Overview

Teams can express a desired schema in HCL, SQL, or an ORM format and have Atlas compare it with a database’s current state, generate a migration plan, and execute it. That approach suits teams working from a declared target schema, while those who need only a narrow migration utility may not need its broader planning and validation features.

Atlas is open-core: its core engine is available under Apache 2.0, while advanced features are in proprietary versions. The open version supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, TiDB, and LibSQL. Pro adds drivers including SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and Databricks, making plan choice consequential for teams using those databases.

Integrations include Kubernetes, Terraform, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, CircleCI, Bitbucket Pipelines, Azure DevOps, and a Go SDK. These provide several routes for fitting Atlas into infrastructure and CI/CD workflows. Related categories include Database Migration Tools and Database Testing Tools.

Key features

Schema planning and migration control

Atlas compares the live database with a desired HCL, SQL, or ORM schema, then generates and executes a migration plan. Schema diffing and rollback support give teams tools for managing change in both directions. The mixed-format workflow offers flexibility, though the practical value depends on whether a team can represent its desired schema in one of the supported forms.

Safety and drift checks

Atlas can lint and validate migrations, run safety checks, and test schemas and migrations. It also supports drift detection and CI/CD automation. Together, these features make it a more compelling fit for teams that want migration checks in their delivery process than for teams seeking only a way to apply schema changes.

Registry and operational safeguards

Pro’s Atlas Registry manages up to 500 root objects; nested columns, indexes, foreign keys, and comments do not count toward that limit. Atlas Cloud is described as using multi-availability-zone replication, automated failover, and daily encrypted backups, with 99.9% uptime. Ariga says it has undergone SOC 2 Type II audits since 2022 and that Atlas handles database information schema and metadata rather than customer database records.

Pricing

Atlas Starter is free to use. It includes limited inspection and diffing, limited database support, and MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, and SQLite. It is a sensible starting point for teams evaluating the core workflow on those databases, but the inspection and diffing limits and narrower support list constrain it as a full production choice.

Atlas Pro (Team) costs $9 per developer, per month, plus usage-based pricing for CI/CD pipelines and databases. It includes 50 CLI seats, 90-day history retention, and up to 500 root objects. CI/CD projects cost $59/month, including 2 target databases; each additional target database costs $39/month. The plan adds broader database support, including SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, and Databricks, so teams using those drivers need Pro. The per-developer price is only part of the cost when CI/CD projects or extra databases are needed.

Atlas Schema Monitoring costs $39/month per monitored database. It includes a schema changelog, ERD and schema documentation, column-level data lineage, Security Graph and CVE scanning, and drift detection and alerts. It fits teams that need ongoing visibility and monitoring; the per-database charge makes the total rise with monitored estate size.

Atlas Enterprise has custom pricing and starts from 20 databases. It offers customizable plans, Enterprise SSO, premium support and a custom SLA, air-gapped network deployment, and offline CI/CD licenses. Those deployment and support options address larger or more controlled environments, but the 20-database starting point makes it a poor fit for smaller deployments.

New users can try Pro free for 30 days; continuing to use Atlas Pro afterward requires a license. Starter support is through GitHub and Discord, Pro includes business-hours support, and Enterprise has a custom SLA.

Platforms

Atlas is available through API, Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted deployments. The combination gives teams both operating-system options and a self-hosted route, useful where deployment control matters.

Who it's for

Atlas suits teams that manage evolving database schemas through declarative workflows and want migration safety checks, CI/CD automation, and integrations with infrastructure tooling. Its open engine offers a starting point for supported databases, while Pro is relevant when teams need additional drivers or Registry capabilities. Ariga says Atlas serves organizations from startups to Fortune 500 companies, across financial services, healthcare, cybersecurity, e-commerce, manufacturing, education, government, and cloud vendors.

Look elsewhere if a team needs only a lightweight migration tool, if its database is outside the open version’s support, or if Pro’s seat and usage charges do not fit its deployment scale.

Pros and cons

Pros: Declarative schema comparison generates executable migration plans, reducing the gap between a target schema and the changes needed to reach it.
Pros: Linting, validation, safety checks, testing, rollback, and drift detection cover multiple points in the migration lifecycle.
Pros: Apache 2.0 core and integrations spanning CI/CD and infrastructure tools give teams several ways to adopt Atlas within an existing stack.
Cons: The free plan limits inspection and diffing and supports fewer databases, so teams with broader requirements will need to evaluate Pro.
Cons: Pro’s $9 per-developer monthly charge is supplemented by CI/CD and database usage charges, complicating cost planning as usage grows.
Cons: The Registry’s 500-root-object ceiling and Pro’s 90-day history retention may constrain teams with larger schemas or longer audit needs.

Alternatives

Bytebase Enterprise is worth considering for teams that prefer a database-instance-oriented plan: its free Community tier supports up to 20 users and 10 database instances, while Pro is $20.00 USD per month, billed per user, with 10 database instances.

Liquibase is another freemium option, with Starter covering up to 5 applications and 1 database type and requiring a professional services package for onboarding and implementation.

SchemaHero is a free alternative for teams seeking an option available on Linux, macOS, self-hosted deployments, web, and Windows.

Skeema offers a free Community plan with tables, stored procedures and functions, 18 linter checks, Linux and macOS support, and Apache 2.0 licensing; its Plus plan is $124.00 USD per month.

Alembic is a free, MIT-licensed open-source option for self-hosted use.

GitHub Accessibility Scanner is another free option, available on Linux and macOS.

Doctrine Migrations is a free alternative.

FluentMigrator is a free option for Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows environments.

For teams focused specifically on data lineage, see Data Lineage Tools.

Verdict

Choose Atlas if your team wants declarative schema planning with migration safeguards and integrations that can fit into an existing CI/CD and infrastructure stack. Its open-core approach makes it approachable on supported databases, while Pro extends database coverage and adds Registry capacity. Look elsewhere if the free tier’s limits are too restrictive or Pro’s developer, pipeline, and database charges outweigh the value of its broader workflow.
