Overview

Canal is a self-hosted change-data-capture tool for teams that need to turn MySQL binlog events into downstream records. It suits stacks built around MySQL and message queues; its Apache-2.0 license and zero-cost plan make it an accessible option, provided you can operate it yourself.

Canal behaves like a MySQL replica, requesting binlog data from the master and parsing the events. That log-based approach fits mirroring, real-time backup, index maintenance, cache refresh, and business-logic processing. It is not a managed capture service: deployment and operations remain with the team.

Key features

Binlog capture and compatibility

The README names MySQL 5.1.x, 5.5.x, 5.6.x, 5.7.x, and 8.0.x as supported sources. Release 1.1.8 also cites adaptation for MySQL 8.4, MariaDB 11, Percona 8.0, and PolarDB-X 2.0. This gives teams several database options, but source-version compatibility should be checked against the actual deployment before adoption.

Destinations and clients

Canal delivers changes natively to Kafka and RocketMQ; its quick start also includes RabbitMQ and Pulsar server modes, and release 1.1.8 announces a ClickHouse adapter. The breadth is useful when those destinations match an existing data path, though the listed options do not amount to a general-purpose destination catalog.

A Protocol Buffers 3.0 client-server protocol supports clients in Java, C#, Go, and Python. That is a practical fit for mixed-language teams that can build around the protocol and available clients.

Operations and security

Canal Admin provides a web UI for dynamically managing configuration, tasks, and logs, while native Prometheus monitoring provides an established way to observe the service. Docker images and a Docker QuickStart lower the barrier to an initial deployment. However, the default Docker setup runs only one Canal instance per Docker instance, a constraint to account for when planning deployment capacity.

Release 1.1.8 lists SSL/TLS connections to source MySQL and RabbitMQ SSL authentication support. Vulnerability reports go to Alibaba Security Response Center, and the project asks users to submit bugs and feature requests through GitHub issues.

Pricing

Canal: 0.00 USD per free. The Apache-2.0 open-source project is a fit for teams that want to run capture in their own environment without a software charge. The trade-off is self-management: the plan does not remove the need to deploy and operate Canal yourself.

Platforms

Canal is self-hosted, with API, Linux, and macOS among its listed platforms. Supported deployment environments also include Kubernetes, Linux, ACK Distro, AECP, and SOFAStack. Docker images and a QuickStart offer another deployment path, subject to the default one-instance limit.

Who it's for

Canal is best suited to engineering teams that need MySQL change records for downstream queues or processing, have a compatible source database, and can own self-hosted operations. Its administration UI, Prometheus monitoring, and language options help teams fit it into an existing stack. Teams seeking a managed service, or needing more than one Canal instance in a default Docker instance, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Apache-2.0 and a free plan avoid software charges for self-hosted use.
Pros: Kafka and RocketMQ delivery, additional queue server modes, and a ClickHouse adapter provide several downstream routes.
Pros: Canal Admin, Prometheus monitoring, and clients for four languages support operational and application integration.
Cons: Self-hosting puts deployment and operations on the adopting team.
Cons: The default Docker setup allows only one Canal instance per Docker instance, limiting that deployment shape.
Cons: Supported source-version lists and newer release adaptations differ, so teams should verify fit for their precise database version.

Alternatives

Choose Feast instead when you want an open-source feature store rather than MySQL binlog capture; it is free and self-hostable. Feathr is another free, self-hosted option, though its listed summary does not describe its feature set. Hopsworks Feature Store suits teams seeking a feature store with a free plan covering one project, Feature Store, Model Registry, and community support; its Enterprise plan uses custom pricing.

OpenMLDB is a closer fit for teams seeking an open-source machine-learning database with standalone and cluster versions, rather than Canal's binlog capture. Snowflake Feature Store is a paid, consumption-billed alternative for API and web use. Chalk is another paid API and self-hosted option. Databricks Feature Store has usage-based monthly billing and a free trial. Amazon SageMaker Autopilot is a paid alternative with a free trial and pay-as-you-go pricing.

Verdict

Choose Canal if your team needs self-hosted MySQL binlog capture, its destinations and clients match your stack, and you can run the service. The clearest reason to choose it is free, open-source access to incremental change records; look elsewhere if you need managed operations or the default Docker instance limit does not fit your deployment.
