Overview

Axero is an intranet platform for workplace communication, shared knowledge, and employee access across connected systems. It best suits organizations that need configurable workspaces and substantial integration options; its main trade-off is that pricing and plan fit require careful scoping.

Search spans intranet content and connected repositories, while Axero Copilot provides AI chatbots. Teams can create public or private workspaces for departments, projects, and initiatives, with granular permissions and extranet access. Employee directory, news publishing, audience targeting, and page-building capabilities make it broader than a document repository, though teams seeking only lightweight chat may not need that breadth.

For category comparisons, see Intranet Software, Employee Intranet Software, Employee Directory Software, and HR Knowledge Base Software.

Key features

Search and AI: Elastic search across intranet content and connected repositories can help employees find information spread across systems. Copilot chatbots add an AI interface, but no further capabilities are established.
Workspaces: Public and private spaces, granular permissions, and extranet capabilities support collaboration across departments and selected external audiences. This flexibility is useful for varied access needs, though it adds more structure than a simple company news feed.
Integrations and APIs: Axero lists more than 30 integrations and over 500 REST APIs, with webhook support. Named connections include Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, identity directories, Salesforce, Box, Dropbox, SharePoint Online, and ServiceNow. That breadth is a strong fit for teams connecting workplace tools; it is less compelling if the organization needs only a standalone intranet.
Security and compliance: Axero describes AES-256 encryption at rest, including AES-256 FIPS 140-2 Level 3, SSL/TLS 1.3 for connections, and an independent database and software instance for each customer. It states SOC 2 Type II compliance, ISO 27001 and SSAE 16 compliance for cloud hosting, and HIPAA-compliant hosting with a BAA available. These controls may suit organizations with formal security requirements.
Deployment and identity: Customers can use Axero's private Azure cloud or deploy on their own infrastructure, with REST API access and direct database integrations. Identity options include Active Directory, Entra ID, Google, ADFS, OneLogin, Okta, Salesforce, custom SAML 2.0 providers, and native login. Self-hosting offers infrastructure control, but organizations must choose and manage a deployment approach.
Mobile and support: Native iOS and Android apps, responsive browser design, and optional white-label apps cover mobile access. Support resources include guides, videos, forums, administrator, user, and developer documentation, plus paid professional services. Managed environments receive daily backups retained for seven days and weekly backups retained for 30 days, with redundant storage in a separate zone.

Pricing

Axero has no free plan and offers a free trial. The starting price is $10/user/mo, but named plan prices vary by offer and some plans use custom pricing.

Essentials: $500.00 USD per month, flat price, with 50% off the first two months. It supports up to 100 people and includes cloud hosting, but has no spaces or integrations, uses email/password sign-in, and makes the mobile app an add-on. It is the lower-cost defined option for smaller teams willing to forgo those capabilities.
Growth: $2000.00 USD per month, flat price, with 50% off the first two months. It supports up to 500 people and 10 spaces, and adds SSO, directory sync, SharePoint and REST API integrations, and cloud hosting. The higher price buys meaningful connectivity and identity features; the mobile app remains an add-on.
Standard: Custom pricing. Workspaces and groups, communication tools, content management, notifications, task management, and gamification make this a broad baseline, but the plan omits the specifically named API and integration benefits of Premium.
Premium: Custom pricing. It adds a custom domain, REST API access, single sign-on, and third-party integrations, making it the more relevant tier for teams connecting Axero to their stack.
Enterprise: Custom pricing. White-labeled mobile apps, a developer sandbox, quarterly business reviews, multiple language versions of content, and a 99.5% uptime SLA with service credits target organizations needing more deployment polish and contractual assurance.
On-Premises: Custom pricing. It runs on the customer's infrastructure and emphasizes control, security, and data privacy. It is the option for teams that require self-hosting rather than cloud hosting.

The $10/user/mo starting price should not be treated as a direct substitute for the flat monthly Essentials and Growth offers: their limits differ substantially, and Essentials excludes spaces and integrations. Teams should match the offer to their user count, integration needs, and mobile requirements before comparing cost.

Platforms

Axero supports web, Android, iOS, API access, and self-hosted deployment. Native mobile apps are included in the platform's mobile offering, but Essentials and Growth treat the mobile app as an add-on; Enterprise includes a white-labeled app. That distinction matters for budgeting teams that assume app access is part of every offer.

Who it's for

Axero is a good fit for organizations consolidating internal communication and knowledge while connecting identity, collaboration, and business systems. Its API depth, workspace permissions, and self-hosting option suit teams with integration or infrastructure requirements. Smaller groups seeking a free entry point, or teams that need integrations within the Essentials limits, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 500 REST APIs and 30+ integrations give builders options for connecting workplace systems.
Pro: Cloud and customer-infrastructure deployment accommodate different control requirements.
Pro: Dedicated customer instances, encryption, stated compliance credentials, and managed backup retention address security and continuity concerns.
Con: There is no free plan, so evaluation depends on the trial and paid offers.
Con: Essentials supports up to 100 people but provides no spaces or integrations, limiting its usefulness for teams drawn to Axero's connected-workspace strengths.
Con: The mobile app is an add-on in the two priced monthly offers, adding a potential cost to a core access channel.
Con: Standard, Premium, Enterprise, and On-Premises use custom pricing, making budget comparison less immediate.

Alternatives

Connecteam is worth considering when a free plan and freemium pricing are more important than Axero's stated deployment and API choices.
MangoApps is another paid option, with a Communications & Intranet plan starting at 9.00 USD per month from 200 employees.
Workleap Pingboard offers a free plan and paid annual plans for teams comparing directory-oriented options.
Workvivo is a paid alternative with customized packages and no free trial.
Slack has a free plan with basic chat and collaboration, including limits such as 90 days of message history and up to ten apps; choose it when those chat-focused basics matter more than an intranet suite.
Business in a Box offers a free plan with core platform access for teams comparing a no-cost starting point.
SimpleOrgChart is a free, MIT-licensed open-source option for teams considering a self-hosted alternative.
GoProfiles offers a free plan with a directory, org chart, employee map, peer recognition, and achievements for teams whose priority is employee profiles and discovery.

Verdict

Choose Axero if your organization needs a configurable intranet with broad APIs, connected workplace tools, and a choice between private cloud and self-hosting. Its clearest reason to look elsewhere is cost and packaging: there is no free tier, the defined Essentials plan excludes spaces and integrations, and mobile access adds cost on the two priced flat-rate plans.
