Overview

Carbon brings together design foundations, components, patterns, code, and documentation shaped by the IBM Design Language. Commercial use is permitted, so organizations can adopt a common system without licensing fees. Its breadth supports work across areas such as data and AI, security, IT automation, and finance and operations, though adopting the whole ecosystem may involve more decisions than a team seeking only a small component set needs.

The system is organized in layers. Carbon Core supplies the shared foundations, while Carbon for Products adds product-focused components, styling, and guidance built with React. Other extensions address AI, charts, cloud, AEM, Salesforce, IBMer Experience, and React Native. This makes Carbon adaptable across different product needs, but the React basis of Carbon for Products matters to teams whose frontend stack differs.

Key features

Design assets and implementation

Carbon Core combines reusable components with patterns, guidance, and code. Components target specific interface problems and are designed to work together. Patterns bring components and design considerations together around user needs; some include example code. Because patterns can be implemented in many ways, Carbon does not supply code for every scenario. Teams with custom workflows should treat patterns as guidance rather than complete, ready-made implementations.

Design kits are maintained in Figma and receive library updates automatically, helping design teams keep their assets aligned with the system. Developer resources include GitHub repositories, Storybooks, tutorials, Carbon Devtools, a color-contrast checker, and Carbon UI Builder. The builder can export assembled pages as presentation images, live demo apps, or production-quality frontend code, giving teams a route from composition to implementation.

Accessibility, charts, and AI

Carbon components follow the IBM Accessibility Checklist, based on WCAG AA, Section 508, and European standards. Its stable-component checklist also calls for at least 80% unit-test coverage and accessibility checks with the IBM Equal Access Accessibility Checker. That gives teams concrete quality expectations, while still leaving them responsible for accessibility in their own implementations.

Carbon Charts covers visualizations from bar and line charts to alluvial diagrams and geospatial overlays, with an emphasis on accurate, accessible data presentation. Carbon for AI adds guidelines, style elements, tokens, and reusable pieces such as an AI label and chat framework. Carbon MCP lets AI applications or agents query colors, typography, component details, usage guidelines, and related context, making system knowledge accessible to AI-assisted workflows.

Framework options

Carbon for Products components use React. For teams using other web frameworks, the @carbon/web-components package offers ES-module or CDN components and can be used with frameworks such as Angular or Ember. That provides an alternative integration path, although teams should distinguish it from the React-based product layer when choosing components.

Pricing

Carbon’s Open-source design system plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It is open source for anyone to use and contribute to, with no paid tiers stated. Commercial license scope means the free plan can suit both individual builders and organizations standardizing product work without a subscription charge. The model does not impose a paid-plan distinction, though teams still need to account for their own implementation and maintenance work.

Platforms

Carbon is listed for web. Its web components can integrate with frameworks including Angular and Ember, while Carbon for Products is built with React. The wider ecosystem also includes React Native and integrations for cloud, AEM, Salesforce, and IBMer Experience.

Who it's for

Carbon fits teams that want design and engineering to work from shared assets, implementation guidance, and accessibility practices. It is particularly relevant to organizations building enterprise digital experiences across multiple domains, or to teams that can benefit from its charting and AI-specific resources. Teams wanting a ready-coded solution for every user flow, or a product component layer without React, should weigh the pattern coverage and framework boundaries before adopting it.

Support includes Support and Office Hours, and questions can be sent to carbon@us.ibm.com. This gives teams a route to seek assistance alongside the community-oriented open-source system.

Pros and cons

Pros: The free, commercially usable system combines design kits, code, guidance, and components, supporting a shared workflow without licensing cost.
Pros: Accessibility guidance is paired with checklist-based component quality expectations, making accessibility part of the system’s stated engineering discipline.
Pros: Figma updates, charting, AI resources, and framework integrations extend Carbon beyond a basic component collection.
Cons: Patterns do not include code for every scenario, so teams with specialized flows must supply their own implementation.
Cons: Carbon for Products is React-based, which may not align with teams committed to another frontend framework.
Cons: The number of extensions and tools creates selection work for teams that only need a narrow UI kit.

Alternatives

For a dedicated collection of interface kits or a broader directory of design-system products, browse UI Kit Libraries or Design System Software.

Untitled UI is worth considering when a team wants free React components and a separate Figma option; its free React plan includes open-source components for commercial use, while the free Figma plan is single-user with basic styles and components.

Clarity Design System is another free, MIT-licensed web design system for teams comparing open-source options.

Material Design for Bootstrap may suit teams seeking self-hosted or web options and a free MIT-licensed core for personal and commercial use.

Shadcn Studio Figma UI Kit offers a free community tier with limited resources and community support, with a one-time Basic plan for teams that need more.

UI Prep Design System has a free demo with fewer components, variables, and styles, but unlimited editors and projects; it may fit teams evaluating that narrower starting set.

GOV.UK Design System is a free, MIT-licensed option with publicly available code for teams whose work calls for that system.

Adobe Spectrum is an alternative listed across Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows.

Figma Simple Design System is another free web option.

Verdict

Choose Carbon if your team wants a commercially usable, no-cost system that connects design assets, code, accessibility guidance, charts, and AI-specific resources. Its breadth is the main reason to adopt it; the need to adapt uncovered patterns and the React foundation of Carbon for Products are the strongest reasons to look elsewhere.
