Overview

Recombee is a real-time recommendation engine and personalized semantic search service for teams building digital experiences around user behavior and changing catalogs. It suits product and engineering teams that want to shape discovery rules rather than rely on a fixed recommendation setup. Its breadth of developer entry points is a strength; the free tier’s activity and catalog caps make checking expected volume an essential first step.

Key features

Recommendations adapt to user interactions and content updates, making the service relevant where catalogs or user interests change frequently. Personalized semantic search extends it beyond recommendation placements, so teams can address both ranking and item discovery in one product. Behavioral triggers, dynamic content, product recommendations, real-time personalization, and omnichannel support round out its personalization capabilities.

Scenario settings, filters, boosters, constraints, and ReQL let teams encode business rules and tune recommendation behavior. That control is useful when commercial or editorial priorities need to influence results, but it also means teams must decide how those rules should work. The Admin UI provides customizable reports and insights into user interactions with recommendations and the platform, giving operators a way to review activity.

Integration options span a REST API, SDK clients in multiple programming languages, catalog feeds, and no-code widgets. Official plugins are available for Keboola and Segment; community plugins cover WordPress, Drupal, Laravel, Kentico, Kentico Kontent, and n8n. This mix gives developers several routes into an existing stack, though the plugin set includes both official and community-maintained options.

Recombee says its processing servers are in the EU and that customer data is pseudonymized. It also describes physical and software safeguards, routine penetration tests, and monitored, logged database access. Its stated scale—more than 30,000 recommendations per second, catalogs with tens of millions of items, and over a billion recommendations per day—positions it for substantial workloads, while the plan thresholds remain the practical buying guide.

Pricing

Recombee uses freemium pricing, with an unlimited 30-day trial before customers can upgrade or continue on the free plan. The free option is 0.00 USD per free, billed Forever, and allows fewer than 100,000 interactions and recommendation requests per month, fewer than 20,000 active users per month, and fewer than 20,000 catalog items. It is a sensible starting point for evaluation or small deployments, but the strict caps can constrain a growing service.

Standard starts at 99.00 USD per month, billed Starting at /mo. It raises the thresholds to 100,000 monthly interactions, 100,000 monthly recommendation requests, 20,000 active users, and 20,000 catalog items. This is the entry paid tier for a modest production workload, but it offers little headroom beyond those limits.

Pro starts at 1699.00 USD per month, billed Starting at /mo, and includes 5,000,000 monthly interactions and recommendation requests, 1,000,000 active users, and 1,000,000 catalog items. It is a substantial step up in capacity for larger services, with a correspondingly sharp price increase over Standard. Premium starts at 4499.00 USD per month, billed Starting at /mo, with at least 20,000,000 monthly interactions and recommendation requests, at least 4,000,000 active users, and at least 4,000,000 catalog items. That tier is aimed at high-volume operations; teams with needs beyond a stated tier should assess the fit with Recombee.

Support is also part of the plan comparison: the pricing page distinguishes tiers covering customer support, mail, availability guarantees, an account manager, video calls, a Slack channel, integration support, and data science support. Teams should weigh the support they need alongside usage thresholds when choosing a plan.

Platforms

Recombee supports Android, iOS, web, and API access. The API, SDKs, feeds, and widgets provide options for connecting those surfaces to recommendation and search capabilities.

Who it's for

The product targets video, e-commerce, news and media, deal aggregators, music and podcasts, sports and live events, real estate, marketplaces, travel, and recruitment. It is a strong fit for teams in those fields that need recommendations and personalized search across a changing catalog, with enough technical capacity to apply custom controls. Organizations seeking a narrowly packaged, low-touch tool may find its configurable rules and usage-based plan thresholds less suitable.

Pros and cons

Pros: Recommendations and personalized semantic search share one service, broadening its use beyond recommendation slots.
Pros: ReQL and configurable filters, boosters, constraints, and scenarios let teams adapt results to business rules.
Pros: API, SDK, feed, widget, and plugin options support several integration approaches.
Pros: The free tier and unlimited 30-day trial offer room to evaluate before committing to a paid plan.
Cons: Free usage is capped at fewer than 100,000 monthly interactions and requests, fewer than 20,000 active users, and fewer than 20,000 catalog items.
Cons: Standard’s 100,000-per-month activity and request limits and 20,000-user and item limits leave limited room for rapid growth.
Cons: Pro begins at 1699.00 USD per month, a major jump from Standard for teams needing materially more capacity.
Cons: Some plugins are community offerings, so teams may prefer API or SDK integration where they need a more direct developer route.

Verdict

Recombee is best for teams with evolving catalogs that want real-time recommendations, personalized semantic search, and meaningful control over ranking behavior. Its API and integration choices make it adaptable, while the free tier and trial offer a low-commitment starting point. Choose another option if your projected activity or catalog size strains the lower tiers, or if you need a less configurable product; the jump from Standard to Pro makes scale planning central to the decision.
