Overview

InSpec turns security, compliance, and policy requirements into executable rules, then compares them with the actual state of systems. That makes it a practical fit for teams that want audits to sit alongside infrastructure work rather than remain a separate manual process. Its hybrid deployment model and ability to target local systems, cloud services, and Linux in Docker containers support varied environments.

It is less compelling for buyers seeking a turnkey compliance service: the core workflow is expressed in code, and Chef InSpec 7 requires EULA acceptance. Whether a license key is needed depends on the distribution source.

Key features

Reusable profiles and controls

Profiles bundle controls into artifacts that teams can version and give platform requirements and dependencies. This supports repeatable audits and shared policy sets, though it still asks teams to maintain checks as code.

Cloud coverage and extensibility

Resources cover AWS, Azure, AliCloud, and GCP, and users can build custom resources. That breadth helps teams with mixed cloud estates adapt assessments, while custom resources also mean some coverage may need engineering effort.

Targets, reporting, and integrations

Checks can run locally or against cloud services and infrastructure such as Linux in Docker containers. Results can be emitted as JSON, HTML, or plain text, or sent to Chef Automate. The kitchen-inspec verifier also runs profiles through Test Kitchen, a useful connection for teams already using that workflow.

Compliance and operations

Chef offers premium CIS- and STIG-based profiles for scanning enterprise assets. InSpec supports policy as code, CIS benchmarks, configuration-drift checks, automated remediation, agentless assessment, and cloud infrastructure assessment. The licensing telemetry service collects activation, usage, environment, and bug data for Free and Trial tiers, but is disabled for Commercial users.

Pricing

Chef InSpec uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, lasts indefinitely, and is limited to non-production workloads for personal and non-commercial use. It is suitable for individual exploration, but its usage terms rule it out for production or commercial deployment.

The Trial plan costs 0.00 USD per free for 30 days and permits non-production product evaluation. It gives teams a defined evaluation window, not an ongoing production entitlement. Both Free and Trial tiers receive community Slack support and have telemetry enabled.

Commercial pricing is custom pricing. The renewable plan covers production and non-production workloads, with entitlements based on the purchase order; contract support is listed for Commercial licenses, and telemetry is not enabled for commercial users. Buyers should confirm the applicable distribution and license-key requirements as part of procurement.

Platforms

InSpec supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows environments. Chef documents native installers for Windows and Linux distributions, plus Habitat packages for macOS, Windows, and Linux distributions. The combination suits teams with varied operating environments, although installation routes differ by platform.

Who it's for

InSpec is a strong fit for infrastructure and security teams that want to define, reuse, and run compliance controls across cloud and local targets, especially where Test Kitchen or Chef Automate is already part of the workflow. It is a weaker fit for users who need commercial production rights under a free plan, or who prefer compliance checks that do not require maintaining code.

Pros and cons

Reusable, versionable profiles: teams can manage controls with platform requirements and dependencies instead of rebuilding audits for each target.
Broad assessment targets: support for four cloud providers, local systems, and containerized Linux provides useful reach across mixed environments.
Flexible result handling: JSON, HTML, plain-text, and Chef Automate output offer different paths for review and integration.
Free use has tight boundaries: the unlimited-duration plan is for non-production personal and non-commercial workloads, while evaluation is limited to 30 days.
License and telemetry considerations: EULA acceptance is required for version 7, key needs vary by distribution, and telemetry is enabled on Free and Trial tiers.

Alternatives

Kubescape is worth considering for teams seeking a free, Apache 2.0-licensed, self-hosted CLI and Kubernetes operator across the same listed platform set.

Mondoo CSPM may suit teams looking for free-forever open-source tools spanning cloud, Kubernetes, OS, SaaS, and API scanning, with a Kubernetes operator and extensible provider system.

Steampipe is another free option for teams that value an open-source CLI that requires no database.

Prowler Cloud offers a 15-day free trial with no cloud-account limit and access to every check and compliance framework, a defined alternative for time-limited evaluation.

Qualys External Attack Surface Management has a 30-day no-cost CSAM with EASM offer for teams evaluating that product area.

Tanium Deploy, Prisma Cloud SCA, and CIS-CAT Pro Assessor are other options in the space.

Verdict

Choose Chef InSpec if your team wants policy and compliance checks maintained as reusable code across infrastructure targets, with reporting options and integrations that fit engineering workflows. Look elsewhere if you need production use without a commercial license or want to avoid the licensing and distribution checks that accompany deployment.
