Overview

Bonita brings process modeling, application development and operational controls into one platform for organizations coordinating complex work across teams and systems. It is strongest where processes need governance, human decisions and deployment control; small projects may find the monthly instance ceiling restrictive.

Now presented by Ofelia, Bonita is aimed at regulated and mission-critical operations, including banking and insurance, public services, healthcare, and aerospace and defense. Ofelia says it was founded in 2009 as Bonitasoft and became Ofelia in 2026.

Key features

Design and build process applications

Bonita Fabric combines a Process Designer that turns natural-language descriptions into BPMN models with BPA Studio for complex rules, integrations and SLA enforcement. The low-code UI Builder adds forms, dashboards and application views. That breadth can reduce the gap between modeling a process and giving people an interface to carry it out, though the toolset is geared toward substantial process applications rather than a simple standalone form.

Bonita Work Hub gives business and IT teams visual builders and AI-assisted prompting for creating applications without code. The platform also supports visual workflow building, event triggers, execution observability and human approvals, making it relevant when work must move between automated steps and people.

AI, integration and control

Bonita includes OpenAI and Mistral connectors, an AI Agent Orchestrator, and document processing to extract, classify and structure documents. These capabilities are useful for teams incorporating AI into process flows, alongside connectors and APIs for LDAP/AD, CRM platforms, databases, UiPath, REST APIs, ERP systems and Jira.

REST and Java APIs provide another route into the runtime. Bonita can run on-premise or in a customer's own infrastructure, including its own cloud, with configurable data residency. Enterprise includes role-based access control, SSO through SAML or OIDC, audit trails and SLA enforcement. Ofelia says it is ISO 27001 certified and describes premium enterprise support with direct access to senior engineers and no tiered support model. These controls make the platform a more natural fit for teams with governance requirements than for those seeking only lightweight workflow automation.

Pricing

Bonita Free costs 0.00 USD per free. It has no time limit and requires no credit card, but is community-supported and capped at 150 process instances per month. That makes it a practical option for evaluating Bonita or running a small-scale deployment; the monthly ceiling is a material constraint for production processes with meaningful volume.

Bonita Enterprise has custom pricing and a 99.5% uptime SLA. It is the relevant plan for organizations that need enterprise governance and support, but teams must request pricing to assess cost. Bonita offers a free trial, while the Free plan itself has no time limit.

Platforms

Bonita supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows environments, with a hybrid deployment model. Desktop downloads are available for Windows, macOS (Intel) and Linux. The combination of self-hosted deployment and configurable data residency suits organizations that need control over where process data runs; teams standardizing on another environment should confirm platform fit before choosing it.

Who it's for

Bonita is best suited to teams building governed process applications for complex, regulated or mission-critical work, especially in banking and insurance, the public sector, healthcare, and aerospace and defense. Its process design, integration options, human approvals and deployment controls address needs that extend beyond basic forms or task routing. Small teams with low-volume needs can start on Free, but the 150-instance monthly limit may quickly become a reason to move to Enterprise or choose a narrower tool.

Pros and cons

Pros: Process modeling, low-code application building and workflow operations sit in one platform, reducing fragmentation for complex process work.
Pros: On-premise and self-hosted deployment with configurable data residency gives infrastructure-conscious teams meaningful control over deployment.
Pros: REST and Java APIs, broad enterprise connectors, SSO, audit trails and SLA enforcement support integration and governance needs.
Cons: Free is capped at 150 process instances per month, limiting its usefulness beyond testing and small deployments.
Cons: Enterprise uses custom pricing, so teams cannot assess its cost from a published price alone.
Cons: Free relies on community support, unlike Enterprise's premium support model.

Alternatives

For a narrower form-led requirement, consider formsflow.ai, which has a free plan and supports API, self-hosted and web deployment. Formspree is a more focused option for web and API form submissions: its Free plan allows 50 submissions per month, one team member, a 30-day archive and no file uploads, so it is a poor match for Bonita-scale process governance but may suit simple form intake.

Caluma is a free, open-source option for teams seeking a customizable self-hosted forms platform. Formstack Workflows is a paid web and API alternative; its Suite plan is 250.00 USD per month, billed annually, and includes Forms, Documents and Sign, three builder users, 100 forms and 5,000 submissions per month.

Jotform is a form-building alternative with web, iOS and Android support; its free Starter plan includes five forms and 100 monthly submissions. Form Approvals suits teams centered on approval routing, with a free tier capped at 20 responses per month, one admin, and unlimited requestors and approvers. FORMNA offers an AGPL-3.0 self-hosted open-source plan with all features included for qualifying organizations. Formspace is a web alternative whose free plan allows three team members, 20 responses and 10 workflow runs per month, with a 10MB file limit and one-day form version history.

Verdict

Choose Bonita when your team needs to design and run governed, integrated process applications and retain control over deployment. Its combination of process tools, APIs and enterprise controls is the central case for it. Look elsewhere if your need is limited to straightforward forms or low-volume workflows: the Free cap is low, while Enterprise requires a custom-pricing decision.
