Overview

BBB’s directory connects 140 million users a year with businesses. Consumers can use business profiles, reviews, complaint resolution, and alerts about emerging risks as they compare local options. Businesses can create or claim a profile, invite customers to leave reviews, and respond to reviews and complaints. That makes BBB more than a static listing, though its local focus is less relevant to teams seeking a broad software or product directory.

BBB also provides free conciliation, low-cost mediation, and binding arbitration to help customers and businesses resolve disputes. These options offer a structured path when a disagreement needs attention. Independent local BBBs administer profiles, complaints, reviews, and accreditation, so the process and support are handled locally.

Key features

Profiles, reviews, and quote requests

Businesses can manage their profile and respond to customer feedback. Accreditation adds an enhanced profile and the BBB Seal, along with an Accredited-only search listing. Accredited businesses may also receive consumer requests through Get a Quote, delivered by email or text according to preference. If a business does not respond within 24 hours, a request may go to nearby Accredited Businesses in the same industry when the consumer opted to receive multiple quotes. This can create a reason to respond promptly, but the program is limited to eligible accredited businesses.

Dispute resolution and standards

BBB offers free conciliation, low-cost mediation, and binding arbitration. Accreditation dues do not buy a rating or remove a complaint, an important distinction for businesses concerned about how paid status relates to public feedback. Accreditation standards also require businesses to protect collected data against unauthorized disclosure and fraud, and to collect personal information only as needed.

Business education

BBB Learning, powered by MindEdge, offers hundreds of on-demand courses on business topics. It adds an education resource alongside directory and customer-service functions, though BBB’s core value remains local visibility and consumer engagement.

Pricing

BBB is freemium, with a free listing and paid annual accreditation dues. There is no free trial; the free listing is the lower-commitment way to establish a presence.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
Free business listing	Free	BBB.org exposure; no BBB Seal and no Accredited-only search listing. Eligibility: less than 6 months.	Newer businesses that want a basic listing without accreditation.
BBB Accreditation information	Free	Learn about accreditation benefits. Eligibility: 6+ months.	Established businesses considering whether accreditation fits.
BBB Accreditation	Custom pricing; annual dues apply	BBB.org exposure, BBB Seal, Accredited-only search listing, and dispute resolution access that may vary by location. Eligibility: 6+ months and meeting BBB standards. Fees vary by factors including business size.	Eligible businesses that value the seal, added profile visibility, and accreditation benefits.

The free listing gives up the seal and restricted search placement, while the information plan explains benefits without conferring accreditation. Accreditation is not a uniform-price upgrade: dues depend in part on business size, and local programs and benefits can vary. Not all businesses qualify, and applicants must have operated for at least six months and continually meet BBB standards.

Platforms

BBB is available on the web. Its locally administered structure makes it a fit for businesses and consumers focused on local markets rather than teams seeking a mobile-first or API-oriented directory.

Who it's for

BBB is most useful to consumers comparing local providers and to businesses that want a profile where customers can review them and raise concerns. It is also relevant when both sides want access to structured dispute-resolution options. Businesses should weigh the value of the seal and quote requests against local dues and eligibility requirements. It is a weaker fit for companies that need predictable nationwide administration or a directory built around developer integrations.

Pros and cons

Pros: A directory with 140 million users a year gives local businesses a substantial discovery channel.
Pros: Customers can leave reviews and businesses can respond to reviews and complaints, supporting public follow-up.
Pros: Conciliation, mediation, and arbitration provide distinct routes for resolving disputes.
Pros: Accreditation adds a seal, enhanced profile, Accredited-only search listing, and potential quote requests.
Cons: Accreditation requires at least six months of operation, ongoing standards compliance, and annual dues that vary.
Cons: Local BBBs administer the service, so support, programs, and some benefits vary by area.
Cons: The free listing lacks the seal and Accredited-only search exposure, limiting what newer or non-accredited businesses receive.

Verdict

Choose BBB if local discovery, public customer feedback, and access to dispute resolution matter more than uniform pricing or centralized administration. Its free listing lowers the barrier to entry, while accreditation can add meaningful visibility and quote opportunities for qualifying businesses. Look elsewhere if you need predictable accreditation costs, consistent local terms, or a directory designed around integrations rather than local trust and service.
