage creative deliverables are unlikely to benefit from this specialization.

Review and asset history

Playlists organize shots and assets for review, and retained preview versions make comparison part of the workflow. Kitsu tracks asset versions, related tasks, and progress, with a library for reuse. Those connections are valuable when teams need review and asset history to remain attached to production; a review-only workflow may not need the wider production system.

Integrations and API

Publishing integrations cover digital content creation tools, while notifications can go to chat applications. Developer documentation names Blender, Toon Boom Harmony, Unreal Engine, Slack, Discord, and Mattermost. REST API access, a Python client, a JavaScript SDK, and a command-line interface give technical teams several routes to integrate Kitsu with existing tooling.

Pricing

Kitsu is freemium, with a free self-hosted option and paid cloud plans billed annually per user. The cloud plans bundle hosting and different storage, support, and capacity levels, so the right tier depends on team size and how much review media the studio handles.

Self-hosted: Free and open source, with self-managed infrastructure, backups, monitoring, security, and upgrades. It suits teams able to operate the service themselves; the trade-off is that the work and responsibility of keeping it running stay in-house.
Agency: €20 / month / user, billed annually, for 1–20 users. Includes mutualized hosting, 100GB storage, and basic support with a response time under 48 hours. This is the entry cloud tier for smaller teams that can work within its seat and storage limits.
Production: €30 / month / user, billed annually, for 1–100 users. Adds high availability, a search engine, a playlist builder, 3TB storage, and premium support with a response time under 24 hours. It fits growing studios that need those workflow and service upgrades.
Studio: €35 / month / user, billed annually, for 1–300 users. Includes high availability, search, playlist building, 10TB storage, and diamond support with a response time under 12 hours. Larger studios with heavier media needs get more capacity and faster support, at a higher per-user cost.
Artist Schools: 3999€ a year for up to 100 students. The student cap makes this the relevant paid option for schools rather than studio teams.
Enterprise: Custom pricing for unlimited users, with on-premise installation, Single Sign On, contractor synchronization, multiple instances and regions, a staging environment, and media encryption. This tier is for organizations needing those deployment and administration capabilities.

A 14-day trial includes all features and unlimited user access, but runs on low-end hardware unless a stronger setup is arranged with the team. Studios with particularly intensive preview loads should contact CGWire to estimate extra storage costs. The trial is useful for evaluating the workflow, but its hardware conditions may not represent the experience a production team expects at scale.

Platforms

Kitsu supports web and Linux environments, offers API access, and can be self-hosted. Its API clients and integrations make it a practical option for teams that need to connect production tracking to studio tools rather than work in an isolated web application.

Who it's for

Kitsu is best suited to animation, VFX, and game studios that want planning, review, asset versioning, proofing and approvals, client portal access, time tracking, and production reporting in one system. It is a weaker fit for teams that need only lightweight project tracking, or studios without the operational capacity for self-hosting that cannot justify paid per-user cloud plans.

Pros and cons

Pros: Planning, review playlists, version history, and progress reporting connect production work instead of splitting those tasks across separate workflows.
Pros: REST access plus Python, JavaScript, and command-line tools give developers multiple integration paths.
Pros: Cloud tiers scale from 100GB to 10TB storage and offer faster support at higher levels.
Cons: Cloud pricing is per user and billed annually, so total cost grows with the team.
Cons: The free self-hosted edition shifts backups, security, monitoring, and upgrades to the customer.
Cons: Trial hardware is low-end by default, and high preview volumes may add storage costs.

Alternatives

For a broader directory of project tools, see Creative Project Management Software.

Runnit has a free plan for up to five people, with 500 shared AI credits per month and 1GB storage; consider it when that smaller team cap and allowance fit better.
Dart has a free Personal plan for up to four teammates, with unlimited tasks and documents plus AI agents, task execution, and reporting; choose it when that scope and platform range better suit the team.
FlowQi offers a free Basic plan with unlimited users, projects, and tasks, one Circle, 500MB storage, and 1,000 MCP calls per month; it may fit teams seeking a general collaboration workspace with those limits.
Frame.io has a free plan capped at two members, two projects, and 2GB storage; it is worth considering when a smaller review and media-sharing scope is enough.
ReviewStudio has a free Starter plan with unlimited users and guests, three active reviews, and 5GB storage; it is an option when review volume is the main constraint to manage.
Ziflow offers a free tier with unlimited proofs and reviewers, capped at two users, 2GB storage, one workflow stage, and 60 days of review history; it may suit proofing needs that fit within those limits.
Polimake is another freemium option for teams comparing creative workflow tools.
Streamtime offers custom-priced subscriptions with monthly or annual billing, with annual plans charged at a lower rate; consider it when that subscription structure is a better fit.

Verdict

Choose Kitsu if your animation, VFX, or game studio needs production planning, asset history, review, and reporting to work as one process, and you value API access for fitting it into your stack. Look elsewhere if you need only a narrow review tool or cannot take on self-hosting and find the annual per-user cloud cost hard to support.
