Overview

LexNebulis combines legal practice management and trust accounting for small firms that want to run their own software. Its broad workflow coverage and $0 price make it worth considering for technically capable teams, but firms seeking a hosted service should look elsewhere.

The platform spans client and matter records, documents, calendars, time tracking, billing, and trust accounts, alongside legal workflows such as conflict checks, intake, document generation, e-signatures, and a client portal. That breadth can consolidate routine practice work; the trade-off is responsibility for operating the platform yourself. Compare it with Legal Practice Management Software, Legal Accounting Software, Legal Trust Accounting Software, and Trust Accounting Software.

Key features

Billing supports LEDES 1998B and 2000 export, UTBMS codes, and electronic invoice submission. Those capabilities suit firms working with those billing formats, while matter-level billing, client ledgers, three-way reconciliation, and compliance reporting give the trust-accounting side meaningful scope beyond basic payment tracking.

Payment connections include Stripe and LawPay; accounting workflows can use QuickBooks or CSV export, and storage integrations include Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive. This range can fit teams already using those services. OIDC and SAML 2.0 single sign-on, SCIM 2.0 provisioning, and SIEM export via webhooks and syslog are relevant for firms with established identity and monitoring practices.

Security measures include encryption at rest and in transit, bcrypt password hashing, JWT authentication, and TOTP or WebAuthn/FIDO2 two-factor authentication. The append-only audit log uses SHA-256 hash chaining to make tampering or deletion detectable. API documentation is accessible at /api/docs on a running instance, giving developers a documented interface to inspect once deployed.

Pricing

Free, open-source — 0.00 USD per free is the listed plan, self-hosted under Apache License 2.0. The repository says commercial use is allowed, so there is no per-seat software charge described. This is a strong fit for firms able to supply and maintain their own infrastructure; the price does not remove the operational work of running the service.

Platforms

LexNebulis is a web application for self-hosted Linux deployment, with API access. Installation requires Docker and Docker Compose v2, at least 2 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of disk space. The guide recommends Ubuntu 22.04 or later; macOS is supported for development rather than identified as a production server target. Teams without Linux and container-operation capacity may find the deployment requirement decisive.

Who it's for

The project targets small law firms with 1 to 50 users. Firms that need matter management, legal workflows, billing, and trust accounting in one self-hosted system are the clearest fit, especially if they value control over deployment and integrations. It is less suited to teams that require a managed hosted product or cannot take responsibility for server operations.

Pros and cons

Pro: Practice management and trust accounting sit in the same platform, including client ledgers, reconciliation, and compliance reporting; this can reduce the need to split those workflows across separate systems.
Pro: Apache 2.0 licensing and a 0.00 USD per free plan allow commercial use without a software subscription charge.
Pro: Identity, provisioning, audit, and SIEM integrations give security-conscious teams options for fitting the system into existing controls.
Con: Docker-based Linux deployment and stated minimum server resources put infrastructure ownership on the firm.
Con: The production guide points to Linux, so firms seeking a hosted service or a supported production deployment on other platforms should consider alternatives.

Alternatives

Affinity is a paid web and Windows option with an API, worth considering when those platforms better match the firm's stack.

Actionstep is a paid option without a free plan and offers Android and iOS platforms; consider it if mobile platform availability is important.

BarBooks is paid, offers a free trial, and supports web, desktop, and mobile platforms; it may suit firms wanting to evaluate a multi-platform option before paying.

CosmoLex is a paid web and mobile alternative with a free trial; its Launch plan is 49.00 USD per month, billed monthly, per user, and includes time tracking, invoicing, online payments, trust accounting, and ledgers.

LegalClaw is another free option, with Linux and macOS platforms.

Account Legal is a paid option with a free trial and mobile, desktop, and web platforms; its 1 Month plan is 19.94 USD per month and includes unlimited access, multiple trust accounts, unlimited clients, and downloadable client and account reports.

IOLTA Guard is a paid web option with a free trial. Its Solo Practitioner plan is 99.00 USD per month for 1 user and 1 bank account, while Basic is 199.00 USD per month for 3 users and 3 bank accounts.

TriBalance is a paid web option without a free trial; its Solo plan is 79.00 USD per month for 1 trust account and 1 user, with PDF and CSV export.

Verdict

Choose LexNebulis if your small firm wants broad practice and trust-accounting workflows without a software subscription and can operate its own Linux server. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of commercial-use open-source licensing and a wide legal workflow set; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the infrastructure responsibility that comes with self-hosting.
