Overview

Courses span math, coding, data science, science, technology, and AI. Rather than relying on explanation alone, Brilliant asks learners to solve problems and see feedback as they work. That format is a good fit for people who want to build understanding through practice, but it is not a credential pathway: there are no completion certificates or degree programs.

Koji, Brilliant’s digital tutor, guides learners through reasoning step by step in most courses. That support can make self-directed study more manageable, though free accounts get only a limited preview. Brilliant requires an internet connection, and lessons cannot be downloaded, so it is a poor choice for commutes or locations with unreliable connectivity.

Key features

Courses, practice, and Koji

Free accounts can access all courses, but are limited to two lessons or practice sets per day and must work through them in sequence. Occasional ads and limited Koji access make this tier best for sampling topics or maintaining a modest daily routine, not for a concentrated study schedule. Premium lifts the daily cap, lets learners jump to any lesson, removes ads, and provides full Koji access. Those upgrades matter most to learners who want control over pace and regular tutoring support.

Educator tools and reporting

Eligible K–12 teachers and their students may qualify for free Premium through Brilliant for Educators, subject to application review. The program supports Google Classroom roster syncing and sharing lesson links through Google Classroom or another learning management system, which gives teachers a way to connect Brilliant coursework to an existing classroom workflow.

Educator reports track lesson completion, time spent, course progress, and completion dates. They do not show answer-level correctness or formal grades, so Brilliant can help teachers monitor participation and progress but cannot replace assessment tools that need to evaluate individual answers or produce grades. Brilliant says its educator program complies with COPPA, FERPA, and GDPR and does not sell student data or use it for marketing. Its stated security program includes organizational, technical, and administrative safeguards, while acknowledging that internet transmissions cannot be guaranteed completely secure.

Pricing

Brilliant uses a subscription model with a free tier and paid individual, family, and group options. The annual individual and family prices are billed as one payment, despite the monthly-equivalent wording in their plan descriptions.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
Free	0.00 USD per free	All courses; two lessons or practice sets per day; limited Koji preview; occasional ads	Topic sampling or a short daily learning habit
Individual Premium (annual)	20.00 USD per year	Unlimited access to all courses, no ads, one subscription across devices	One learner who wants unrestricted study
Family Premium (annual)	40.00 USD per year	Six seats, unlimited access to all courses, no ads	Households sharing access across up to six learners
Group Annual	Custom pricing	Three seats included; for 3 to 50 people; $10.10/month for each extra seat	Small groups needing shared access

Individual Premium renews annually and can be canceled anytime; the $20.00 USD per year charge is billed as one payment, not monthly. Family Premium is likewise billed as one $40.00 USD per year payment. The free plan has no stated trial period; its practical trade-off is the daily cap, sequential lessons, ads, and reduced tutor access rather than a course-access barrier. Group pricing is custom, so teams should weigh the per-extra-seat charge against their seat count before choosing it.

Platforms

Brilliant is available on Android, iOS, and the web, and its mobile apps allow learners to continue across devices. That cross-device access does not extend to offline study: an internet connection is required and course lessons cannot be downloaded.

Who it's for

Brilliant is strongest for curious self-directed learners who want structured problem-solving in math and adjacent STEM subjects, with feedback and optional step-by-step tutoring. It also suits eligible K–12 teachers who want to share lessons through classroom systems and track course progress without relying on Brilliant for grades. It is less suitable for learners who need downloadable lessons, formal credentials, extensive free daily study, or reports on answer correctness.

Pros and cons

Pro: Premium removes the daily limit and opens full Koji access, which supports learners who want a self-paced course experience.
Pro: Eligible K–12 educators and students may get Premium without charge, with Google Classroom syncing and lesson sharing support.
Con: Free study stops at two lessons or practice sets per day and proceeds in sequence, limiting focused progress.
Con: Lessons require an internet connection and cannot be downloaded, excluding dependable offline study.
Con: Educator reports omit answer-level correctness and formal grades, so they are not a substitute for assessment and grading systems.
Con: Brilliant offers no certificates or degrees, making it a learning service rather than a route to formal credentials.

Alternatives

For classroom math options, MobyMax has a free educator version with limited access compared with licensed features and supports more platforms, including macOS and Windows. Monster Math is another freemium option with a free trial and an annual Premium plan at 59.99 USD per year, suited to readers comparing a dedicated app subscription. MathScore offers free topics at every K–8 grade level and a paid first-student plan at 9.95 USD per month, making it worth considering when grade-level topic access is the priority. Waggle Math is a paid K–8 practice option at 10.00 USD per contact, with final pricing dependent on account and contract details.

BrainTrail provides a free family tier for one learner and one 10-question trail per concept, while its classroom plan is priced separately. GeoGebra is a free, freemium alternative available across a broader range of platforms. Mathigon is a free option for learners seeking another math platform. Prodigy Math offers a freemium plan and paid memberships, including a Core plan at 58.95 USD per year.

Readers comparing broader categories can also browse Math Learning Apps, MOOC Platforms, and Learning Gamification Software.

Verdict

Brilliant is a strong choice for independent learners who want to practice STEM reasoning with visual models, immediate feedback, and a tutor that can guide them through problems. Its main advantage is that coherent practice-and-feedback format across subjects; its main drawbacks are the free tier’s two-lesson daily ceiling and the lack of offline access. Choose Premium for unrestricted self-paced study, or look elsewhere if you need credentials, offline lessons, or classroom reporting that grades answers.
