Overview

Campfire brings drafting, story planning, collaboration and digital publishing into one platform, with a separate reading app and online eBook store. Authors can publish eBooks and digital bonus content through Campfire while retaining ownership and the ability to publish elsewhere. Monetizing authors connect Stripe to receive royalties and access sales analytics.

Projects remain visible only to invited people until they are shared or published, and Campfire says it backs up work using Amazon servers. It also states that storage is unlimited across its apps. These provisions support collaborative projects, though mobile writing requires an internet connection.

Key features

Manuscript workflow

The Manuscript Module combines drafting with chapter organization, an Index Card View, word-count goals and writing statistics. That mix can help authors keep structure and progress in view without separating planning from the manuscript.

Worldbuilding and collaboration

Campfire has modules for characters, cultures, items, locations, philosophies, religions, species, systems, an encyclopedia, magic, maps, research, timelines, arcs, calendars, languages and relationships. This range is a strong fit for fiction projects with interconnected settings and reference material; it may be more than a writer needs for a straightforward manuscript.

Authors can invite as many collaborators as they want to view, comment on or edit a project. The open-ended number of invitations makes the collaboration model flexible, while the available actions allow project owners to bring in readers as well as editors.

Export and publishing

Campfire compiles manuscripts for PDF and EPUB export, both ready for publication. Its built-in publishing currently covers eBooks and digital bonus content rather than every publishing format. Authors who want to sell through Campfire can track sales analytics and royalties through a connected Stripe account, but need not make Campfire their exclusive publishing channel.

Pricing

Campfire uses a freemium model. Try For Free costs 0.00 USD per free, is billed monthly, requires no credit card and provides limited access to writing and worldbuilding modules. It is a sensible way to explore the workflow, but the module restrictions make it less suitable as a complete home for a project that depends on Campfire’s broader planning tools.

Standard Monthly costs 19.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes access to all modules, collaboration, unlimited storage, and PDF and EPUB export, making it the more complete option for authors who rely on the full planning toolkit or need those exports. Campfire also states a paid starting price of $0.50/mo; the listed Standard Monthly plan is $19.00 USD per month.

Browser and desktop access enforce free-plan element limits, while the mobile app allows unlimited element creation. The difference matters for writers choosing where to build a project: mobile can create elements without that cap, but it lacks some modules and requires an internet connection.

Platforms

Campfire supports Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Its desktop app is free on Mac and Windows and supports offline writing sessions. The CF Creators mobile app is available for iOS and Android, but requires internet access and does not include every module. Writers who need offline access or the full module set should favor desktop over mobile for those tasks.

Who it's for

Campfire is best suited to authors who want drafting, detailed story planning and collaboration under one roof, especially those developing complex fictional worlds. It also fits writers who value desktop offline writing or want the option to publish eBooks and digital extras through the platform. It is a weaker fit for mobile-first authors who need all modules on the go, or for writers whose work does not benefit from extensive worldbuilding.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad set of dedicated worldbuilding modules supports detailed, interconnected story planning.
Pros: Unlimited collaborator invitations allow projects to include viewers, commenters and editors without a stated seat cap.
Pros: Free Mac and Windows desktop apps support offline writing, and manuscripts can be exported as publication-ready PDF or EPUB files.
Cons: The free plan has limited module access, and browser and desktop use impose element limits.
Cons: The mobile app needs an internet connection and omits some modules, so it is not a full substitute for desktop access.
Cons: Built-in publishing is currently limited to eBooks and digital bonus content.

Alternatives

Book Writing Software is a category to explore if you want to compare writing tools more broadly. Game Wiki Software is another category for teams organizing game-related reference material, while Writing Apps offers a wider set of writing options.

Choose Novlr instead if its free plan’s two-project cap, online syncing, notes and planning grid, focus mode, writing sprints and analytics suit your needs better than Campfire’s extensive worldbuilding modules. DragonWriter is a free, online-only alternative for writers seeking a tool without ads or a paywall.

Novvler may suit writers who want AI assistance: its Pro plan is 9.00 USD per month and includes 15,000 AI words per month, grammar and style checks, and priority support. Plot Factory is worth considering if its Basic plan’s one-story, one-universe and 250-word daily narration limits fit a smaller project; Hobbyist costs 9.00 USD per month, with annual billing also offered at $90 / year.

LivingWriter offers a free plan with one manuscript, a 25,000-word cap, a full editor with chapters and subchapters, and PDF export. Wavemaker Cards is a free option for writers comparing planning tools across a broad range of platforms. Squibler may appeal if AI credits and book or screenplay creation are priorities; its Free plan includes 1,000 AI credits per month, and Plus costs 29.99 USD per month, billed annually.

Dabble is another option to consider if a free trial and access across mobile, desktop and web platforms are important; its Writer plan costs 19.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose Campfire if your writing benefits from extensive worldbuilding, collaborative access and a desktop workflow that can continue offline. Its key advantage is the combination of manuscript planning and dedicated story-reference modules, with export and optional publishing alongside them. Look elsewhere if your work is mobile-first and depends on access to every module, or if Campfire’s element limits on free browser and desktop use are too restrictive.
