Overview

Epic Online Services (EOS) is a modular suite of online services for game developers, spanning social features, multiplayer, player data, and trust and safety. It suits teams building cross-platform games in Unreal Engine, Unity, or another engine. Its free, no-royalty, no-hosting-fee offer is unusually broad, though console SDK access requires a request and usage restrictions apply.

Key features

EOS combines accounts and social tools—including crossplay, friends, presence, overlay, and the Epic Games account ecosystem—with multiplayer building blocks such as peer-to-peer, sessions, lobbies, and voice chat. That breadth can reduce the number of separate services a team needs to assemble; it also makes EOS most compelling when a project can use several parts of the suite rather than just one.

Leaderboards, stats, achievements, and player and title data storage cover common game-data needs. Trust and safety adds Easy Anti-Cheat, sanctions, player reports, and Kids Web Services. These features make EOS relevant beyond matchmaking or backend basics, but teams should evaluate the particular service restrictions against their expected usage.

Developers can use Unreal Engine, Unity, or their engine of choice. The SDK is available for PC in C or C#, Android, and iOS; console SDKs require setting up a product in the Developer Portal with an Epic Games account and requesting access. That access step matters for console projects planning their integration schedule.

Epic says it processes game-service data to operate the services and will not share partner data with third parties or its internal game development and publishing teams without explicit authorization. AWS, listed in the USA, provides cloud services; Cloudflare, also listed in the USA, provides content delivery and API security. Epic directs developers with unanswered FAQ questions to its EOS support contact. Service restrictions are intended to prevent excessive load and denial-of-service attacks, and violations may lead to throttling or suspension.

Pricing

Plan	Price	Terms
Epic Online Services	0.00 USD	Free to use; no royalty fees; no hosting fees; service usage restrictions may apply

The free plan is the sole plan described and is suited to developers who want EOS services without royalty or hosting fees. There are no paid tiers to compare; the practical trade-off is that usage restrictions still apply, so teams with heavy or unusual service demands should account for possible throttling or suspension.

Platforms

EOS supports cross-platform deployment, with SDKs for PC, Android, and iOS, plus console SDKs available after requesting access through the Developer Portal. Its platform range and engine flexibility fit teams targeting multiple environments, while console access is not immediate by default.

Who it's for

EOS is a strong fit for game developers—from small teams to large publishers—who need several online game services and want to use them across platforms without royalty or hosting fees. It is less suited to teams that need guaranteed unrestricted usage or console SDK access without a request process.

Pros and cons

Pros: A single modular suite spans crossplay and social features, multiplayer, game data, and safety tools, which can cover multiple needs in one integration.
Pros: Free to use with no royalty or hosting fees, making its stated pricing straightforward for teams of different sizes.
Pros: Engine choice is open, with Unreal Engine, Unity, or another engine supported.
Cons: Service usage restrictions may apply, and violations can result in throttling or suspension.
Cons: Console SDKs require a Developer Portal setup and an access request, adding a step for console-focused projects.

Alternatives

For a narrower starting point, browse Game Backend Services, Game Matchmaking Software, Game Anti-Cheat Software, or Game Leaderboard Software.

Easy Anti-Cheat is a focused alternative for studios seeking its free basic protection with no usage limits. Anybrain and Byteria Game Anti-Cheat are paid alternatives with overlapping platform coverage. OZeroSecurity Anti-Cheat SDK is a paid option with a perpetual Standard license at 159.00 USD per once, including offline operation and unlimited projects. AGINUZ Anti-Cheat Infrastructure offers a free Protected plan aimed at single-player and offline games, alongside a paid Indie plan. Steam Input is a free alternative. FairFight and BattlEye are paid alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Epic Online Services if your game needs a broad mix of cross-platform social, multiplayer, data, and safety functions without royalty or hosting fees. Its main advantage is that breadth within a free, engine-flexible suite; look elsewhere if your usage cannot accommodate service restrictions or your console plans depend on access without a request process.
