Overview

BDRCloud is a backup and disaster-recovery platform for organizations protecting infrastructure, business applications, and cloud services. It is best suited to teams and MSPs that need one management layer across varied workloads and storage targets. Its breadth is useful, but workload-based licensing means buyers should match the quote to exactly what they need to protect.

BDRShield offers one full-featured edition, Enterprise Edition. The backup server software can be installed without charge, and free licenses are available, but workloads require licenses; this is not an unlimited free backup service. Central management can be cloud-hosted or self-hosted, giving teams a choice about where to run the console.

Key features

Broad workload coverage

Coverage spans Windows, Linux, and Mac endpoints and servers; Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace; VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, Proxmox VE, and oVirt; and AWS and Azure virtual machines. NAS and file shares, databases, and applications round out the workload mix. Microsoft 365 protection includes Exchange Online, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. This range can simplify a mixed estate, though buyers should confirm the applicable license unit for every workload before comparing costs.

Storage and recovery

Backups can be stored in BDRShield Cloud, on-premises or remote DAS, NAS, or SAN, and public cloud storage from Amazon, Azure, Google, Wasabi, Backblaze, MinIO, and other S3-compatible providers. That flexibility suits organizations that need to retain control of destination choices. Recovery features include automated backup verification, instant recovery for VMs and physical servers, granular and point-in-time restores, bare-metal recovery, and cross-platform migration. The combination addresses both routine file-level recovery and larger restoration needs.

Security and MSP operations

Security controls include immutable backups with retention lock, air-gapped and offsite copies, encryption in transit and at rest, anomaly detection, and malware scanning before backup and restore. MFA, role-based access, email token validation for endpoint restores, custom restore passwords, and audit logs with real-time monitoring add access controls. These are relevant safeguards for teams prioritizing ransomware resilience, but they do not replace an organization’s own compliance assessment. BDRShield says its controls support organizations seeking SOC 2, HIPAA, and GDPR requirements.

For MSPs, multi-tenant management, white-label branding, PSA/RMM integration, a web services API, and centralized control can support managed backup operations. BDRShield also advertises 24/7 expert technical support.

Pricing

BDRCloud uses a freemium model, with a free plan and a fully featured 30-day free trial. The FAQ says the server software installation carries no charge and free licenses are available, but each protected workload needs a license. That distinction matters: the free entry point does not establish that every workload can be backed up at no cost.

The pricing page offers per-endpoint, per-server, per-500-GB NAS/file-share, per-user, per-VM, and per-application licensing, with optional per-GB cloud-storage licensing. Confirm which units apply to the intended deployment and whether storage charges are relevant before budgeting.

Enterprise Edition subscription

The subscription has custom pricing, billed monthly, annually, or on a multi-year term. Licensing can be per workload, CPU socket, user, endpoint, or application. This is the flexible route for teams preferring subscription billing, but the quote will depend on the selected license basis.

Enterprise Edition perpetual license

The perpetual license is a one-time payment and includes one year of AMC. AMC is required after the first year for continued support. It can suit buyers who prefer a perpetual license, but the ongoing support term is a separate cost consideration. No public price is provided for either Enterprise Edition option.

Platforms

BDRCloud supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. Its workload and destination coverage is broader than a single-platform backup utility, while the self-hosted console option matters to organizations that want centralized management deployed in their own environment.

Who it's for

BDRCloud is a strong fit for IT teams managing a heterogeneous estate across endpoints, SaaS, virtualization, cloud VMs, file shares, and applications, especially when multiple storage destinations or recovery methods matter. MSPs may value its multi-tenant controls, branding, integrations, and API. It is less compelling for a buyer seeking a simple, fixed-cost file backup plan: workload-specific licensing and custom quotes make direct budget comparisons harder.

Pros and cons

Pros: Coverage across endpoint, SaaS, virtual, cloud, file, database, and application workloads can consolidate protection for mixed environments.
Pros: On-premises, remote, vendor-cloud, and public-cloud targets provide meaningful storage choice.
Pros: Immutable and air-gapped copy options, malware scanning, and multiple restore paths address both protection and recovery needs.
Pros: MSP-focused multi-tenancy, white-label branding, PSA/RMM integration, and API support are useful for service providers managing customers.
Cons: Workloads require licenses even though server software installation is free, so the free entry point may not cover a real deployment.
Cons: Custom pricing and several possible license units mean buyers need a workload inventory to estimate spend.
Cons: Perpetual-license buyers must account for AMC after the first included year to continue support.

Alternatives

For a free, open-source tool rather than a workload-licensed backup platform, rclone is the alternative to consider; its listed plan is 0.00 USD per free. For a focused Microsoft 365 backup comparison, see Microsoft 365 Backup Software; for a broader market scan, see Cloud Backup Services.

IDrive is worth comparing when its consumer-oriented storage plans better fit the requirement, including IDrive Mini at 0.25 USD per month for 100 GB and one user. Jottacloud offers a 5 GB free plan for one user and an Unlimited plan at 12.99 USD per month, making it a simpler storage-plan comparison. Duplicati may suit a small machine-monitoring need: its free tier monitors up to two machines and shows the last 200 backups, while Pro is 2.00 USD per month.

FileCloud is another option to weigh for file-oriented needs; its Essentials plan is 7.00 USD per month, billed annually, with a 20-user minimum and unlimited file upload size. MSP360 Backup has a free personal workstation plan with file and image-based backup and forum-based support, a narrower starting point than BDRCloud’s broader workload scope. For a Mac-only choice, Veeam Agent for Mac has a free edition limited to one backup job and no direct object-storage backup. Synology Active Backup for SaaS is a free add-on for Synology NAS with no software license required, a fit to consider when that platform-specific model matches the environment.

Verdict

Choose BDRCloud if your team or MSP needs broad workload coverage, flexible backup targets, and recovery and security controls under centralized management. Its strongest case is consolidating protection across a varied environment; look elsewhere if predictable, plainly priced plans or a narrow single-purpose backup tool matter more than breadth.
