Overview

Buildah can produce images from Dockerfiles or Containerfiles, from working containers, or from command-driven scripts. The choice matters: standard build files suit repeatable conventional workflows, while script-based construction gives builders another route when those files do not fit. It also handles working containers and images, including mounting and unmounting containers and pulling or pushing images.

Rather than running a persistent daemon, Buildah uses a fork-exec model. That is a good fit for teams that prefer a builder without a long-running service. Its Go API can be vendored into other tools; Podman uses that API for Dockerfile image builds and can be installed independently.

Key features

Rootless builds: Buildah can build with or without Dockerfiles without root privileges. That helps where elevated access is restricted, although it does not remove the need for a compatible Linux kernel.
OCI and Docker formats: Supporting both image formats gives teams room to match existing container workflows rather than commit to one output.
Working-container control: The CLI can create, mount, unmount, delete and rename working containers, and create or delete images. This makes it useful for image workflows that need explicit container operations, not just build commands.
Registry transfers: Buildah can pull from a specified location and push images from local storage. Use fully qualified names from trusted registries or digests: short names can be spoofed.
API for integration: The Go API can be incorporated into other tools, and Podman demonstrates this integration for Dockerfile builds. Teams seeking an independently installable container engine can use Podman alongside Buildah.

Pricing

Buildah costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is an open-source command-line tool with no paid tiers or usage limits stated, so there is no paid upgrade path to weigh against a quota. It is a straightforward fit for individuals and teams able to operate the tool in their own Linux environments; there is no free trial because the free plan is the offering.

Platforms

Buildah supports Linux hosts and is available through packages for distributions including Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, openSUSE, RHEL and Ubuntu. Windows containers are not supported. The host needs a kernel that supports OverlayFS or fuse-overlayfs; RHEL and CentOS require version 7.4 or later. Commands that run a container with buildah run, or process a Dockerfile RUN instruction, use runc. These requirements make kernel and runtime compatibility a deployment consideration, not an afterthought.

The project provides tutorials, releases and a mailing list, where maintainers say they answer Buildah questions. The project is maintained by the containers organization.

Who it's for

Buildah is a strong choice for Linux-first developers and platform teams that want to build images without root privileges or a persistent daemon, especially when a workflow needs both Dockerfile-based and script-driven construction. Its API also suits tool authors who want to incorporate image-building capability through Go.

Look elsewhere if your build hosts need to run Windows or macOS, or if your team needs a hosted build service rather than a Linux command-line tool. Teams should also confirm kernel support and account for runc where their build commands execute RUN instructions.

Pros and cons

Pro — Rootless operation: Builds do not require root, useful in environments where privileged execution is undesirable or unavailable.
Pro — Flexible build inputs: Dockerfiles, Containerfiles, working containers and scripts cover both conventional and custom image assembly.
Pro — No daemon: The fork-exec model avoids a persistent builder service.
Pro — No-cost use: The free open-source plan has no stated usage limits or paid tiers.
Con — Linux only: Teams requiring Windows or macOS hosts need another builder.
Con — Kernel and runtime prerequisites: OverlayFS or fuse-overlayfs support is required, and runc is used for commands that execute containers or RUN instructions.
Con — Registry name caution: Short image names can be spoofed, so teams must use fully qualified trusted names or digests to reduce ambiguity.

Alternatives

BuildKit is another free option and is listed for Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted environments; choose it when those additional host platforms matter.

AWS CodeBuild is a paid, usage-based service with a free plan and charges tied to compute resources, build duration and selected compute type. Consider it when that usage-based service model fits better than a Linux command-line builder.

Earthly is a free option with Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted platform listings; it may fit teams that need those platform options.

Google Cloud Build offers a free allowance of 2,500 build-minutes per billing account each month, then charges $0.006 per build-minute on the default pool. It is a fit for teams that prefer a cloud build service and can work within its allowance and metered pricing.

werf is another free option listed for Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted environments.

Depot starts with a Developer plan at 20.00 USD per month for one user, with stated Docker build, Depot CI and GitHub Actions minute allocations. It is worth considering when a paid plan with allocated build minutes suits the workflow.

Tilt is a free, Apache-2.0 project for Linux, macOS and Windows; consider it if those host platforms are needed.

Cloud Native Buildpacks Pack is a free CLI and Go library for Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted use, with no paid plans. It is an alternative for teams seeking that CLI-and-library combination.

Verdict

Choose Buildah if your team builds on Linux and values rootless, daemon-free image creation with both file-based and scriptable workflows. Its no-cost, flexible model is compelling for Linux-first stacks; look elsewhere when cross-platform hosts or a hosted build service are requirements.
