Overview

The platform spans AI SRE, incident management, on-call, uptime monitoring, status pages, telemetry, error tracking, and real user monitoring. That combination can reduce handoffs between alerting and investigation; teams should still assess each product area separately, since telemetry has its own quotas and paid plans.

Better Stack says it is SOC 2 Type 2 and GDPR compliant. Relevant data is encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with HTTPS/TLS, with automated backups and redundant storage where appropriate. EU data is stored by default in GDPR-compliant DIN ISO/IEC 27001-certified data centers; enterprise accounts can choose custom data locations. Better Stack is not HIPAA compliant, which rules it out for teams that require that status.

Key features

Incident response and AI investigation

On-call scheduling, escalation policies, post-incident reviews, stakeholder updates, and ChatOps incident actions give teams a response workflow that goes beyond alert delivery. The Slack-native AI SRE agent investigates incidents across logs, metrics, traces, errors, and web events. This breadth suits teams coordinating response in Slack, though the stated workflow does not remove the need to verify findings in the underlying telemetry.

Telemetry and error tracking

Logs and traces can be transformed with VRL and queried through drag-and-drop, PromQL, or SQL, giving teams several ways to work with telemetry. Error tracking is Sentry SDK-compatible and includes 100,000 exceptions with 90-day retention. That compatibility can ease adoption for existing Sentry-instrumented services, while the included exception allowance and log-and-trace quotas make usage a plan-selection concern.

Uptime monitoring and status pages

Checks cover HTTP(S) keywords, TCP/UDP ports, SSL, and DNS, with intervals as frequent as every 30 seconds. The free plan includes 10 monitors and heartbeats, one status page, and 1,000 subscribers. The check types and cadence suit teams monitoring several layers of a service, but the free monitor count is modest for larger estates.

Integrations and mobile

Listed integrations include Slack, Microsoft Teams, Datadog, New Relic, Grafana, Prometheus, PagerDuty, Jira, Zapier, and Google Calendar. iOS and Android apps support mobile notifications, useful for responders who need alerts away from a workstation. Better Stack supports Android, iOS, API, and web.

Pricing

The pricing model is freemium, with a free plan and paid plans spanning incident response and telemetry. The plans use different billing terms, so compare the telemetry quotas and retention as well as the headline price.

Free for personal projects — 0.00 USD per free: 10 monitors and heartbeats, one status page, 100,000 exceptions per month, 5,000 session replays, 3 GB of logs and traces retained for 3 days, and 30 GB of metrics. It is a practical starting point for personal projects, but three-day log and trace retention limits its value for investigations that need older context.
Responder — 29.00 USD per month: billed per license, annually. Includes uptime monitoring, incident management, on-call, status pages, and unlimited phone call and SMS alerts. It fits teams buying response and paging functions; the per-license annual billing matters when estimating team-wide cost.
Nano — logs and traces — 30.00 USD per month: billed monthly, with 40 GB each of traces, logs, and metrics and 30-day logs retention. It suits smaller telemetry needs, but provides less capacity than the higher tiers.
Micro — logs and traces — 120.00 USD per month: billed monthly, with 160 GB each of traces, logs, and metrics and 30-day logs retention. It raises all three data allowances for teams with greater ingestion needs.
Mega — logs and traces — 250.00 USD per month: billed monthly, with 340 GB each of traces, logs, and metrics and 30-day logs retention. It is the larger-volume option before Tera.
Tera — logs and traces — 500.00 USD per month: billed monthly, with 700 GB each of traces, logs, and metrics and 30-day logs retention. Teams with higher telemetry volumes get substantially more included capacity, while still working within the stated 30-day logs retention.

The free plan is the lowest-risk way to evaluate the monitoring and telemetry combination, but its 3 GB of logs and traces and 3-day retention are tight for sustained operational use. Responder's annual, per-license term is distinct from the monthly telemetry tiers; teams needing both should account for them as separate plan choices.

Platforms

Better Stack supports Android, iOS, API, and web. Its mobile apps are positioned for receiving notifications, while the API platform and web access address teams integrating or managing services through their existing stack.

Who it's for

Better Stack is strongest for engineering teams that want uptime checks, incident coordination, paging, and telemetry in one platform, particularly when responders already use Slack or the listed integrations. It is less suitable for organizations that need HIPAA compliance, or teams whose investigation practices require more than three days of free-plan logs and traces. Enterprise accounts can use custom data locations, which may matter to organizations with specific residency needs.

Pros and cons

Pros: Incident response includes on-call, escalations, post-incident reviews, stakeholder updates, and ChatOps actions, supporting more of the response lifecycle than alerting alone.
Pros: Telemetry supports VRL transformations and drag-and-drop, PromQL, or SQL queries, accommodating different operator workflows.
Pros: The free tier combines monitoring, status pages, error tracking, session replays, logs, traces, and metrics, giving personal projects several product areas to evaluate.
Cons: Free logs and traces are limited to 3 GB and retained for 3 days, a meaningful constraint when investigating incidents after the fact.
Cons: Better Stack is not HIPAA compliant, excluding teams with that requirement.
Cons: Responder is billed annually per license, so its $29.00 USD per month entry price is not a flat team-wide fee.

Alternatives

For a narrower monitoring need, these alternatives offer different deployment and plan tradeoffs:

Site24x7 Website Monitoring is worth considering when a free option with up to 50 resources or a $9.00 USD per month Web Uptime plan better matches the monitoring budget.
Uptime Kuma is the better fit for teams seeking free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted software rather than a hosted platform.
WebSitePulse may suit teams looking for a $9.00 USD per month HTTP performance plan with a 10-minute interval and one monitoring location.
F5 BIG-IP APM is an alternative for teams evaluating a paid platform available on BIG-IP Virtual Editions, hardware, or hybrid environments.
Kentik Network Monitoring System is an alternative for teams evaluating network monitoring with a 30-day trial and a Pro plan starting at $2,000.00 USD per year.
DNS Spy may fit teams focused on domain monitoring, with its Personal plan covering up to 10 domains for $9.00 USD per month.
HetrixTools is an alternative freemium monitoring option.
UptimeRobot is an alternative freemium monitoring option.

Verdict

Choose Better Stack if your team wants incident response and on-call alongside uptime monitoring and queryable telemetry, with integrations that fit its existing stack. Its main advantage is that breadth; look elsewhere if HIPAA compliance is mandatory or the free tier's short log retention and limited volume do not meet your investigation needs.
