Overview

The Legal preset is aimed at preserving the texture of legal speech: when clearly audible, it retains terminology, role references, fillers, hesitations, repetitions, and false starts. That makes drafts more useful for reviewing depositions, hearings, witness interviews, and client meetings than a transcript optimized only for readability. It is still working material for preparation, review, and internal notes, so legal teams must check it against the recording before relying on it.

Users can supply up to 100 case-specific names or terms per file to guide spelling. This is a practical aid when a matter includes unfamiliar people or terminology, though it cannot guarantee accurate recognition. AI summaries and translation extend the workflow beyond transcription, but they do not replace transcript review.

Key features

Speaker labels and timestamps: WhisperAI detects speakers, adds timestamps throughout, and supports role labels such as Counsel, Witness, or Judge. These controls make it easier to navigate a recording and attribute statements during review; users should still verify speaker attribution against the audio.
File handling and exports: Uploads can be up to 5 GB, and transcripts can be exported as PDF, DOCX, TXT, SRT, or VTT. The broad format range helps teams move transcripts into document and caption workflows without being locked to one output type.
Connected workflows: The MCP connector works with Claude and ChatGPT on every plan. Google Drive Cloud Sync can automatically transcribe new files in selected folders, which suits teams that already use Drive as an intake point. OneDrive, Dropbox, and Box support is described as coming soon, so those cloud workflows are not a current fit.
Security and data control: Data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.3 and at rest with AES-256. The security program is SOC 2-aligned, not SOC 2 certified. OpenAI processes content under a DPA, and customer content is not used for model training; users can delete recordings, transcripts, or their account. Organizations that require SOC 2 certification should look elsewhere.
Support: Help is available by email and through the Help Center, with typical email replies within one business day.

Pricing

WhisperAI uses a freemium model, with paid plans starting at 14.99 USD per month. The free plan offers 5 minutes per month, a 5 GB maximum file size, and basic speaker labels. That is enough to evaluate a short recording, but the small monthly quota makes it unsuitable for ongoing legal work.

Premium — 14.99 USD per month: Includes 120 minutes per month, 5 GB maximum file size, up to five files at a time, and basic speaker labels. It suits an individual with occasional transcription needs; the minute quota is the trade-off for the entry price.
Business Pro — 24.99 USD per month: Includes unlimited transcription, a 5 GB maximum file size, and up to 10 files at a time. This is the more practical choice for regular transcription when a larger batch limit matters, though the plan details do not specify included seats.
Enterprise — 75.00 USD per month: Includes five seats and unlimited transcription per seat; additional seats cost 15 USD per seat per month. It is the clearest fit for a small team that needs multiple accounts and uncapped usage.
Developer API — 99.00 USD per month: Includes 10,000 minutes, a 5 GB maximum file size, and overage at 0.006 USD per minute. This plan is aimed at builders integrating transcription into their own systems; its fixed monthly allowance and overage rate matter when estimating variable workloads.

Platforms

WhisperAI is available through an API, browser extension, iOS app, and web app. That mix gives teams options for integrating transcription or working directly in a browser or on mobile, rather than requiring a single desktop environment.

Who it's for

WhisperAI is best suited to legal professionals who need searchable drafts with legal terminology, role labels, timestamps, and flexible exports. It can also suit developers who want an API allowance or teams that use Google Drive for file intake. It is a weaker fit for practices that require certified final transcripts, SOC 2 certification, or cloud sync with OneDrive, Dropbox, or Box today.

Pros and cons

Pros: The Legal preset retains important features of spoken testimony, and up to 100 case-specific terms per file can guide spelling.
Pros: Role labels, timestamps, and five export formats support detailed review and downstream document workflows.
Pros: The free tier and several paid structures let occasional users, teams, and API builders choose different usage levels.
Cons: Transcripts are not certified court records, limiting their use to preparation and review rather than a certified record.
Cons: The security program is SOC 2-aligned rather than certified, which may rule it out for organizations with certification requirements.
Cons: Free use is capped at five minutes per month, while Premium's 120-minute allowance can constrain frequent users.

Verdict

Its affordable entry plan and API option broaden its appeal, but certified records and SOC 2 certification are reasons to choose another service.
