Overview

Skill Builder spans fundamental through advanced AWS learning, with more than 1,000 free resources, including over 900 self-paced digital courses. That breadth makes it practical for exploring AWS topics before committing to a subscription. Its AWS focus is also its boundary: it is a fit for people building AWS capability, not a one-stop catalog for training across cloud providers.

Paid subscriptions add guided practice and exam-preparation resources. Subscription courses are available only as part of a subscription, and neither Individual plan includes live classroom training or AWS Certification exams. Treat Skill Builder as a learning and preparation service, not as a way to buy an exam or attend a live class.

Key features

Practice and exam preparation

Individual subscribers get AWS Builder Labs, game-based learning, AWS Jam challenges and a no-fee sandbox environment, alongside exam-preparation courses with guided labs and Official Practice Exams. The combination is more useful than video instruction alone for learners who want to practice while studying. It still leaves the certification exam itself outside the subscription.

Digital Classroom

AWS Digital Classroom courses provide self-paced digital training based on classroom courses. They are included with the Individual annual and Team subscriptions, not the monthly Individual plan. The annual upgrade therefore makes sense for learners who want this classroom-derived material without attending live training.

Team administration and identity

Team administrators can assign and track training, with reports covering course enrollment, labs, AWS Cloud Quest, active users and AWS Jam event challenge results. Company-credential sign-in is supported when an organization has SSO integration, with ADFS, Azure AD, Ping and Okta listed as supported identity providers. Teams also receive a technical account manager for technical support questions. These controls make the Team plan more appropriate than individual subscriptions for managed learning, though its seats may only go to the purchasing company’s employees and contractors.

Mobile access

Learners can browse, search and enroll from phones and tablets, but labs and game-based learning are best experienced on a laptop or workstation. Mobile access is useful for finding and starting courses, not a substitute for a full workstation when practical exercises are central.

Pricing

Skill Builder is freemium. Free learning resources cost 0.00 USD per free and include 1,000+ learning resources. The free catalog is a substantial entry point, but paid subscriptions add the immersive learning and exam-preparation resources described above.

Individual monthly subscription: 29.00 USD per month, billed $29 / month. It includes self-paced digital training, exam prep and immersive learning experiences. Choose it for a shorter commitment or to access paid individual content without paying annually; it does not include AWS Digital Classroom.
Individual annual subscription: 449.00 USD per year, billed $449 / year. It includes the monthly plan content plus AWS Digital Classroom. It suits learners who want that additional training and expect to use the subscription over the year.
Team subscription: 449.00 USD per year, billed $449/year per seat, for teams of 5 or more. It adds team administration and reporting, AWS Digital Classroom and a technical account manager. AWS Classroom Training is not included, and seats are limited to employees and contractors of the purchasing company.

Individual subscriptions exclude live classroom training and AWS Certification exams. Subscription courses are accessible only as part of a subscription, so ongoing access to them depends on keeping a subscription.

Platforms

AWS Skill Builder is available on the web. Mobile phones and tablets support course browsing, search and enrollment, while labs and game-based learning are better suited to a laptop or workstation. Its cloud-provider focus is AWS.

Who it's for

Choose Skill Builder if your goal is to build AWS cloud or AI skills, prepare for AWS certification, or give an AWS-focused team a way to assign and monitor training. The free resources work for initial exploration; individual subscriptions suit learners who need labs and exam practice, while Team fits organizations with at least five seats and a need for administration. Look elsewhere if you need live classroom instruction, the certification exam itself, or a broad multi-cloud training catalog.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 1,000 free learning resources, including over 900 self-paced courses, provide substantial room to learn before subscribing.
Pro: Paid individual plans combine labs, sandbox practice, game-based learning and Official Practice Exams, linking study with practical preparation.
Pro: Team reporting spans course activity, labs, AWS Cloud Quest and AWS Jam results, giving administrators several views of learner engagement.
Con: The paid catalog is subscription-dependent; subscription courses are available only as part of a subscription.
Con: Subscriptions do not include live classroom training or AWS Certification exams, so they do not cover those parts of a training or credentialing plan.
Con: Team seats require at least five seats and are restricted to the purchasing company's employees and contractors, limiting use for mixed external audiences.

Alternatives

For a broader set of Cloud Training Platforms or MOOC Platforms, compare the category options before committing to AWS-specific training.

CloudLabs is a paid web and API option for VM labs; its CloudLabs-managed subscription is 6.00 USD per month per active user, with cloud consumption passed through at cost. Consider it when managed lab environments matter more than a course-and-exam-prep subscription.
Pluralsight is a paid option with a 10-day free trial and a Core Tech plan at 449.00 USD per year. Consider it if you want a training platform available across web, mobile and desktop operating systems rather than an AWS-only service.
ExamPro has a free tier with a free practice exam and full access to course videos. It is worth comparing if that combination meets your exam-preparation needs.
Choose it when Google Cloud learning, rather than AWS training, is the priority.
KodeKloud offers free access, a trial and a Teams plan at 360.00 USD per year per user, with courses, labs, DevOps and Cloud playgrounds, and AI playbooks. Consider it for a team seeking that DevOps and Cloud practice mix.
Tutorials Dojo is another freemium training option.
Digital Cloud Training is a freemium option with a 24.99 USD monthly plan and a 149.00 USD yearly plan, each offering an on-demand AWS training library. Consider it if you want an AWS-focused library with those subscription terms.
Linux Foundation Training is a paid training option with a free plan.

Verdict

AWS Skill Builder is a strong fit for individuals building AWS skills and teams that need AWS-focused assignments and reporting. Its free catalog lowers the cost of starting, while paid plans add meaningful practice and exam preparation; annual plans add Digital Classroom, and Team adds administration. Choose another service if you need live instruction, certification exams included, broader cloud-provider coverage, or team seats for people outside your organization.
