Overview

HammerAI is a character-chat and roleplay platform with creative tools and a desktop option for running local language models. It suits roleplay writers who want to move between hosted AI and models on their own computer. Its mix of local and cloud use is a practical strength, but cloud features still bring provider-specific privacy and connectivity trade-offs.

Alongside character conversations, users can write stories, generate images, run group chats, and build lorebooks and personas. Persistent memory is supported, making HammerAI a broader creation environment than a chat-only tool.

It belongs in the wider AI Roleplay Chatbots category, though its desktop model support and image and text-to-speech credit options also matter to users building a creative workflow.

Key features

Roleplay and creation: Character chat, story writing, group chat, lorebooks, and personas provide several ways to develop a fictional setting. Image generation adds a visual component, though it consumes credits.
Local models: The desktop app uses Ollama and Llama.cpp; Ollama support covers more than 20 LLMs and allows users to bring an Ollama Modelfile. This gives technically inclined users model choice and a route to offline use after downloading models.
Cloud access: Cloud providers can include services accessed through OpenRouter. Cloud messages are capped on the free plan, and cloud use requires internet access.
Privacy and training: HammerAI says it does not collect conversation information or use user data and content to train or fine-tune its models. Messages sent to third-party AI providers may still be processed or retained by those providers, so local models are the clearer fit for users who want to avoid that cloud-provider exposure.
Offline boundary: Downloaded local models work offline on desktop. Cloud LLMs, image generation, and text-to-speech need an internet connection, limiting offline creative work to local-model use.
Safety: The service is for users at least 18 or the local age of consent, whichever is greater, and filters content including self-harm encouragement, graphic violence, and hate speech.

Pricing

HammerAI is freemium. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 600 cloud messages per day, an 8,192-token context, two cloud LLMs, local LLMs, and an LLM API proxy. That is a substantial daily allowance for casual use, but the smaller context and model selection distinguish it from paid tiers.

Subscriptions begin with Starter at 9.00 USD per month, billed $9 / month. It provides 1,500 credits per month, equivalent to 150 images or 300 TTS, unlimited cloud messages, a 16,384-token context, and four cloud LLMs. Advanced costs 18.00 USD per month, billed $18 / month, and raises the allowance to 3,500 monthly credits (350 images or 700 TTS), 32,768 tokens, and seven cloud LLMs. Ultimate is 35.00 USD per month, billed $35 / month, with 9,000 credits (900 images or 1,800 TTS), a 65,536-token context, and 14 cloud LLMs. These tiers are for users who need more image or speech generation capacity, longer context, or a broader cloud model selection; the free tier may be enough for users focused on local models and limited cloud chat.

One-time credit packs do not include the subscription's stated unlimited cloud messages or expanded context and model counts. Tiny costs 1.99 USD per once, billed $1.99, for 200 credits (20 images or 40 TTS); Small is 4.99 USD per once, billed $4.99, for 600 credits (60 images or 120 TTS); Medium is 9.99 USD per once, billed $9.99, for 1,300 credits (130 images or 260 TTS); Large is 19.99 USD per once, billed $19.99, for 3,000 credits (300 images or 600 TTS); Mega is 49.99 USD per once, billed $49.99, for 8,500 credits (850 images or 1,700 TTS); and Ultra is 99.99 USD per once, billed $99.99, for 20,000 credits (2,000 images or 4,000 TTS). Purchased credits never expire, while unused subscription credits expire at the end of each billing period and do not roll over. Packs fit occasional generation needs; a subscription is better suited to ongoing use of its monthly credits and cloud allowances.

Platforms

HammerAI offers web access and native iOS and Android apps. Desktop downloads are available for macOS Apple Silicon, Windows, and Linux packages for Debian, Flatpak, and RPM. Mobile chats and characters are stored on-device by default. Desktop is the natural choice for local models and offline use; mobile and web users depend on internet access for cloud features.

Who it's for

HammerAI is best suited to roleplay writers and character-chat users who want world-building and media tools in the same product, or desktop users who value running local models. It is less suitable for teams seeking a documented seat-based business plan: the plans described here are organized around individual credits and model access, not seats. Users relying on cloud providers should also be comfortable with those providers' possible processing or retention of messages.

Pros and cons

Pro — meaningful local-model choice: Ollama and Llama.cpp support, more than 20 Ollama models, Modelfile support, and offline operation after downloads give desktop users options beyond hosted chat.
Pro — broad roleplay toolkit: Stories, group chat, images, lorebooks, personas, and persistent memory support more than one kind of creative session.
Pro — generous free cloud allowance: 600 cloud messages per day plus local LLMs and an API proxy let users explore without a subscription.
Con — cloud privacy is not fully controlled by HammerAI: Third-party providers may process or retain messages sent to them.
Con — subscription credits expire: Monthly credits do not roll over, which penalizes intermittent image or TTS use compared with packs that never expire.
Con — offline scope is limited: Cloud chat, image generation, and text-to-speech require internet access.

Alternatives

Consider these alternatives if their specific limits or platform coverage better match your use:

Backyard AI has a free tier with 300 messages per week, one included model, and 16k maximum memory; its listed platforms are Android, iOS, macOS, and web. Choose it if that smaller message allowance and platform mix fit your needs.
Nastia offers uncensored chat, daily token limits, and basic companion customization on its free tier, with an Unlimited plan at 15.99 USD per month. It is a better fit if companion customization is the priority.
Plotto provides basic story-room AI chat with no message fee or limit, though other actions may cost coins or require payment. Choose it if unrestricted basic story-room messaging matters more than HammerAI's local-model desktop option.
SillyTavern is a free and open-source option available across Android, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. Choose it if free, open-source software is the deciding criterion.
Talkie is another alternative for readers comparing character-chat platforms.
VerseRP offers unlimited Verse Free messages, 50 successful Verse Echo replies per UTC day, and access to characters and creator tools on its free plan. Choose it if unlimited free messages and those creator tools suit your use.
Character.AI offers unlimited messaging, basic memory, and free Character Voice access on its free plan. It is worth considering if those free chat and voice features are the priority.
DreamGen is a web-only alternative with a free tier for trying its models and features, plus a Starter plan at 7.83 USD per month. Choose it if a web-only option and that lower listed monthly price better suit you.

Verdict

Choose HammerAI if you want character roleplay and world-building tools alongside desktop local models, with a free tier that supports both local use and substantial daily cloud messaging. Look elsewhere if your work depends on offline image or speech generation, or if you need to keep cloud messages away from third-party providers.
