Overview

Founded in 2013, ATLauncher combines a built-in pack catalog with support for packs from ATLauncher, CurseForge, Modrinth, Technic, and FTB. It also supports pack imports and exports for CurseForge .zip and Modrinth .mrpack, making it useful for players moving between pack ecosystems. Playing still requires a purchased Minecraft account, so the free launcher does not remove that cost.

Its own platform is no longer accepting new pack submissions. ATLauncher recommends Modrinth or CurseForge for sharing new packs, which makes it a poor choice for creators looking to publish into the ATLauncher catalog.

Key features

Separate instances: Install multiple instances of a pack without changing earlier installs. That is useful for keeping distinct configurations intact, though players must manage each copy separately.
Java and accounts: The launcher selects the Java version a pack needs and supports multiple Mojang and Microsoft accounts, as well as Xbox Game Pass subscribers. This reduces setup friction for players switching packs or accounts.
Mod management: Instance tools can automatically download and install mods, maps, and resource packs from CurseForge and Modrinth. That gives players a way to maintain content within an instance rather than assembling each addition manually.
Backups and servers: One-click save backups help protect progress, while built-in tools let users create and run servers for ATLauncher modpacks. These are practical extras for players who want local pack management and server setup together.
Open source: The launcher is open source, which may suit users who value inspectable software. ATLauncher does not accept new submissions to its own pack platform, however, so openness does not make it a current publishing destination.

Pricing

ATLauncher costs 0.00 USD per free, with no trial or launcher charge. That makes it an uncomplicated choice for players who already own Minecraft and want a launcher without a subscription. The free plan still requires a paid Minecraft account to play modpacks, so it is not a way to play without buying the game.

Platforms

ATLauncher runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its download page also offers a Jar download alongside Windows, OSX, and Linux options, giving Java-capable users another distribution route.

Who it's for

Choose ATLauncher if you play modpacks from several supported sources, want isolated instances, and value Java selection, save backups, mod management, and server tools in one launcher. It is less appropriate for pack authors seeking to submit new releases to ATLauncher, or for anyone who does not have a purchased Minecraft account.

Pros and cons

Pro: Multiple supported pack sources and import/export formats make it practical for players working across different modpack ecosystems.
Pro: Separate instances, automatic Java selection, one-click backups, and server tools cover several recurring parts of modded play in one app.
Pro: It is free and open source on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Con: Playing still requires a purchased Minecraft account, so the free price covers only the launcher.
Con: New packs cannot be submitted to its own platform, limiting its usefulness as a publishing venue for creators.

Verdict

ATLauncher is a strong fit for Minecraft players who want a free, open-source desktop hub for packs from several sources, with separate instances, automatic Java selection, backups, and server tools. Its main limitation is the account requirement for play, and pack creators must share new releases elsewhere if they want a new submission destination.
