Overview

BoardEffect is a board-governance platform built for mission-driven organizations, especially boards with substantial meeting and oversight work. Its combination of meeting, document and workflow tools is compelling for complex organizations, but custom pricing and a specific HIPAA condition make fit and procurement important.

Key features

A secure central hub holds agendas, minutes, documents and board books for access across devices. Members can prepare and distribute agendas, share updates, vote digitally and collaborate in real time. This breadth suits boards that want meeting preparation and follow-through in one system; smaller groups seeking only document storage may not need the additional workflow layer.

AI Smart Meeting Minutes turns notes and transcripts into draft minutes and captures decisions and action items. That can shorten the path from discussion to follow-up, while formal minutes still call for human review. Role-based permissions help separate access to sensitive materials, and in-platform comments and annotations keep discussion attached to documents.

Task tracking, calendar sync, version control, electronic signatures, surveys and reporting extend the platform beyond meetings. Integrations cover SSO, web services and APIs, pre-packaged integrations, Diligent governance tools, and Google, iCal and Outlook calendars. Mobile apps support offline access, useful for members who need materials away from a reliable connection. Diligent also provides 24/7 expert support and onboarding.

Diligent lists compliance resources for SOC 2, SOC 1, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27017, ISO/IEC 27018, TX-RAMP, IRAP, HIPAA, CCPA, GDPR and VPAT for its Boards product. Organizations handling protected health information must purchase the HIPAA-compliant offering in the order form before providing that information.

Pricing

BoardEffect is paid, with custom pricing; the plan is offered through a demo and pricing request. That makes it a better fit for organizations evaluating a full governance platform than for teams choosing on a published per-seat budget. No free plan or trial is stated.

Plan	Price	Includes
BoardEffect	Custom pricing	Meeting agendas, minutes management, board voting, committee management, mobile app, anonymous reporting, phone hotline and workflow automation

The listed plan covers a broad set of board and reporting functions, but there is no published seat allowance or quota to compare against a board’s size. Confirm pricing and terms for the organization’s expected membership and use before committing.

Platforms

BoardEffect supports web, Android and iOS, and includes API access. That mix accommodates desktop governance work, mobile board access and integration into an existing stack.

Who it's for

Nonprofits, foundations, healthcare systems, higher education institutions and credit unions are the intended users. It is particularly suited to organizations coordinating committees, protected governance materials, voting and follow-up across a board. Organizations handling protected health information should proceed only with the specified HIPAA-compliant offering; teams with modest meeting needs may find the breadth and custom-pricing sales process more than they need.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad governance coverage: Agendas, minutes, voting, committees, reporting and workflow automation sit alongside document management.
Useful follow-through: AI minutes capture decisions and action items, while task tracking and signatures support work after meetings.
Stack and access options: APIs, SSO and calendar integrations pair with mobile apps and offline access.
Support and compliance breadth: 24/7 expert support and onboarding accompany a wide range of compliance resources.

Cons

Custom pricing: Teams cannot compare a published BoardEffect price or seat cap before requesting pricing.
PHI requires a specific purchase: Healthcare organizations must secure the HIPAA-compliant offering in the order form before providing protected health information.
Potentially more platform than small boards need: Its committee, permissions and workflow breadth is most valuable when governance work is substantial.

Alternatives

For smaller or budget-conscious boards, Board I.V. offers a free plan and trial across Android, iOS and web; its maker says it is built by someone with 40 years inside nonprofit boardrooms. BoardKite is another freemium web option, with a free three-user plan and a Core plan at 39.00 EUR per month for up to 10 members. Choose either when a free entry point and a smaller board are priorities.

BoardSite offers a free plan capped at five users, 10 documents and one vote per month, plus a Starter plan at 79.00 USD per month billed annually for up to 12 users. NonprofitBOD has a free forever plan for one board and up to five members, with meetings, agendas, minutes and a document library. Those are stronger starting points for boards willing to work within explicit free-plan limits.

Quorum starts with a Starter plan at 49.00 USD per month or 490.00 USD per year for up to seven board members, including a launch checklist, document library and board votes. My Board View is a free web option for scheduling, attendance, minutes and board documents. Consider Quorum for a priced small-board package or My Board View for free, core meeting administration.

BoardSpot is a paid alternative with a trial and an Essentials plan at 105.00 USD per month that includes unlimited document storage and committees with no additional user cost. Nonprofit Liaison is another paid option. Compare either if you want to assess a different paid board-management product.

Verdict

BoardEffect is a strong choice for mission-driven organizations that need connected board meetings, governance workflows and protected document access across committees. Its main advantage is the scope of the platform, from AI-supported minutes to integrations and follow-up tools; its main reason to look elsewhere is custom pricing, especially for smaller boards, along with the order-form requirement for protected health information.
