Overview

Bottles organizes Windows prefixes into separate environments, each called a bottle. Gaming, Application, and Custom setups let users choose configurations and dependencies for different purposes, rather than treating every program alike. The project has been active since 2017 and describes itself as free software.

For builders comparing Windows Compatibility Layers or Game Compatibility Layers, Bottles is a Linux-focused option with a wider management toolkit than a bare runner: it brings installers, dependencies, graphics components, backups, and bottle transfers together.

Key features

Environments, runners, and installers

Each bottle can use a Gaming, Application, or Custom environment. Bottles supports Wine and Proton runners, including Soda, Caffe, Vaniglia, and CrossOver builds. Installers apply rules to set up programs automatically inside a bottle, reducing repetitive setup work. The community-maintained App Store adds Windows application installers with compatibility grades from Bronze through Platinum; those grades help set expectations, but do not guarantee that a particular program will work well.

Components and dependencies

Users can install and manage graphics components such as DXVK, VKD3D, DXVK-NVAPI, and LatencyFleX. A dependency manager draws on a public, community-driven repository of dependency manifests. Bottles also integrates with UMU: ProtoSoda is its default runner for games managed through UMU. This range is useful when a program needs a particular combination of components, though it makes Bottles more of a configuration manager than a single-click compatibility promise.

Versioning and safety

Versioning, backups, duplication, and importing bottles from other managers give users ways to preserve or move setups. On first launch, Bottles downloads components including runners and graphics libraries, then checks them against repository checksums; a failed check deletes the file and stops installation. The project recommends Flatpak, which bundles needed dependencies and is its most supported and tested release. However, exposing the system home directory to a runner breaks the Flatpak sandbox and can put personal files at risk, so users who value isolation should keep that access restricted.

Pricing

Bottles is free, with no free trial or paid plan to compare. The project offers donation options through GitHub Sponsors, PayPal, and LiberaPay. Its free status makes it accessible for individual use and team evaluation, but does not imply a commercial support package; users can turn to its documentation, bug reporting, feature requests, and dependency reporting channels.

Platforms

Bottles supports Linux and macOS, with Apple silicon support also identified. Its official recommended installation is Flatpak through Flathub, supported on major Linux distributions including Steam Deck. Flatpak is the only package the project describes as fully sandboxed. The recommended packaging and security guidance are specifically Linux-oriented, while macOS is also listed as a supported platform.

Connection-dependent features are blocked while offline. Users should account for that constraint if their workflow depends on downloading components or using online-backed features.

Who it's for

Bottles fits Linux users who run Windows applications or games and want to keep their configurations separated, manage dependencies and graphics components, or preserve and transfer prefixes. Its community installers can simplify setup for catalogued programs. It is a weaker fit for users who need reliable offline operation, expect every Windows program to work, or plan to expose personal files to runners while relying on Flatpak isolation.

Pros and cons

Pro: Separate Gaming, Application, and Custom environments help keep differing program configurations in distinct bottles.
Pro: Runner choice, graphics components, a dependency manager, and community installers give users several levers when tailoring compatibility.
Pro: Backups, versioning, duplication, and imports support preserving and moving bottle setups.
Pro: Flatpak bundles dependencies, is the recommended Linux installation, and checks first-run downloads against repository checksums.
Con: Connection-dependent features stop working offline, limiting use in disconnected environments.
Con: Granting runners access to the system home directory defeats Flatpak sandboxing and risks personal files.

Alternatives

Choose Boxedwine if GPL-licensed software and support across Linux, macOS, web, and Windows matter more than Bottles’ environment and component management. Crosswire is another free, GPL-3.0 option for macOS users. PlayOnLinux covers Linux and macOS, but its stated limitations include unsupported games and occasional performance decreases. Porting Kit is a macOS choice for installing Windows games and apps using Wineskin.

Q4Wine is a free, open software option for Linux and macOS. Hangover is a free Linux alternative. PlayOnMac is free for macOS and requires a supported Windows program. Weave is another free option for Linux.

Verdict

Choose Bottles if you run Windows software on Linux and want control over separate prefixes, runners, dependencies, and graphics components without paying for the manager. Its main advantage is how much setup and preservation it brings under one roof; look elsewhere if offline operation is essential, or if your workflow requires exposing personal files while keeping a sandbox intact.
