Overview

CarbonTool brings measurement, reporting and decarbonisation planning into one platform. A shared data backbone supports CSRD, VSME, GRI, CDP and ISSB reporting, while teams can track subsidiaries, sites or business units separately and consolidate them into a group inventory. That breadth is useful when reporting spans organizational boundaries, but a single-entity business with limited reporting needs may not benefit from the additional structure.

Each data point retains its source, unit, emission factor, quality level and audit trail. This makes figures easier to trace during review. Reduction targets and scenario planning add a path from accounting to action, with scenarios compared by impact, cost and return.

Key features

Measurement and data collection

More than 200 emission-source templates include methodology, units and emission factors, and the platform names DEFRA, EPA, ecoinvent and ADEME among its factor databases. Data can be entered manually or brought in through Excel or CSV, AI uploads, API connections and SAF-T import. The range can serve both spreadsheet-based collection and connected workflows; teams still need to choose and maintain appropriate inputs for their activity data.

The source and factor attached to each data point provide useful provenance, rather than leaving reviewers with unexplained totals. CarbonTool also supports supplier engagement, which is relevant to companies working on supply-chain emissions.

Reporting and reduction planning

The same data backbone supports five named reporting frameworks, reducing the need to treat each framework as an entirely separate data exercise. Paid plans include full Scope 3 coverage across the 15 GHG Protocol categories; Starter covers only Scopes 1 and 2. That distinction makes Starter unsuitable for a complete value-chain inventory.

Scenario planning compares reduction options by impact, cost and return. This gives teams a way to weigh targets against practical trade-offs, though the platform's value depends on having usable emissions data to inform those comparisons.

Integrations, hosting and support

CarbonTool offers API connections and says customers can connect systems through an API or MCP; MCP server access is on request. It is built and hosted in the EU, with emissions data kept on EU infrastructure under EU data protection law. Monthly support rises by plan, from two hours on Core to four on Pro and six hours plus priority on Enterprise.

Pricing

CarbonTool has a free Starter and three paid annual plans. The paid plans include full Scope 3 coverage; Starter does not.

Plan	Price	What it includes	Best fit
Starter	0.00 USD per free; 30 days	30 days of full access, core Scope 1 and 2 measurement, no credit card required	Teams assessing the platform or beginning a limited-scope inventory
Core	2,000€/ year	Single-entity measurement, full platform access and two hours of monthly support	Single-entity companies
Pro	5,000€/ year	Multi-unit tracking and consolidation, VSME reporting and four hours of monthly support	SMEs with multiple entities or supply-chain focus
Enterprise	7,500€/ year	Multi-unit support, CSRD reporting, six hours of monthly support and priority support	Large organizations with CSRD obligations

The 30-day Starter trial requires no card and does not auto-charge. Trial data is retained for 90 days after access lapses. Core is the lower-cost paid entry for a single entity, but does not include the multi-unit and consolidation positioning of Pro. Pro adds those capabilities and VSME reporting; Enterprise is the plan aimed at large CSRD-obligated organizations and adds priority support. The annual prices make the paid tiers a considered commitment rather than a casual extension of the free trial.

Platforms

CarbonTool is offered on the web and through an API. Its API and MCP connection options suit teams looking to connect emissions data with existing systems, although MCP server access is on request.

Who it's for

CarbonTool is a strong fit for companies that need a traceable emissions inventory, reporting across recognized frameworks, or consolidation across subsidiaries and sites. Pro is the clearest match for SMEs with several entities or supply-chain priorities; Enterprise targets large organizations with CSRD obligations. A single-entity company can start with Core, while a team that only needs a short Scope 1 and 2 assessment can use Starter. Organizations needing full Scope 3 coverage should plan for a paid tier.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad framework support across CSRD, VSME, GRI, CDP and ISSB gives reporting teams one stated data backbone to work from.
Pros: More than 200 templates, four named factor databases and multiple import routes give teams several ways to structure and collect activity data.
Pros: Per-point provenance and a recorded audit trail support review of reported figures.
Pros: Multi-entity consolidation and scenario comparisons connect organizational accounting with reduction planning.
Cons: Starter excludes Scope 3 and lasts only 30 days, so it is not a lasting free option for a full inventory.
Cons: Full Scope 3 coverage requires a paid plan, with the entry paid tier priced at 2,000€/ year.
Cons: MCP server access is on request, making it less direct for teams that specifically want that connection available without a request.

Alternatives

Carbonfact is worth considering when supplier-controlled environmental-data exchange or free LCA verification is the priority; its Product LCA plan has no published price. For a freemium option with a free plan covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 tracking, Greenio offers unlimited data entry and four PDF reports per year, while its Growth plan is priced at 2,999 INR per month.

Persefoni may suit a single-user starting point: its free Pro plan includes unlimited assets and historical reporting years, with some GHG Metrics Reports and Concierge Support paid. CO2 AI offers an enterprise platform with pricing on request and a free 30-day trial. Plan A is another paid alternative, with an Essential plan for measurement, reporting, reduction targets and streamlined data collection.

CarbonAnalytics may appeal to smaller teams seeking a stated entry price: Starter costs 69.99 GBP per month per business unit and includes up to 300 suppliers, one report framework and up to three users. BigMile is a paid alternative with a Premium plan that includes five million records and API upload. CarbonChain is another paid option, with its subscription fee set out in the customer’s Order Form and/or Statement of Work. Browse more options in Carbon Accounting Software.

Verdict

CarbonTool is a good choice for teams that need credible emissions-data traceability, framework reporting and multi-entity consolidation in one platform. Its breadth and EU hosting make it especially relevant to organizations with formal reporting needs; the main reason to look elsewhere is the paid-plan commitment required for full Scope 3 coverage, particularly if a team only needs basic accounting or a permanent free tier.
