Overview

Turborepo is a build system for JavaScript and TypeScript workspaces, built around task graphs, parallel execution, and cache sharing. It suits teams coordinating builds across a monorepo or single-package workspace, especially when they want local control over remote caching. Its appeal is focused orchestration; teams must declare task outputs to get file caching.

Created by Jared Palmer, Turborepo was acquired by Vercel and open-sourced in late 2021. It covers task graphs, affected builds, workspace boundaries, and both local and remote cache scope.

Compare it with other Monorepo Management Tools when evaluating workspace infrastructure.

Key features

Task graphs and affected builds

Turborepo models configured work as a task graph and parallelizes tasks across available cores. That makes it a practical fit for teams whose builds contain independent tasks that can run concurrently. Affected builds help focus work on what has changed, rather than treating every build as a full-workspace run.

Local and remote caching

Task outputs and logs are cached locally, while Remote Caching allows cache artifacts to be shared across machines. That can reduce repeated work between developer machines and CI, but caching files depends on declaring task outputs in configuration. Teams that leave outputs undeclared should not expect those files to be cached.

Vercel Remote Cache is free across Vercel plans, including for teams that do not host applications on Vercel. Vercel’s integration recognizes Turborepo repositories and configures Remote Cache without setup. Teams that prefer to operate their own cache can self-host one with an HTTP server implementing Turborepo’s Remote Caching API.

Cache integrity

Remote cache artifacts can be signed with HMAC-SHA256, and Turborepo can verify their integrity and authenticity when downloading them. This gives teams a defined integrity check for shared artifacts rather than relying on unsigned downloads.

Package managers and CI

The stable package-manager support policy covers pnpm 8+, npm 8+, Yarn 1+ including Plug’n’Play, and Bun 1.2+. CI guides provide recipes for Vercel, GitHub Actions, CircleCI, GitLab CI, Travis CI, and Buildkite, giving teams across those systems a documented integration path.

Pricing

Turborepo with Vercel Remote Cache costs 0.00 USD per free, billed Free on all Vercel plans. The included upload quotas vary by plan: Hobby has 100 GB/month, Pro has 1 TB/month, and Enterprise has 4 TB/month. The cache itself is free on each plan, but teams should match their expected upload volume to the applicable quota.

Individual developers can seek free help through GitHub Discussions or Vercel Community. Companies can contact Vercel about paid support.

Platforms

The CLI is generally supported on Debian-based Linux distributions, macOS, and Windows on x86_64 and ARM64. Turborepo also supports self-hosted remote caching and is categorized for API use, giving teams options beyond a hosted cache service.

Who it's for

Turborepo is best suited to JavaScript and TypeScript teams that need task orchestration across workspace boundaries and want to share build artifacts locally, in CI, or through a remote cache. It is a strong fit when the team can define task outputs and values control over whether the remote cache is Vercel-hosted or self-hosted. Teams looking for caching without output configuration should weigh that requirement before adopting it.

Pros and cons

Parallel task execution: task graphs let Turborepo run independent work across available cores.
Local and remote cache options: teams can reuse outputs on one machine, share artifacts across machines, or self-host the remote-cache endpoint.
Free Vercel Remote Cache: it is available even to teams that do not host applications on Vercel, with uploads governed by the plan-specific monthly quota.
Output configuration is required: files from tasks are cached only when their outputs are declared, adding configuration work and a constraint on what gets reused.
Support differs by audience: individual developers have free community channels, while companies must contact Vercel about paid support.

Alternatives

Bumpy is another free option with no paid plans or usage limits; consider it when that model is a priority.

Bazel is a free, open-source build and test tool from Google, and is an alternative for teams seeking that broader build-and-test framing.

npm is a better fit when the need is public package publishing and registry access rather than workspace task orchestration.

Blaze is another free option.

Lerna is worth comparing for teams that want a monorepo tool with contributor and CI connection allowances on its free Hobby plan, or a paid Team tier.

Nx is another freemium monorepo option, with a free Hobby plan that includes contributor and concurrent CI connection allowances.

Rush is a free, open-source JavaScript monorepo manager installable via npm.

Visulima Task Runner is another free option for Linux and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Turborepo if your JavaScript or TypeScript team needs parallel task execution and cache sharing across a workspace, particularly if you want free Vercel Remote Cache or the option to self-host. Look elsewhere if configuring task outputs is an unacceptable burden or if your primary need is package publishing rather than build orchestration.
