Overview

The finder brings together educational clips from the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia and resource sheets with background information, student research and classroom activities. Its focus is teaching rather than general-purpose video browsing: the accompanying material can help educators turn a clip into a lesson, while search choices connect discovery to a curriculum context.

Key features

Search and teaching context

Teachers can search by curriculum, topic or keyword, with curriculum choices for Australian states and territories as well as a National option. This makes it a practical fit for educators planning around those curricula; it is not a broad substitute for a video service organized around unrelated needs. NFSA says experienced educators contributed resources intended to be relevant, engaging and challenging. Teachers should still decide whether each clip is appropriate for their class.

Viewing and offline access

Resources can be viewed or downloaded without logging in. The Help page describes MP4 downloads in Premium and Broadband quality, playable on a computer when internet access is unavailable or unreliable. That is a useful fallback for classrooms with connectivity constraints. Browser video access requires Flash Player version 6 or higher, however, so the downloadable files are the more practical route where that legacy plug-in is unavailable.

Use and privacy

NFSA permits downloading and use for personal or non-commercial educational purposes, and prohibits commercial exploitation. The website logs visits for statistical purposes, including pages accessed, downloads, browser and device type, and site interactions.

Pricing

The Digital Resource Finder plan is free. It includes free-for-education video clips and resources, with no free trial because access is free. There is no login requirement to view or download resources. The important limit is use: the permitted scope is personal or non-commercial education, not commercial exploitation. This makes it a straightforward choice for teachers using materials in education, but not for organizations seeking commercial rights.

Platforms

The service is available on the web. Its video access has a notable compatibility caveat: browser playback requires Flash Player version 6 or higher. MP4 downloads provide a computer-playable offline alternative, but the service is not described as a native mobile app.

Who it's for

NFSA Digital Resource Finder suits K–12 teachers who want Australian curriculum-oriented collection clips and supporting classroom material at no cost, especially where downloading in advance helps address unreliable internet. It is a weaker fit for educators outside the curriculum contexts offered, users who need commercial usage rights, or teams that require browser playback without a legacy plug-in.

Pros and cons

Pros: Curriculum, topic and keyword search helps teachers locate clips in a teaching context, including options for Australian states and territories and a national curriculum.
Pros: Resource sheets add background, student research and classroom activities, giving educators more than standalone video clips.
Pros: No-login access and MP4 downloads support advance preparation and offline classroom playback.
Cons: Browser video access requires Flash Player version 6 or higher, a substantial constraint for current browser-based workflows.
Cons: Use is limited to personal or non-commercial education, ruling it out for commercial exploitation.
Cons: Teachers must assess clip suitability for their own classes, so the collection does not remove that judgment from lesson planning.

Alternatives

Browse the Educational Video Libraries category to compare more services in this space. Choose ClickView if you want a free teacher account with a free trial and Android, iOS and web access; its free school allocation is 10 video streams per month, rising to up to 35 by inviting others. Into Film+ is a free web option for English state schools funded by the Department for Education with a valid PVS Licence, with a 600+ title catalogue. Choose PBS LearningMedia for a free web service aimed at PreK–12 educators and students, noting that a free account is required for all features. TED-Ed offers free web tools for creating and consuming lessons, rather than a curriculum-linked archive of NFSA collection clips. Australian Screen Online (ASO) Education is another freely available web resource. Open Yale Courses provides free public access without registration, but does not grant Yale course credit, a degree or a certificate. Docuseek is worth considering for single-title or collection streaming licenses, with paid fees specified by or through Docuseek and periods ranging from one week to Life of File. NFB Education may suit institutions seeking hosted films and teacher resources under an institutional licence; contact info@nfb.ca for licensing details.

Verdict

Choose NFSA Digital Resource Finder if you teach in a relevant Australian curriculum context and want free collection clips paired with classroom material, with MP4 downloads for offline use. The combination of curriculum search, teaching resources and no-login access is its clearest advantage. Look elsewhere if modern browser playback, commercial usage rights or a different curriculum focus is essential.
