Overview

Fing combines asset inventory with security checks across a hybrid network scope. It can identify devices, report their type, brand and model, and flag unknown devices when they connect. Router checks target known vulnerabilities, outdated firmware, DNS hijacking risks and exposed management interfaces. This gives home users and small service teams useful context for investigating changes or auditing a client network, though it is not a substitute for a broader security platform when that is what the job requires.

Scheduled discovery and SNMP discovery are supported, and the service is available across Android, iOS, web, Windows, macOS, Linux, API and self-hosted environments. Fing Desktop is available for Windows and macOS, but not Linux. Fing says it is SOC 2 Type II certified. It was founded in 2009 by Carlo Medas and Marco De Angelis and became part of Lansweeper in 2020.

Key features

Router and device visibility

Scheduled router checks look for several practical exposure and maintenance issues, including outdated firmware and exposed management interfaces. Unknown-device alerts include device identity details rather than just signaling that something new appeared. That is useful for household troubleshooting and quick client audits, but the free plan's scan cap and subscription-only scheduled security checks make it a poor choice for teams seeking always-on coverage at no cost.

Camera scans and always-on monitoring

Fing scans connected Wi-Fi networks for cameras and spy devices against a database of more than 12 million known camera models. This can help users check a network for recognizable devices, but the database-based scan should not be treated as proof that a space is free of surveillance devices.

Fing Agent can run on Raspberry Pi, Docker or NAS for 24/7 automated security checks. That gives technically capable users an always-on option without relying on a desktop session. Home Assistant, IFTTT and the Fing Local API support presence data, network events and custom automation, making Fing a more natural fit for automation-minded households than for organizations that need a large, tightly integrated security operations stack.

Pricing

Plan	Price	Includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	Up to 3 scans per day, internet speed tests, network and ISP reporting, and troubleshooting tools
Premium	7.99 USD per month, billed Monthly	2 monitored networks, continuous scans, advanced security and network control
Professional	16.99 USD per month, billed Monthly	3 + monitored networks, shared workspaces, multi-user collaboration and advanced reporting

Free is suited to occasional checks and basic troubleshooting, not ongoing security: scheduled vulnerability scans and continuous threat detection require a subscription, and the plan allows up to three scans per day. Premium is the entry point for continuous scans across two monitored networks, which suits a household or small operation with limited network scope. Professional adds shared workspaces, collaboration and reporting alongside coverage for three or more monitored networks, a better fit for consultants or small teams auditing multiple environments. The paid plans are monthly billed; Fing says payment data is encrypted and sent directly to its PCI DSS-compliant processor, Stripe, and that it does not collect or store card or bank details.

Platforms

Fing's platform coverage spans Android, iOS, web, Windows, macOS, Linux, API and self-hosted deployment. Desktop support is narrower than that list suggests: Fing Desktop is for Windows and macOS, while Fing Agent's Raspberry Pi, Docker and NAS options provide the always-on route for users comfortable running an agent. SNMP discovery, scheduled discovery and hybrid discovery broaden its usefulness in mixed environments.

Who it's for

Fing is a sensible choice for people who want an at-a-glance view of home network devices, router checks and alerts when an unfamiliar device connects. IT consultants, MSPs and small businesses can use it to audit client networks and monitor security, with Professional's shared workspaces and multi-user collaboration better aligned to team workflows. The free tier works for occasional investigation, while subscription plans are necessary for continuous scans and threat detection. Organizations that need a Linux desktop client should look elsewhere, and teams whose primary requirement is extensive network operations tooling may find Fing's stated focus too narrow.

Pros and cons

Pros: Combines asset inventory, SNMP and scheduled discovery with router vulnerability checks, so users can connect device visibility with common router risks.
Pros: Unknown-device alerts provide brand, model and type, adding useful context when a new connection appears.
Pros: Fing Agent supports Raspberry Pi, Docker and NAS, with Home Assistant, IFTTT and Local API integrations for automation.
Cons: Free is capped at three scans per day and excludes scheduled vulnerability checks and continuous threat detection, limiting it to occasional use.
Cons: Fing Desktop is not currently available for Linux, despite Linux appearing among the platform options.
Cons: Premium covers two monitored networks; broader team collaboration and reporting require the more expensive Professional plan.

Alternatives

For inventory-first work, LOGINventory may suit teams that want a free allowance of 20 devices or a paid Inventory360 plan priced at 6.50 EUR per year, billed All prices exclude VAT. OCS Inventory is worth considering when open-source software and a community-developed project are priorities. runZero has a free Community Edition with 100 assets, one organization, 10 recurring tasks and 30 days of data retention, which may suit readers who can work within those stated limits.

Readers comparing broader categories can browse Network Discovery Software and Network Monitoring. Infoblox Cloud Network Automation uses token-based licensing with custom pricing, while Domotz, FirstWave opEvents, NetBrain and BMC Helix Discovery are other options to compare.

Verdict

Choose Fing Security if you want device discovery, router checks and practical alerts in one service, especially for a home network or small client-audit practice. Its integrations and agent options give it useful reach beyond manual scans, but the free plan is only an occasional-check tier and continuous security costs extra. Look elsewhere if Linux desktop support or a broader network operations platform is essential to your stack.
