Overview

Black Forest Labs, founded in 2024 and headquartered in Freiburg, Germany, targets marketing, product visualization, creative production, design, entertainment, and e-commerce. FLUX combines image and video generation with specialized editing endpoints, making it more relevant to teams building repeatable creative workflows than to someone looking for a single-purpose image toy.

Teams can work in the browser playground, call the API, or deploy open weights on their own infrastructure. API use includes full commercial rights without a separate license. Open-weight rights depend on the model: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B permits free commercial use under Apache 2.0, while FLUX.2 [dev] is non-commercial and has no hosted API endpoint.

Key features

Image generation and editing

FLUX.2 generates and edits images up to 4 MP, with multi-reference editing, hex color control, and text rendering. Those controls are useful when teams need to align outputs with brand palettes, combine visual references, or place legible text. The resolution ceiling may constrain work requiring larger native output.

Video and specialized tools

FLUX 3 generates video with synchronized audio from text or images, can extend an existing clip, and supports clips up to 20 seconds. That makes it a candidate for short-form creative work, not a substitute for workflows requiring longer sequences. FLUX Tools add outpainting, object erasing, virtual try-on, video upscaling, and deblurring endpoints, covering several common correction and finishing tasks without limiting the product to generation alone.

Deployment, integrations, and safeguards

Black Forest Labs names Mistral, Magnific, Adobe, Microsoft, Picsart, Gamma, and OpenArt among its integrations. Its site identifies ISO 27001:2022 and SOC 2 Type II certifications. However, the privacy policy says prompts, uploads, tasks, and outputs may be used to train and improve models; users can opt out by email. Teams handling sensitive creative assets should weigh that policy against the convenience of hosted access. Failed or moderated generations do not consume credits, which reduces the risk of paying for unusable runs.

Pricing

FLUX uses a freemium model, with free open-weight options and paid hosted image generation. The listed monthly API plans price FLUX.2 [klein] 4B at 0.01 USD per month, [klein] 9B at 0.02 USD per month, [pro] at 0.03 USD per month, [flex] at 0.05 USD per month, and [max] at 0.07 USD per month. Each has a 4 MP maximum output. Additional megapixels and reference images are billed separately: respectively $0.001/MP for [klein] 4B, $0.002/MP for [klein] 9B, $0.015/MP for [pro], $0.05/MP for [flex], and $0.03/MP for [max]. [Flex] charges $0.05 per first and additional MP.

For occasional use, pay-as-you-go avoids a monthly commitment: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is 0.01 USD per once, [klein] 9B 0.02 USD per once, [pro] 0.03 USD per once, [flex] 0.05 USD per once, and [max] 0.07 USD per once. Most charge a first-megapixel rate plus separate rates for additional megapixels and reference images; [flex] bills by megapixel with no per-image minimum. Output is capped at 4 MP, and resolution is rounded up to whole megapixels on the other pay-as-you-go plans.

Open weights — FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is 0.00 USD per free, with Apache 2.0 terms and free commercial use on self-hosted weights. Open weights — FLUX.2 [dev] is also 0.00 USD per free, but is non-commercial under the FLUX Non-Commercial license and self-hosted only. The cheaper route therefore trades hosted convenience or commercial permissions for infrastructure control; check the model license before shipping a commercial product.

Platforms

FLUX supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted deployment. That spread suits teams mixing hosted experimentation with infrastructure they control, though the open-weight route makes model-specific licensing especially important.

Who it's for

FLUX is a good fit for teams producing marketing assets, product visuals, and other creative content that benefits from image editing controls and short video generation. API access fits commercial integration, while self-hosting appeals to teams prepared to manage deployment and select a model with suitable rights. It is less suitable when a project needs longer video clips, output above 4 MP, or a hosted workflow without the stated training-use policy.

Pros and cons

Pros: Image, video, and specialized editing endpoints cover multiple stages of creative production.
Pros: API commercial rights and Apache 2.0 commercial self-hosting for [klein] 4B provide distinct routes to commercial use.
Pros: Failed or moderated generations do not consume credits.
Cons: The 4 MP image ceiling and 20-second video maximum rule out some higher-resolution or longer-form needs.
Cons: Prompts, uploads, tasks, and outputs may be used to improve models unless users opt out by email.
Cons: Open-weight commercial rights vary, and [dev] is explicitly non-commercial.

Alternatives

Leonardo.Ai is worth comparing for a freemium API option with a free plan that includes 150 fast tokens per day, a 150-token bank, and one personal collection. Deep Art Effects may fit teams seeking a freemium tool spanning mobile, desktop, web, and API, with a 3 Month Subscription at 25.00 USD per month billed for three months. Scenario offers a free tier with 50 daily credits for personal and evaluation use, plus a Starter plan at 15.00 USD per month.

ComfyUI, Ideogram, Krea Video, Mage, and PixAI are other options to compare. Browse AI Art Generators or AI image generators for more choices.

Verdict

Choose FLUX if your team wants image generation and editing, short synchronized-audio video, and a choice between API access and self-hosted weights. Its strongest case is that range, paired with commercial API rights and practical editing endpoints. Look elsewhere if you need output beyond its resolution or clip limits, or if the training-use policy is incompatible with your work.
