Overview

BBC Symphony Orchestra is a virtual orchestral sample library for composers building parts with strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion. It best suits music creators working inside a DAW who want a free starting point and room to move into larger editions. The main appeal is a scalable orchestral library whose editions can switch modes; its key constraints are the required host software and the paid editions’ one-time costs.

Key features

Recorded at Maida Vale Studios, the library runs in Spitfire Audio’s dedicated plugin, which supports VST3, AU and AAX. Discover is described as compatible with major music creation software, including GarageBand and Pro Tools. There is no standalone app, so this is not the right choice for someone who wants to use the library outside a plugin host.

The editions trade compactness for range. Discover has 34 instruments, 47 techniques and one mix signal in a 240MB package, making it a low-storage way to start, but its smaller selection limits the available orchestral palette. Core raises that to 44 instruments and 344 techniques, includes the full range of articulations, and keeps one mix signal. Professional offers 67 instruments, 468 techniques, 45 legatos and 20 signals, plus 36GB of extra content. That breadth favors composers who need more options, but requires room for a much larger library.

Discover, Core and Professional can switch modes, which Spitfire says supports sharing and collaboration among owners of different editions. That makes the range more practical for teams using mixed editions. The included 44 presets offer starting points, while product how-to videos, feature information and downloadable DAW templates provide setup support.

Pricing

Discover is free at 0.00 GBP per free and includes 34 instruments, 47 techniques, one mix signal and a 240MB package. It is a sensible entry for beginners or composers with modest orchestral needs, but not a substitute for the broader selections in the paid editions.

Core costs 399.00 GBP per once and includes 44 instruments, 344 techniques, the full range of articulations and one mix signal. It fits composers who need substantially more techniques than Discover without stepping up to Professional’s larger library and signal selection.

Professional costs 899.00 GBP per once and includes 67 instruments, 468 techniques, 20 signals and 36GB of extra content. It is the edition for users who value the widest stated range, including 45 legatos; the added scope comes with a significant storage commitment. The pricing summary gives a paid starting price of 449 one-time, while the Core plan is priced at 399.00 GBP per once.

Platforms

The library supports macOS and Windows. Downloading it requires the Spitfire Audio app, with installation guides for both systems. Spitfire recommends an external drive, though users can choose another installation location. The plugin’s VST3, AU and AAX support makes host compatibility a practical consideration before choosing it.

Who it's for

BBC Symphony Orchestra suits beginners looking for a free orchestral entry and professional composers seeking a wider instrument and technique selection. Core is a middle ground for users who have outgrown Discover but do not need Professional’s extra signals and 36GB of content. It is less suitable for someone without a compatible host or limited storage.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free Discover edition offers a compact 240MB entry point, with 34 instruments and 47 techniques.
Pros: Mode switching across editions supports collaboration between people with different versions.
Pros: Professional provides the broadest stated range, including 20 signals and 45 legatos.
Cons: It is not standalone; users need a compatible host and the Spitfire Audio app to download the library.
Cons: Discover’s single mix signal and smaller selection may not cover arrangements needing more range.
Cons: Professional adds 36GB of content, making storage a meaningful consideration.

Alternatives

For a different kind of free instrument, Dexed is free software under a GPL v3 license and supports Linux as well as macOS and Windows. Surge XT is another free, open-source virtual instrument plugin, with a stable release for Windows, macOS and Linux. Choose either when a free instrument and broader operating-system support matter more than BBC Symphony Orchestra’s orchestral sample-library focus.

IK Multimedia ReSing offers a free tier with two voices, two instruments and one RVC import, with no model generation; its paid plan is 129.99 USD per once for 10 voices. It is an alternative for users whose needs fit that voice-oriented offering rather than an orchestral library.

Vital has a free Basic plan with 75 presets, 25 wavetables and full synth features, making it a better fit for someone seeking a synthesizer instead of orchestral samples. Pianoteq is a paid instrument option with a free trial and paid editions including Stage at 139.00 USD per once; choose it when its instrument-pack approach better fits the job. Repro is a paid synth with a free trial, priced at 149.00 EUR per once, and requires host software or a DAW.

EZmix 3 is a paid option with a free trial; its 69.00 EUR upgrade requires an earlier EZmix version. MASCHINE is another paid alternative for macOS and Windows, while Virtual Instruments provides a broader category directory.

Verdict

Choose BBC Symphony Orchestra if you want an orchestral sample library that starts free and offers a clear path to editions with more instruments, techniques and signals. Its mode switching is useful for collaboration across editions, and Professional is the strongest fit for composers who need its expanded range. Look elsewhere if you need a standalone instrument, cannot accommodate the download and storage demands, or want a different kind of virtual instrument.
