Overview

AWeber is an email marketing platform for small businesses, pairing newsletters and automated campaigns with landing pages and ecommerce tools. It suits businesses that want email, audience tools, and developer access in one service, though teams needing dedicated mobile apps should look elsewhere.

Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Chalfont, Pennsylvania, AWeber focuses on permission-based communication with prospects and customers. Its range extends from opt-in forms and blog-post notifications to web push notifications, online sales, and payment plans.

Key features

Campaigns and audience workflows

AWeber supports broadcast newsletters, automated message series, audience segmentation, A/B testing, and landing pages. Its automation templates are largely built in advance and can be customized before activation, which gives small teams a starting point without limiting them to fixed workflows. The practical trade-off is plan capacity: Free includes one automation, Lite three, and Plus removes the automation cap.

Email creation supports drag-and-drop, HTML, and plain-text editors, with more than 700 responsive HTML templates. AI tools can draft newsletters and emails, generate subject lines, and help build signup forms and landing pages. These options cover multiple parts of campaign production, while teams that require more lists, users, or segments need to account for Lite's caps.

Commerce, integrations, and API

AWeber supports product and service sales, subscriptions, payment plans, sales tracking, and purchase tagging. Payments can be collected through Stripe in more than 100 currencies. Its integrations include more than 750 tools, including Shopify, WordPress, PayPal, Facebook, and Zapier; Zapier or Pabbly can extend connections to thousands of applications.

The REST API and webhooks let developers add subscribers, send campaigns, retrieve analytics, and manage lists. Integrations connecting to a customer account require OAuth 2.0. This makes AWeber relevant to teams that need to connect email activity to existing systems rather than operate only through its web interface.

AWeber says it encrypts data in transit and at rest, monitors systems continuously, maintains backups, assesses risks, and uses DDoS mitigation. It also says it does not sell customer, subscriber, advocate, or visitor information. Support is available around the clock by phone, live chat, and email; Plus receives priority 24/7 support, while Lite includes 24/7 support. A free account migration handled by AWeber's team can reduce the work of switching.

Pricing

AWeber offers a free plan, a 14-day trial, and annual-billed paid tiers. The trial automatically converts to a paid subscription when the 14 days end, so users should plan to cancel before then if they do not want billing to begin.

Plan	Price and term	What it includes
AWeber Free	0.00 USD per free	Lifetime access; up to 500 subscribers and 3,000 emails monthly; one list profile, one workflow automation, and one landing page. Free-plan sends include AWeber branding, and no credit card is required.
Lite	12.49 USD per month (billed annually)	Unlimited subscribers and monthly sends up to 10 times subscriber volume; one email list, three landing pages, three automations, three users, and one custom segment. Paid plans remove AWeber branding.
Plus	19.99 USD per month (billed annually)	Unlimited subscribers and monthly sends up to 12 times subscriber volume; unlimited lists, landing pages, automations, custom segments, and users.
Unlimited	899.00 USD per month (billed monthly)	Unlimited subscribers, full feature access, and up to 15 sends per subscriber monthly.
Hold Package	4.99 USD per month	Temporarily pauses an account while preserving its data.
Done For You	20.00 USD per month (billed annually)	Includes Plus and email marketing setup completed in 7 days, with 30 days of unlimited edits; a $79 setup fee is shown, regularly $599.

Free is a useful low-commitment option for a small audience, but the 500-subscriber and 3,000-email monthly ceilings, single workflow, and branding constrain ongoing use. Lite suits a small operation with one list and modest collaboration needs; its three-user, three-automation, and one-segment limits can become restrictive as the program grows. Plus is the more suitable tier for teams running multiple lists or workflows, or needing broad segmentation and user access. Unlimited is aimed at organizations with much larger subscriber volumes, but its $899.00 USD monthly price makes it a substantial step up. Done For You is for buyers who want setup included rather than handling initial configuration themselves.

Platforms

AWeber is available on the web and through its API. Dedicated mobile apps have been retired, so phone and tablet users access the service through its browser-based mobile website. That is a meaningful limitation for teams that require a native app for mobile campaign work.

Who it's for

AWeber is a strong fit for small businesses and entrepreneurs who want newsletters, automations, landing pages, and ecommerce functions together, especially when integrations or API access matter. The free migration service and 24/7 support also suit organizations moving from another email platform. It is less suitable for teams that need several lists and workflows on a low-cost tier, native mobile apps, or a free plan without branding.

Pros and cons

Broad email toolkit: Campaigns, automations, segmentation, A/B testing, landing pages, and ecommerce tools cover more than newsletter delivery alone.
Extensive connectivity: More than 750 integrations, plus a REST API and webhooks, give builders several routes for connecting campaigns and account data to an existing stack.
Low-friction entry: The free plan requires no credit card and supports up to 500 subscribers, though its monthly email cap is 3,000 and sends carry AWeber branding.
Clear Lite constraints: One list, three users, three automations, and one custom segment can force growing teams to upgrade to Plus.
Trial converts automatically: The paid subscription begins at the end of the 14-day trial unless the user acts beforehand.
No dedicated mobile apps: Mobile access is browser-based, which may not fit teams that need native phone or tablet applications.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, compare Email Marketing Software, AI Newsletter Generators, Nonprofit Email Marketing Software, and AI Email Marketing Software.

Mailjet is worth comparing if a free plan with a 6,000-email monthly allowance, 200-email daily cap, 1,000 contacts, and API, SMTP Relay, and webhooks better matches the sending pattern.
Sender may fit teams prioritizing a larger free audience and monthly volume: its Free Forever plan supports 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails monthly, with one seat and Sender branding.
Audienceful is another option for a small team looking for a free plan with 1,000 contacts, one team collaborator, and one automated journey.
Twilio SendGrid is an alternative for API-focused users comparing an API-only platform with a free trial capped at 100 emails per day and 100 contacts for 60 days.
GetResponse is another freemium option with a free plan, free trial, and Android, iOS, web, and API access.
DirectIQ is an alternative for buyers considering a no-monthly-commitment, pay-as-you-go email model.
Litmus is a paid alternative with a free trial and web, API, and extension access.
Privy is a paid alternative with email and pop-up/display plans and a free trial.

Verdict

Choose AWeber if your small business needs a connected email toolkit with ready-to-adapt automations, ecommerce capabilities, and API access. Its breadth and integration reach are the main reasons to select it; look elsewhere if you need native mobile apps, more generous free limits without branding, or several lists and segments on the entry paid tier.
