Overview

Big Cartel is a hosted storefront for independent sellers offering physical goods, digital products, or memberships. It suits creators and small brands that want online and in-person sales without coding or plugins; its central trade-off is a low-cost entry point paired with strict product caps on the cheaper plans.

Setup centers on choosing a template, adding products, connecting Stripe or PayPal, and publishing at a web address. Big Cartel states that it charges no transaction fees, while payment processing is handled through those providers. Sellers can also import products from Etsy, Squarespace, and Shopify on every plan.

Key features

Multiple product types: Physical, digital, and membership products make the platform relevant to artists and creators with more than one kind of offer.
Payment choice: Through Stripe and PayPal, checkout can support cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Link, Cash App, Amazon Pay, Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm, PayPal, Venmo, and PayPal Pay Later. The breadth is useful for reaching buyers with different preferences, though payments still run through the connected providers.
In-person sales: The free mobile app supports tap-to-pay and cash sales, syncing orders and inventory with the online shop. That makes it a practical fit for sellers who also work markets or events.
Integrations: More than 60 apps are listed, including Printify, Printful, ShipStation, Zapier, Google Analytics, shopping channels, Omnisend, and Fera. This gives sellers ways to connect fulfillment, marketing, and analytics without building those connections themselves.
API and webhooks: The version 1 API supports OAuth 2.0 and webhooks, providing an integration path for teams connecting a store to other systems. Big Cartel also has an app marketplace.
Checkout security and support: Big Cartel says its addresses and connected custom domains are SSL encrypted, and checkout is always covered by SSL. Account holders can contact support through in-app messaging around the clock; people without an account can use email.

Pricing

Big Cartel uses a freemium model, with a 7-day trial and paid plans billed monthly. Its lack of transaction fees is a clear plus for sellers comparing platform charges, but the product limits are the main decision point.

Gold — 0.00 USD per free: The free plan allows up to five products and includes real-time stats, sales-tax autopilot, and one customizable store template. It is best for a small catalog or a seller trying the platform; five products is a hard ceiling for a growing range.
Platinum — 15.00 USD per month: This monthly plan raises the cap to 50 products and allows five images per product. It fits sellers who have outgrown Gold but do not need a large catalog; the lower image allowance also limits how extensively each listing can be presented.
Diamond — 30.00 USD per month: The top listed tier supports 500 products and 25 images per product. It adds password-protected products, scheduled drops, automatic discounts, advanced Google Analytics reporting, audience-targeted ads, abandoned-cart emails, and prioritized support. This is the stronger fit for a larger catalog or planned launches, but costs twice Platinum monthly.

All listed plans support product imports from Etsy, Squarespace, and Shopify. The plan progression is straightforward, but sellers should match the product cap and image allowance to their catalog before choosing.

Platforms

Big Cartel is available on web, Android, and iOS, and provides an API. Its hosted model avoids requiring sellers to run their own commerce infrastructure, while the API and webhooks leave room to connect other systems.

Who it's for

Big Cartel is aimed at creators, musicians, resellers, fundraisers, and makers who need a compact storefront, no platform transaction fee, and a way to reconcile in-person sales with online inventory. It is less suited to sellers whose catalog quickly exceeds 500 products or who need broader control over a self-hosted commerce stack.

Pros and cons

Pro: No platform transaction fees, plus a free plan, keep the platform cost structure simple for small sellers.
Pro: Online and mobile in-person sales sync orders and inventory, reducing the split between shop and event sales.
Pro: Imports, more than 60 apps, and an OAuth 2.0 API with webhooks support connections to existing selling and operations tools.
Con: Gold stops at five products, and Platinum at 50; sellers with expanding inventories must pay more or look elsewhere.
Con: Platinum allows five images per product, compared with 25 on Diamond, so richer product presentation is tied to the higher tier.

Alternatives

For a different commerce stack, these options are worth comparing:

Medusa is a better direction for teams seeking a self-hosted, API-oriented platform; its Develop plan is 29.00 USD per month and includes stated infrastructure quotas.
Sylius offers an open-source, MIT-licensed edition with community support and on-premise distribution, making it a consideration for teams that want that deployment model.
BigCommerce is a paid alternative with a free trial and a Core plan at 29.00 USD per month billed annually; consider it when its plan structure and platform fit better than Big Cartel's catalog tiers.
Fourthwall has a free plan for catalog products, memberships, a customizable shop, and social selling integrations; it is worth comparing for creator-focused selling.
Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 per transaction for direct sales and 30% for marketplace sales, so compare its fee model against Big Cartel's stated 0% platform transaction fee.
Aimeos is an open-source option with free commercial use and no license or transaction fees, for teams considering a self-hosted platform.
Optimizely Configured Commerce uses individually packaged pricing, so it is an alternative to assess when that pricing approach suits the buying process.
Crystallize is another API-oriented alternative to compare for teams evaluating commerce platforms.

Verdict

Choose Big Cartel if you are an independent seller who wants a hosted shop, integrated in-person selling, imports, and a usable API without platform transaction fees. Its strongest case is a compact creator catalog that can fit within Gold or Platinum; look elsewhere if product capacity, deployment control, or a broader commerce setup matters more than that focused approach.
