Overview

Buddi centers on a simple budgeting loop: set up accounts and categories, record transactions, and review spending habits. That keeps the product approachable for users who need basic financial organization, while teams looking for broader financial workflows should look elsewhere.

The project has been around since 2010 and is licensed under GPLv2. Its latest listed version is Buddi-3.4.1.14, with stable files dated 2019-04-03. That release age is a practical caveat for users depending on compatibility with newer environments or plugins.

Key features

Alongside transaction tracking, Buddi provides budget and reporting views. The project wiki documents a main reports window, a net worth graph, an income pie graph, and a main budget window. These offer different ways to inspect a budget, though the documented emphasis remains on core personal finance rather than advanced analysis.

CSV and QIF import and export are available through a separate Buddi Plugins project. Older .buddi files require the Import Legacy Buddi Data plugin; the default format is .buddi3. The project also notes that older plugins may need updated versions or recompilation after a Buddi version change, so users relying on imports should verify their plugin path before committing to it.

The project describes Buddi Live as an online version accessible from mobile devices, but says phones are difficult to use and tablets work better. That makes it a limited mobile option rather than a clear substitute for desktop budgeting.

Pricing

Buddi is free, with a free plan priced at 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because the core software costs nothing. The plan includes GPLv2 budgeting software and the latest listed release, Buddi-3.4.1.14; no paid tiers are described, so there is no cheaper tier that gives up features. Users should account for the separate plugin requirements when planning imports.

Platforms

Buddi supports Linux, macOS, and Windows. That cross-desktop coverage is useful for households or small teams using different operating systems, though the product remains desktop-oriented. Support is provided through SourceForge discussion forums and a support section. The project does not state security or compliance features, so organizations with formal controls to meet should evaluate those needs separately.

Who it's for

Buddi is best for individuals who want free, basic budgeting across desktop operating systems and are comfortable recording transactions against accounts and categories. It is less suitable for users with legacy Buddi files, plugin-dependent workflows, or a requirement for a recently dated release unless they can confirm compatibility first.

Pros and cons

Pros: No-cost budgeting covers account and category setup, transaction recording, spending review, and documented budget and reporting views.
Pros: Linux, macOS, and Windows support gives desktop users flexibility across operating systems.
Pros: The project lists 13 interface languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Cons: Stable files dated 2019-04-03 make release recency a concern for users needing current compatibility.
Cons: CSV and QIF support depends on separate plugins, and older plugins may need updating or recompilation.
Cons: Legacy .buddi files need an import plugin rather than the default .buddi3 handling.

Alternatives

These alternatives focus on bootable USB creation rather than budgeting, so they are not direct substitutes for Buddi. Pick one only if your need is bootable media instead of managing finances.

RMPrepUSB is a Windows option with a free plan; commercial use and redistribution require permission or licensing.
Universal USB Installer supports Windows and Linux, recommends an 8GB+ USB drive, and supports persistence up to 40GB.
Ventoy is a free, open-source bootable USB utility for Linux and Windows.
WinSetupFromUSB is a free Windows option with no paid plans or usage limits stated.
YUMI is described as free and open source, with Windows and Linux support for USB flash drives or microSD.
Boot-Repair is free GNU-GPL licensed software for Linux.
Easy2Boot is a free option for Linux and Windows; its menu system uses open-source components and plain-text scripts, while its download includes closed-source Windows utilities.
Rufus is free GPL v3 software for Windows.

Verdict

Choose Buddi if you want no-cost, cross-desktop budgeting built around accounts, categories, and transaction tracking. Its reports and multilingual interface add useful breadth without changing that simple focus. Look elsewhere if legacy imports, dependable plugin compatibility, or a more recently dated release are essential to your workflow.
