Overview

Arm Keil MDK is an embedded development toolchain for Cortex-M and Ethos-U projects, aimed at developers who need Arm-focused device support, compiler tools and debugging workflows. Its strongest case is a broad toolchain with modular software packs; the main trade-offs are the Windows-only μVision host and paid commercial editions.

Key features

Toolchain and software packs

MDK v6 brings together Keil Studio extensions for Visual Studio Code, Keil μVision, Arm Compiler for Embedded and Arm Fixed Virtual Platform models. Software packs add device and board support, middleware, components, code templates and example projects independently of the core toolchain. That modularity suits teams assembling support for particular targets without treating every resource as part of the IDE.

Workflows, debugging and integrations

Developers can work through an IDE or command line, including in continuous integration workflows. Keil Studio's VS Code pack supports CMSIS workflows and provides an integrated debugger and extensions to create, build and test applications. The feature set also includes integrated flashing, RTOS support, and CMSIS-DAP, ULink and third-party debug adapters.

MDK v6 includes CMSIS-FreeRTOS, Keil RTX5, MDK-Middleware and IoT clients. Its Network middleware uses Arm Mbed TLS for TCP/IP security. Professional adds Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, a FuSa C library and a functional safety run-time system, making that edition more relevant to teams with functional-safety requirements than to projects that only need the core development workflow.

Pricing

Keil MDK has a free Community plan for non-commercial use, with Keil Studio, Keil μVision and Cortex-M device support. It is the entry point for non-commercial Cortex-M work, but its stated scope does not cover commercial use or all Cortex-M cores.

The Essential and Professional plans are priced as custom pricing and each includes 1 license per user. The paid MDK v6 editions have explicit monthly per-license prices:

Plan	Price	Includes	Best fit
Keil MDK v6 Essential	99.00 USD per month, billed $99.00/ month per license	Commercial use, all Cortex-M cores, μVision, VS Code extensions and API access	Commercial teams needing the core v6 toolchain across Cortex-M targets.
Keil MDK v6 Professional	199.00 USD per month, billed $199.00/ month per license	Includes Essential, Arm Virtual Hardware, Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa and legacy tools including Arm Compiler 5	Teams that need virtual hardware, functional-safety tooling or legacy compiler support.

Both v6 plans are licensed per license, so the monthly cost scales with the number of licenses needed. Essential gives up the Professional edition's virtual hardware, FuSa tools and legacy tools; Community, meanwhile, is restricted to non-commercial use and Cortex-M device support.

Platforms

MDK supports Linux, macOS and Windows desktop environments, as well as API, extension and web platform categories. Command-line workflows help avoid dependence on one IDE, but μVision itself runs only on Windows hosts. Teams standardizing on μVision therefore need Windows, while VS Code and command-line workflows offer alternatives within MDK.

Supported targets include Arm Cortex-M, Armv8-M, SecurCore and legacy Arm microcontrollers, Ethos-U processors and Fast Models.

Who it's for

Keil MDK is a strong fit for embedded teams building for Arm microcontrollers and Ethos-U, especially those that value Arm compiler, debugger, middleware and device-pack support in one environment. Community suits non-commercial Cortex-M work; commercial teams can choose Essential for broad Cortex-M coverage or Professional when FuSa, Arm Virtual Hardware or Arm Compiler 5 matters.

It is less suitable when a team requires μVision on Linux or macOS, or when its needs do not justify a per-license commercial plan. Arm provides support cases, a community forum, documentation and learning videos.

Pros and cons

Broad Arm target coverage: Cortex-M, Armv8-M, SecurCore, legacy microcontrollers, Ethos-U and Fast Models support varied Arm embedded projects.
Flexible development workflows: IDE, command-line and continuous-integration use, plus integrated debugging and flashing, suit both interactive development and automated builds.
Modular project resources: Software packs separate device and board support, middleware, templates and examples from the toolchain.
Commercial costs are per license: Essential and Professional monthly prices multiply with user licenses, while Essential omits Professional's FuSa, virtual hardware and legacy tools.
μVision is Windows-only: This constrains teams that depend on that IDE but standardize on Linux or macOS hosts.

Verdict

Choose Keil MDK for Arm embedded projects that benefit from its target coverage, compiler and debugger workflow, and independently addable software packs. The Community edition gives non-commercial Cortex-M work a starting point, while commercial users should weigh Essential's $99 monthly per-license cost against Professional's additional FuSa, virtual hardware and legacy-tool support. Look elsewhere if Windows-hosted μVision is a requirement you cannot accommodate, or if those Arm-specific capabilities do not warrant the paid license.
