Overview

CodeBuild runs build scripts without requiring teams to provision, manage, or scale build servers, and it adjusts capacity for builds. That is useful for CI/CD workloads whose demand varies, or for teams running existing Jenkins jobs and building code hosted on GitHub. It is less compelling if the goal is a standalone build system rather than managed cloud execution.

The service fits naturally into an AWS-centered stack: it can take source from CodeCommit, GitHub, GitHub Enterprise, Bitbucket, Amazon S3, or CodePipeline, and work with Jenkins and CodePipeline for delivery. Artifacts can go to S3 or be uploaded to an artifact repository by a build command. CodeDeploy and Elastic Beanstalk are available in CodePipeline delivery workflows, rather than as direct delivery integrations described for CodeBuild.

Key features

Environments and build configuration

Preconfigured environments cover Java, Python, Node.js, Ruby, Go, Android, .NET Core for Linux, and Docker. Teams can also bring Docker-based environments of their own. This gives projects a choice between familiar starting points and custom containers, while the build steps and settings are defined in a YAML build specification. Teams that need repeatable, phase-based build commands can keep that configuration explicit; maintaining it is part of using the service.

Access, artifacts, and visibility

IAM integration supports granular access controls, and build artifacts are encrypted with AWS KMS-managed or customer-managed keys. CodeBuild displays build timing, status, and commit ID, streams metrics and logs to CloudWatch, and can send SNS notifications about project events with links to related resources. These controls and signals are useful in an AWS operations workflow, though CloudWatch Logs and other connected services may add to the bill.

Pricing

AWS CodeBuild pay-as-you-go: 0.00 USD per free. This is usage-based billing for compute resources, with charges determined by build duration and selected compute type. The included monthly allowance is 100 build minutes on general1.small or arm1.small with on-demand EC2, or 6,000 build seconds on lambda.arm.1GB or lambda.x86-64.1GB with on-demand Lambda. The free allowance makes evaluation and modest workloads possible without an upfront subscription; it does not make higher usage free.

Duration billing depends on the compute option: on-demand EC2 build time rounds up to the nearest minute, Lambda time to the nearest second, and each reserved EC2 instance has a 60-minute minimum charge. Teams with short builds should account for EC2 rounding, while reserved capacity can be a poor fit for brief or intermittent runs. Data transfer and services such as CloudWatch Logs, S3, KMS, and CodePipeline may also incur charges, so the compute price alone is not the full cost of an AWS pipeline.

There is no free trial. The pay-as-you-go plan is the available plan described here; no seat-based subscription is stated.

Platforms

CodeBuild is cloud-hosted and supports API, Linux, web, and Windows platforms. Its stated capabilities also include mobile targets, signing management, store submission, hosted macOS, and deployment targets, making it relevant to teams with mobile build and release workflows as well as conventional software builds.

Who it's for

Choose CodeBuild when managed build execution, flexible build environments, and integration with AWS sources, permissions, logging, and delivery workflows matter more than running a self-managed build system. It is a particularly sensible fit for teams already using CodePipeline, S3, IAM, or CloudWatch. Teams should look elsewhere if they want a free open-source build system they can run across local or self-hosted environments, or if their cost model depends on avoiding usage-based compute and related-service charges.

Pros and cons

Pro: No build-server provisioning or scaling to operate; CodeBuild manages capacity for builds.
Pro: Multiple source integrations and configurable Docker-based environments accommodate varied repository and build setups.
Pro: IAM, KMS encryption, CloudWatch metrics and logs, and SNS notifications support AWS-oriented access and monitoring workflows.
Con: Usage-based compute billing, EC2 minute rounding, and reserved-instance minimums complicate estimates for short or irregular builds.
Con: Data transfer and associated AWS services can add costs beyond build compute.
Con: The service is cloud-hosted; teams seeking a self-hosted, open-source build system should consider alternatives.

Alternatives

Gradle is a free, open-source build system for teams that want a no-charge tool across API, Linux, macOS, and Windows rather than managed AWS build execution.
Google Cloud Build is worth considering for teams already targeting Google Cloud; its default-pool plan includes 2,500 free build-minutes per billing account each month, then bills $0.006 per build-minute.
Bazel is a free open-source build and test tool for teams seeking a build system across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Nx may suit teams wanting a broader monorepo and CI workflow option: its free Hobby plan includes 50,000 monthly-reset credits, five contributors, and 10 concurrent CI connections.
Buck2 is a free build system from Meta for teams seeking an open-source alternative.
Meson is a free open-source build system for teams who prefer a no-charge alternative.
Pants offers an Apache License 2.0 open-source option for teams that want a no-charge build system.
Rush is a free, open-source JavaScript monorepo manager for teams whose build workflow centers on JavaScript monorepos.

Verdict

CodeBuild is the right choice for AWS-oriented teams that want managed, configurable build execution without operating build servers. Its integrations and security and monitoring hooks are the strongest reasons to choose it; usage-based compute costs, billing minimums, and possible charges from adjacent services are the reasons to compare alternatives before committing.
