Overview

Challonge gives tournament organizers tools to manage competition formats, registration, results and the surrounding event. It is best suited to esports and traditional sports organizers who want brackets and community features under one roof. The free Standard plan makes it easy to start, but its registration fee and participant cap can become meaningful constraints as an event grows.

Key features

More than 25 competition formats cover options from single and double elimination to round robin, Swiss and Grand Prix. That breadth helps organizers match the structure to the competition instead of settling for a basic bracket. One notable exception is single-stage Round Robin: it is limited to 40 participants on both plans, so larger events in that format need another solution or format.

Tournament pages can bring brackets, participants, standings, sponsor details, stations, discussions and score reporting together. This gives organizers a shared place for event information and results, rather than a bracket alone. Website embeds extend that page to an existing site; custom themes for embedded brackets require Premier.

Events support paid or unpaid tickets, registration fees, analytics and attendee check-in. Communities can host tournaments, events, contests and announcements, alongside stats and Elo rating leaderboards. These tools make Challonge a better fit for recurring competition groups than for organizers who only need to publish a one-off bracket.

The API lets applications create tournaments and report scores. Sandbox quotas are 500 requests per month on Standard and 2,000 on Premier. API plans are managed separately from Premier, so buying Premier does not itself determine an application's API plan; paid API plans have a $7/month discount. Team management, payment collection and live scoreboards are also supported.

Pricing

Standard is 0.00 USD per free. It includes unlimited tournaments, events and communities, up to 256 participants per tournament, and paid registration through Stripe with a $0.75/order Challonge fee. Ads are the trade-off, and the per-order charge makes Standard less attractive when collecting registration payments at scale. The 40-participant ceiling for single-stage Round Robin applies even below the general tournament cap.

Premier costs 83.88 USD per year (billed $83.88 per year, equivalent to $6.99/month billed annually). It removes ads and the Challonge registration fee, raises the general participant limit to 512 per tournament, allows match file uploads up to 25mb, adds priority support and includes one free Pro Community License. Premier is the more practical choice for organizers who need those higher limits or collect paid registrations often enough for the fee waiver to matter. It does not remove the 40-person Round Robin limit.

API plans are separate from the tournament plans. Consider the Sandbox quotas when an application will create tournaments or report scores, and do not treat Premier as a substitute for choosing an API plan.

Platforms

Challonge is available on web and through an API. The web platform suits organizers managing competitions directly; the API supports applications that need to create tournaments or report scores.

Who it's for

Challonge suits casual or professional organizers of esports and traditional sports, especially those running multiple events or cultivating a community around competition. Standard is a sensible starting point for smaller tournaments that can accept ads and the registration charge. Premier is better suited to organizers needing higher participant capacity, custom embedded bracket themes, priority support or fee-free paid registration. Teams requiring compliance with industry-specific rules should look elsewhere: the terms say Challonge is not tailored to regulations such as HIPAA or FISMA.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 25 formats and tournament pages with standings, score reporting and event details support a wider range of competitions than a bracket-only workflow.
Pros: Events and communities add registration, check-in, analytics, contests and Elo leaderboards, which can support a continuing competition program.
Pros: The free plan includes unlimited tournaments, events and communities, making it possible to run multiple competitions without a subscription.
Cons: Standard charges $0.75/order for paid registrations, while Premier costs 83.88 USD per year to remove the Challonge fee.
Cons: The 40-participant cap for single-stage Round Robin applies on both plans, and even Premier caps other tournaments at 512 participants.
Cons: The compliance limitation rules it out for organizations that need a service tailored to industry-specific requirements such as HIPAA or FISMA.

Alternatives

Browse Game Tournament Software for a broader set of tournament tools. Choose Tourney Bot if its free plan's three tournaments per month and eight-participant limit fit a smaller schedule, or if its stated formats and priority support suit the use case. Bracket is the alternative to consider when free, open-source tournament management software and self-hosting matter more than Challonge's hosted event and community structure.

Challengermode offers a Developers plan with flexible, tailored pricing for teams seeking that option. Skillz is a free-to-join player platform with free tournaments and cash tournaments from $0.60 to enter, rather than a direct choice for organizers seeking Challonge's range of event tools. Xtallet is worth considering for a free web plan limited to one active tournament and 100 teams, with a watermark on exports.

LeagueCircuit is a free, open-source option for teams that prefer self-hosted software. PlayVS may fit school programs seeking a platform-wide annual plan; its stated Middle School Competition early-bird price is 395.00 USD per year. School Esports is another school-oriented option, with a League platform plan priced at US$499 one-time setup followed by free access for life and a 15% share on entry fees.

Verdict

Choose Challonge if you organize recurring esports or traditional sports competitions and want formats, registration, event management and community features connected to a public-facing tournament hub. Its free plan and broad format support are compelling starting points; look elsewhere if your event exceeds its participant limits, the Standard registration charge is unsuited to your economics, or you need compliance tailored to regulated industries.
