Overview

Hashnode pairs a technical editor with blog management, including custom domains, code-based theme customization, scheduling, and analytics. That makes it a practical home for an engineering blog that needs a distinct identity and a steady publishing workflow. The trade-off is that readers planning to integrate or operate it through its GraphQL API must budget for Pro.

Key features

Technical writing and publication control

Syntax highlighting across 25 languages, raw Markdown, LaTeX, tables, and embeds cover the formats common in developer writing. Custom domains come with certificates handled by Hashnode, while theme customization through custom code offers more control for people comfortable editing code. Scheduling and blog analytics help manage a publication, though the platform is not simply a blank canvas for teams seeking unrestricted frontend control.

Headless CMS and Pro workflow

Hashnode can act as a headless CMS behind a custom frontend, but reading and publishing through GraphQL both require Pro. That restriction matters for teams evaluating Hashnode as infrastructure rather than only as a hosted blog. Pro also includes an in-editor AI assistant for outlines, rewrites, and summaries; webhooks that send content-change notifications to Slack, Zapier, or HTTP endpoints; GitHub backup of posts and drafts as Markdown; and bulk Markdown import that maps titles, tags, canonical URLs, and original publication dates. These are useful workflow tools, but they are tied to the paid plan.

Integrations and data controls

Analytics integrations include Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Facebook Pixel, Plausible, Fathom, Hotjar, Matomo, Meta Tags, Koala, and Microsoft Clarity. Hashnode says it uses HTTPS, secure httpOnly session cookies, and rate limiting; it also says it does not sell or rent personal information and lets users export content or delete an account. Support is available at hello@hashnode.com. The service is not available to children under 13.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes one publication with unlimited articles. It is enough for an individual blog, but does not include the Pro-only GraphQL reading and publishing, AI writing tools, webhooks, GitHub sync, or bulk import.

Pro costs 5.00 USD per month (billed $5 / month) and includes up to 10 publications per account: one Pro publication plus nine free publications, with unlimited articles. It is the relevant tier for API-based publishing or the added workflow features; the account allowance can suit users managing several publications. The Free plan remains the lower-commitment choice for a single publication that does not need those Pro capabilities.

Platforms

Hashnode is available on web and through an API. The API's Pro gate makes the distinction important: web publishing can fit a free single-publication setup, while API-based reading and publishing call for the paid plan.

Who it's for

Hashnode is best for developers and engineering teams that want to publish technical content with Markdown-oriented writing features, a custom domain, and built-in publication management. It is less compelling for a team whose core requirement is GraphQL-driven publishing on a free plan, or for users who do not want code-based theme customization.

Pros and cons

Pro: Technical formats including syntax highlighting for 25 languages, LaTeX, tables, embeds, and raw Markdown suit engineering articles.
Pro: Custom domains with certificates handled by Hashnode, scheduling, and analytics combine publication identity with routine management.
Pro: Pro adds API access, GitHub Markdown backups, webhooks, bulk import, and in-editor AI tools for a defined workflow upgrade.
Con: GraphQL reading and publishing are Pro-only, so API-dependent projects cannot stay on the free tier.
Con: Theme customization is through custom code, which puts it out of reach for users seeking purely visual design controls.

Alternatives

For broader choices, browse Writing Apps and Blogging Platforms.

Etherpad is a free, open-source option with an open data format and support across web, desktop, mobile, and self-hosted platforms; choose it when open-source software or self-hosting matters more than Hashnode's developer-blog features.
Celtx offers a free studio with one project, cloud-based script editors, and real-time collaboration; choose it for script-focused work.
Write.as offers a free personal blog with branding and a stated 3–15 posts per day; choose it when a simple personal blog is the priority.
Overleaf has a free plan with unlimited projects and one collaborator per project; choose it for collaborative LaTeX projects.
LyX is free software for Linux, macOS, and Windows; choose it when a desktop document editor is a better fit than a hosted blog.
Substack is free to start with no platform fees, tiers, or contracts; choose it when those terms fit better than Hashnode's publication-focused setup.
WriterDuet has a free plan with three projects; choose it for a project-based writing tool.
Campfire offers a free trial with limited access to writing and worldbuilding modules and no credit card requirement; choose it to try those modules instead.

Verdict

Choose Hashnode for a developer publication that needs technical writing support, a custom domain, and straightforward management, with a free single-publication starting point. Its main reason to look elsewhere is the Pro requirement for GraphQL reading and publishing; teams building around the API should weigh that cost before committing.
