Overview

CamillaDSP is a free, open-source real-time audio-processing toolkit for people who need to shape and route sound rather than apply a single preset adjustment. It is strongest for builders configuring active crossovers, room correction or multi-stage DSP; its flexibility comes with a configuration burden and possible migration work at major releases.

The Rust engine runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, with ALSA, PulseAudio, JACK, WASAPI and CoreAudio backends. Its low-latency pipeline combines filters and mixers, including IIR biquads and FIR filters processed through FFT/IFFT convolution. Channel mixing, resampling, dynamic loudness and chained filter stages make it suitable for signal paths that need more than equalization alone.

Key features

Crossovers and correction

For active speaker systems, CamillaDSP can split audio into frequency bands and route them to separate amplifiers and drivers, with control over crossover slopes and time alignment. That makes it a fit for carefully configured multi-way systems, not a turnkey crossover wizard. For room correction, it applies FIR correction filters alongside EQ and delay adjustment, letting users combine correction and routing in one processing pipeline.

Local control and automation

CamillaGUI is a web interface served by a small local backend. Users can build and edit the pipeline, monitor levels and apply changes live from a browser without an internet connection. This keeps control available on a local system, though the interface still depends on the backend running on that machine.

For automation, pyCamillaDSP connects to a running engine through its WebSocket API, enabling Python scripts and hardware-controller integrations. The engine must be started with its WebSocket server enabled using the -p flag, so this path suits users comfortable managing the process as well as the client code.

Pricing

CamillaDSP is free software, with no free trial or paid plan to weigh against its core capabilities. It is offered under either GPL version 3 or Mozilla Public License 2.0; an ASIO-backend build is GPLv3-only. That choice matters for teams integrating or distributing modified software, which should review the applicable license before adopting a build.

Platforms

The engine runs on Linux, macOS and Windows and supports ALSA, PulseAudio, JACK, WASAPI and CoreAudio. CamillaGUI runs in a local browser, while the API and Python integration support automation. It is therefore suited to self-hosted audio setups across desktop operating systems, rather than a cloud-hosted workflow.

Who it's for

Choose CamillaDSP when you need a configurable engine for crossover design, room correction or an advanced audio pipeline, and can own the setup and configuration. It also fits developers automating an existing CamillaDSP process through Python. It is a weaker fit for someone seeking a simple, ready-made EQ utility or a system that should not require configuration upkeep: major releases may break compatibility and require configuration updates, while minor releases preserve compatibility with existing configurations. For questions and setup discussion, the maker recommends the diyAudio thread; GitHub issues are the route for bugs and feature requests.

Pros and cons

Pros: One pipeline covers active crossovers, FIR room correction, EQ, delay and broader channel-processing tasks, which avoids limiting the system to a single listening adjustment.
Pros: Local browser control works without internet, and the WebSocket API with Python support gives automation builders a route to integrate the running engine.
Pros: Free licensing and support for three desktop operating systems make it practical for self-hosted setups without a subscription.
Cons: The processing pipeline and local engine setup favor technically capable users over people who want an immediate preset-based solution.
Cons: Major-version configuration breaks can create migration work for maintained systems.
Cons: Python control requires the engine's WebSocket server to be enabled at startup, adding a setup dependency for integrations.

Alternatives

Browse Audio Equalizer Software for a broader set of equalizer options. For a macOS-only free alternative, EQBase has a free plan with core features; choose it when that narrower platform and simpler free-tier framing suit the job better than a configurable multi-platform DSP engine. Nahimic is another free option across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, though it requires an audio-driver update first.

SteelSeries Moments is a free Windows alternative. Buddi is also free and supports Linux, macOS and Windows, but its listed purpose is budgeting software rather than audio processing. DeskFX Audio Enhancer offers a free version on macOS and Windows. EqLume is a free Mac app, including a Mac App Store option for macOS 26.0 or later on Apple silicon. eqMac has a free macOS tier with community support and no Pro features. Radioform is a free GPLv3 macOS option with no subscription.

Verdict

CamillaDSP is the right choice for builders who want a free, self-hosted engine to combine crossover work, room correction and automation in a configurable pipeline. Its breadth and local control are the case for choosing it; configuration complexity and major-release compatibility changes are the reasons to look elsewhere if you need a low-maintenance, plug-and-play equalizer.
