Overview

Ceph is open-source software for building distributed storage across object, block, and file workloads. It is a strong fit for infrastructure teams that can provision and operate their own cluster, rather than organizations seeking storage without cluster management.

Founded in 2006, Ceph is stewarded by the Ceph Foundation under the Linux Foundation. Most of the software is dual-licensed under LGPL 2.1 or 3.0; some bundled components use other free software licenses.

Key features

Ceph brings several storage types into one system, which can simplify the infrastructure choice for teams serving different workloads. That breadth comes with the responsibility to select, manage, and maintain the underlying commodity hardware.

Object storage: RGW supports the S3 API and Swift-compatible applications. Versioning, lifecycle rules, immutability, and cross-region replication give teams established interfaces and useful data controls without limiting the system to a single storage workload.
Block storage: RBD provides thin-provisioned disk images, snapshots, writable clones, and asynchronous mirroring to remote Ceph clusters. Integrations include Kubernetes, QEMU, libvirt, OpenStack, Nomad, and CloudStack. This suits varied virtualization and orchestration environments, but block storage requires a running Ceph cluster.
File storage: CephFS is a POSIX-compliant distributed filesystem with snapshots, quotas, and multi-cluster mirroring. Its metadata servers can scale to support higher-throughput workloads, making it relevant to teams that need shared file storage as part of a broader Ceph deployment.
Cluster resilience: Ceph can replicate data across devices, racks, and geographic locations, then redistribute it after hardware or connectivity failures. This supports fault-tolerant designs, though the organization remains responsible for the cluster and its hardware.
Kubernetes: The project recommends Rook to run Ceph in Kubernetes or connect an existing cluster. The Ceph CSI driver provisions block and file volumes, a useful route for Kubernetes teams that want Ceph storage integrated with their environment.

Pricing

Ceph is free and open source, with the Ceph plan priced at 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because the software itself is free. The plan is the software, not a managed cluster: teams choose and manage the commodity hardware, and block storage needs a running Ceph cluster.

The lack of a software charge makes Ceph accessible to organizations prepared to take on deployment and operations. Production guidance calls for at least three monitors, two managers, and three OSDs, with at least 10 Gb/s networking between hosts, so the practical commitment includes a multi-host footprint and suitable network capacity.

Platforms

Ceph supports Linux, Windows, API access, and self-hosted deployment. The project provides packages, container images, source clones, and tarballs. For cephadm, deployments require Python 3, systemd, and Podman or Docker; teams should account for those prerequisites when fitting Ceph into an existing stack.

Release planning is relatively clear: Ceph ships a stable release each year, supports each release series for approximately 24 months, and publishes point releases every 4 to 6 weeks. Support routes include documentation, the ceph-users mailing list, community channels, and the bug tracker. Suspected security vulnerabilities should be sent to the project's closed security mailing list at security@ceph.io.

Who it's for

Ceph is aimed at teams that need storage infrastructure they control: businesses, cloud providers, SMEs, global organizations, academic and research institutions, startups, and developers. It is especially compelling where object, block, and file storage need to coexist, or where Kubernetes and virtualization integrations matter. It is a weaker fit for teams without the people or hardware to operate a distributed cluster.

Pros and cons

Pro: One system covers object, block, and file storage, reducing the need to select separate products for each workload.
Pro: S3 and Swift compatibility, plus versioning, lifecycle rules, immutability, and cross-region replication, suit applications built around familiar object-storage interfaces.
Pro: RBD and CephFS provide snapshots and mirroring, while Ceph can redistribute data after failures.
Con: Organizations must run the cluster on hardware they choose and manage; free software does not remove the operational burden.
Con: Production guidance calls for multiple monitors, managers, and OSDs, plus at least 10 Gb/s networking between hosts, which can be a substantial infrastructure commitment.
Con: cephadm's Python 3, systemd, and container-runtime requirements may constrain deployment choices.

Alternatives

Consider BeeGFS if you want a free plan and trial on Linux, API, or self-hosted platforms. MinIO AIStor offers a free single-node plan with a full feature set, but redistribution is prohibited; it is a more focused option if that deployment shape fits. Quobyte has a free edition capped at 150 TB, while TrueNAS offers a free download for x86 hardware with community support. openmediavault is another free Linux and self-hosted option under GNU GPL v3.

For paid alternatives, Hitachi Universal Volume Manager requires a license on the local storage system. SUSE Multi-Linux Manager has subscription options with pricing by request, while Komprise Intelligent Data Management offers a free trial and documents subscription capacity in the customer quote.

See Storage Management Software, Software-Defined Storage Software, and Distributed File System Software for more options in adjacent categories.

Verdict

Choose Ceph if your team needs object, block, and file storage in one system and has the hardware and operational capacity to run a distributed cluster. Its breadth, resilience options, and Kubernetes integrations are substantial advantages. Look elsewhere if you need managed storage or cannot commit to the cluster footprint and ongoing administration.
