Overview

AssemblyAI gives product teams APIs for transcription, speech analysis, and voice applications, with managed-cloud and self-hosted deployment options. It is best suited to developers who need more than a transcript and want usage-based billing; teams should weigh model-specific language coverage and free-tier limits before choosing a model.

Key features

The Speech Understanding API combines transcription with speaker diarization and identification, summaries, action items, sentiment analysis, key phrases, entity and topic detection, formatting, language detection, translation, PII redaction, and content moderation. That breadth helps teams turn audio into structured product data without assembling separate speech-analysis functions. For a basic transcription workflow, the additional capabilities may be unnecessary.

Language coverage depends on the model. Universal-2 supports 99 languages, Universal-3.5 Pro supports 18, and Universal-3.6 Pro Realtime supports 32. The streaming options differ too: Universal-Streaming is English-only, while Universal-Streaming Multilingual supports English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and Italian. Translation reaches 86 languages. Teams serving multilingual users should select against their required languages, not the platform-wide total.

AssemblyAI states that its streaming and voice-agent services deliver sub-300ms latency and that its platform handles more than 800 million API calls per month. Those stated figures make it a candidate for real-time and high-volume products, though latency and scale claims alone do not establish how a particular workload will perform.

Security provisions include TLS 1.2+ encryption in transit, AES-256 encryption at rest, zero data retention, and an option to opt out of model training. AssemblyAI maintains an annually audited SOC 2 Type 2 report and conducts annual third-party penetration tests. These are relevant safeguards for teams evaluating sensitive audio and compliance requirements.

Developers get an API, Python and JavaScript SDK guidance, documentation, cookbooks, support resources, a changelog, and service-status page. Official integrations span tools including LiveKit, Pipecat, Zapier, Make, n8n, Twilio, Amazon Connect, LangChain, Vercel AI SDK, and Cloudflare, giving teams multiple routes to connect it to existing workflows.

Pricing

AssemblyAI uses pay-as-you-go billing with no minimum commitment, upfront fee, contract, or monthly subscription requirement. Usage is invoiced monthly in arrears, and audio is prorated to the second on the listed pay-as-you-go plans. This structure suits workloads that vary month to month, but teams need to estimate usage rather than rely on a fixed subscription budget.

Free credits: $0.00 per free, with $50 in audio credits, five new streaming connections per minute, and five concurrent pre-recorded transcriptions. The connection and concurrency limits constrain free evaluation or low-volume deployments.
Free tier: $0.00 per free, with up to 185 hours of pre-recorded transcription, up to 333 hours of streaming transcription, and five new streaming connections per minute. The monthly-hour allowances make this a substantial starting point, but the connection cap is still relevant for streaming applications.
Universal-2: $0.15 USD per month on the usage-billed plan, or $0.15 USD per month billed per hour of audio on the hourly listing. It covers 99 languages and supports 200+ concurrent pre-recorded transcriptions, making it the broad-coverage, lower-price speech-to-text choice.
Universal-3.5 Pro: $0.21 USD per month, billed monthly based on actual usage or per hour of audio, depending on the plan listing. It supports 18 languages and 200+ concurrent pre-recorded transcriptions; custom rate limits are available on the hourly plan. The higher rate and narrower language set make it a considered model choice rather than a default for multilingual teams.
Universal-Streaming: $0.15 USD per month, billed on usage or per hour of audio. It is English-only; free accounts allow five new streams per minute, while paid accounts allow 100+ starting sessions per minute.
Universal-Streaming Multilingual: $0.15 USD per month, billed per hour of audio, for English, Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, and Italian. Its six-language scope is useful for common multilingual streaming needs, but not equivalent to Universal-2’s 99-language coverage.
Universal-3.5 Pro Realtime: $0.45 USD per month on the usage-billed plan, supporting 18 languages and 100+ starting sessions per minute on paid accounts.
Universal-3.6 Pro Realtime: $0.45 USD per month, billed per hour of audio. It supports 32 languages and adds context carryover and conversation memory, for teams that need those realtime capabilities.
Voice Agent API: $4.50 USD per month, billed per hour of connected conversation time. Managed orchestration and hosting are included, with no per-layer add-ons or concurrency fees, simplifying cost structure for voice-agent deployments.

Platforms

AssemblyAI supports API, web, and self-hosted use. The choice between managed cloud and running models in a customer environment lets teams weigh deployment control against operating their speech stack themselves. API access and SRT and VTT export support common application and subtitle workflows.

Who it's for

AssemblyAI is a strong fit for developers building transcription, conversational analysis, or voice-agent features into products, particularly when they need speaker labels, structured speech insights, or control over deployment. The free allowances and usage billing support evaluation and variable demand. It is less compelling for a narrow, English-only transcription need if its broader analysis capabilities and model choices add complexity without serving the product.

Pros and cons

Pro: Speech analysis spans diarization, summaries, action items, sentiment, entities, and moderation, useful when products need more than raw transcripts.
Pro: Managed cloud and self-hosting give teams a meaningful deployment choice.
Pro: No contractual or monthly subscription commitment, with second-level audio proration, accommodates uneven usage.
Con: Language coverage varies substantially by model, from 99 languages for Universal-2 to 18 for Universal-3.5 Pro and 32 for Universal-3.6 Pro Realtime.
Con: Free streaming is capped at five new connections per minute, which limits its fit for concurrent streaming products.
Con: The published rates differ by model and billing description, so teams must match the workload to the correct plan rather than compare a single headline rate.

Verdict

Choose AssemblyAI if your product needs speech analysis as well as transcription, with the flexibility to use managed or self-hosted deployment and pay for actual usage. Its broad feature set and deployment choice are the strongest reasons to shortlist it. Look elsewhere if the required languages do not match the chosen model, or if the free streaming connection cap is too restrictive for your use case.
