Overview

Workday Adaptive Planning is a companywide planning platform for financial and operational models, budgets, forecasts, and analytics. It suits organizations coordinating plans across teams and data systems, particularly when scenario depth and broad integrations matter. Its breadth is appealing, but custom pricing and a Salesforce data-import restriction warrant consideration.

Workday says its AI can reduce routine work, make recommendations, and predict future outcomes; dashboards, self-service reports, and process guidance support collaboration. Workday reports average user results of 70% shorter planning cycles and 50% increased productivity, though those results are not a guarantee for every organization.

Key features

Planning and analysis: Budgeting, forecasting, forecast-versus-actual analysis, workforce planning, financial consolidation, and financial and operational modeling cover more than finance alone. This breadth can help teams coordinate companywide plans; organizations seeking only basic budgeting may not need the full scope.
Scenarios and versions: Unlimited what-if scenarios and versions let teams compare alternatives without stated caps, useful for organizations that revisit assumptions frequently.
Data connections: The integration framework connects to any ERP or GL and other data sources, including Workday, NetSuite, Salesforce, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics GP, spreadsheets, databases, and cloud or on-premises systems. Excel connections can pass financial data into reports and presentations with one click. Salesforce imports cannot draw from reports or data created through app integrations, and exclude objects requiring a subquery; teams relying on those sources should check fit before committing.
Controls and access: An unlimited audit trail and single sign-on support oversight and access management. Production and non-production instances are included; secondary instances depend on the contract.
APIs and support: Integration APIs support data import and export, while other APIs cover model management and security administration. The offering includes 24/7 support, training resources, and Workday Community access; named Support Contacts can submit cases for defects, instance management, customer care, and training.
AI and analytics: Workday describes AI for routine-task reduction, recommendations, and prediction, alongside analytics for testing models and scenarios. These capabilities extend planning workflows, but the stated benefits are not a substitute for assessing fit with a team's own processes.

Pricing

Workday Adaptive Planning uses custom pricing, with quotes required for the core platform. The plan includes connections to any ERP or GL, unlimited versions, and unlimited what-if scenarios; no data limits are stated. That capacity suits teams with extensive modeling needs, but buyers must obtain a quote to judge cost against scope.

The Close & Consolidation option adds close and consolidation to planning, with any ERP or GL connectivity and unlimited what-if scenarios. Its pricing varies and requires a quote, making it relevant to organizations that need those capabilities rather than teams planning without a close workflow.

A 30-day free trial provides core planning capabilities, guided walkthroughs, and a step-by-step guide. It gives prospective users a short evaluation window, but there is no free plan after the trial. Secondary instances are contract-dependent, an important term for teams planning separate environments.

The platform is available through AWS Marketplace for customers drawing down annual AWS commitments, which may suit organizations using that purchasing route.

Platforms

Workday lists Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows support, as well as APIs. Its technology requirements identify supported browsers on Windows and Mac and tablet support for selected pages, including iPad Pro and Samsung Galaxy S2. Teams with mobile-heavy workflows should note that tablet support applies to selected pages rather than assuming full feature parity.

Who it's for

Workday describes Adaptive Planning for organizations of all sizes and decision-makers across the enterprise. It is best suited to teams that need companywide financial and operational planning, integrations across ERP, GL, spreadsheet, and other sources, and frequent scenario comparison. Smaller teams with simple budgets may find its breadth and quote-based buying process harder to justify.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad planning scope: Budgeting, forecasting, workforce planning, consolidation, and operational modeling support planning across functions.
High modeling capacity: Unlimited versions, unlimited what-if scenarios, and no stated data limits suit teams with many assumptions and iterations.
Wide connectivity: ERP, GL, Excel, and other system connections, plus APIs, support fit with varied stacks.
Included controls and support: Unlimited audit trail, single sign-on, 24/7 support, training resources, and community access strengthen governance and assistance.

Cons

Custom pricing: A quote is required, so teams cannot assess cost from a published rate.
Salesforce import exclusions: Reports, app-integration-created data, and objects requiring a subquery cannot be imported from Salesforce, which may disrupt particular data workflows.
Contract-dependent secondary instances: Teams needing additional environments must resolve that scope in contract terms.
No ongoing free tier: The 30-day trial is the only free access described, limiting continued evaluation without a purchase.

Verdict

Choose Workday Adaptive Planning if your organization needs integrated, companywide planning with deep scenario capacity, broad data connections, and governance features. Its main advantage is bringing financial and operational planning into one scalable modeling environment; its main drawback is custom pricing, compounded for some teams by Salesforce import exclusions. Smaller teams with limited planning needs or buyers requiring upfront price certainty should look elsewhere.
