Overview

Checkmk brings server, service, VM, network and cloud monitoring into one platform. Native agents, agentless checks and API-based collection let teams choose an approach by system rather than forcing one monitoring method across the stack. More than 2,000 smart checks, automatic discovery and network mapping cover web, mail and database servers, giving operators useful breadth for varied infrastructure.

It can run on customer hardware or in virtualized environments, with packages for major Linux distributions, Docker and a Virtual Appliance. One instance can monitor thousands of servers, and distributed monitoring adds horizontal scale. That makes the architecture suitable for larger estates, though the free Community plan is intended for smaller infrastructures and scales to approximately 100 hosts.

Key features

Flexible collection: Native agents support Windows, Linux and other operating systems; SNMP and TCP/UDP checks work without agents, while API-based checks use HTTP/XML, SSH or TELNET. This is valuable when a stack includes systems where agent installation is impractical, but it also means teams must decide which collection method fits each target.
Cloud visibility: AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform monitoring includes automatic component detection and Quick Setup, reducing the work of bringing cloud resources into the monitoring scope.
Integrations and automation: Community includes more than 2,000 built-in integrations and supports REST APIs and custom automation scripts. Teams can connect monitoring to their own operational workflows without giving up a large base of ready-made checks.
Secure remote monitoring: Ultimate offers zero-inbound, fully encrypted monitoring using push agents and Checkmk Relay. That is a meaningful option for environments where inbound access is a constraint, though it is tied to the top edition.

Pricing

Checkmk uses a freemium model, with a free plan, paid tiers and a 30-day trial. The pricing note gives paid service from €190/mo (annual), while plan prices below are quoted in USD and have their own billing terms.

Community: 0.00 USD per free, forever. It includes 2,000+ pre-built integrations, community support and capacity for up to approximately 100 hosts. It is a sensible fit for smaller environments or teams validating the platform, but the host ceiling and community-only support narrow its appeal for production estates that need vendor assistance.
Synthetic Monitoring: 0.00 USD per month, billed annually, at $0.00/test with 3 free tests; available with Pro and Ultimate. It is an add-on option for teams on those plans, not a standalone substitute for infrastructure monitoring.
Pro: 275.00 USD per month, billed annually, from $275/month. It is priced as low as ~$2.75/host per month and equates to ~3,000 services; 8h x 5d professional support is included. This is the practical step up for teams exceeding Community’s intended scale or needing defined support coverage.
Cloud: 290.00 USD per month with monthly billing. At ~$8.70/host per month, with 1 host = ~30 services, it covers 1K–50K services and states 99.5% availability. The monthly term may suit teams preferring monthly billing, while the service-based range and higher per-host figure make it important to match expected monitoring volume to the plan.
Ultimate: 400.00 USD per month, billed annually, from $400/month; as low as ~$4.00/host per month and equivalent to ~3,000 services. It includes 10h x 5d professional support, upgradeable to 24h x 5d, plus the zero-inbound encrypted monitoring architecture. It is the strongest fit for teams that need those security and support options, but costs more than Pro.

The tiers are not directly interchangeable on price alone: Cloud is expressed in services and monthly billing, while Pro and Ultimate use annual billing and give host-equivalent pricing alongside service capacity. Teams should weigh capacity, billing term and support coverage together.

Platforms

Checkmk spans API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows platforms. It supports a hybrid deployment model and multiple operating systems, with both agentless monitoring and native agents. That combination suits heterogeneous stacks, especially where some systems cannot or should not run an agent.

Who it's for

Checkmk is best suited to infrastructure and operations teams responsible for a mix of data-center, cloud, network and container workloads. Smaller teams can start with Community, while distributed monitoring and paid editions support larger deployments. It is less compelling for organizations that need professional support but want to stay on the free plan, or for teams whose requirements are narrowly focused on a single monitoring domain.

Pros and cons

Pro — broad collection choices: agents, SNMP, TCP/UDP and API-based checks cover varied systems without requiring one approach everywhere.
Pro — substantial built-in coverage: more than 2,000 checks and integrations, automatic discovery and cloud setup offer a strong starting point for mixed infrastructure.
Pro — scale beyond one instance: thousands of servers per instance and distributed monitoring support larger environments.
Pro — choice of deployment and support: self-hosted and virtualized options pair with paid support windows up to an upgradeable 24h x 5d on Ultimate.
Con — Community has a clear scale boundary: approximately 100 hosts and community support make it unsuitable as a no-cost answer for larger teams needing vendor support.
Con — paid tiers use different capacity and billing frames: Cloud’s service range and monthly term differ from the annual Pro and Ultimate plans, so a simple plan-to-plan price comparison can mislead.

Alternatives

For a smaller node- or service-capped free deployment, Nagios XI offers a free tier capped at 7 Nodes or 100 Services, whichever comes first, with most Standard features and self-support. VictoriaMetrics is another freemium option, with open-source single-node and cluster versions. Zabbix is a freemium alternative for teams considering a different free monitoring platform.

Robusta is a paid option whose core is open source. Sysdig Monitor is a paid alternative with host-based or time series-based licensing and tailored pricing. Atatus API Analytics is paid, has no free plan and offers custom pricing based on infrastructure size, data volume and monitoring needs, with a 14-day trial and no credit card needed. MetricFire is a paid alternative with an annual Intro plan at 16.00 USD per month, including 500 Metrics, 6 Month Retention, 30s Resolution, 2 Team Users, 10 Alerts and Unlimited Dashboards. For teams comparing hosted application observability, Grafana Cloud Application Observability has a free tier with 2,232 host hours and a Pro plan priced at $0.025 per host hour with a $19 monthly platform fee.

Checkmk also sits across several monitoring categories, including Cloud Monitoring, Infrastructure Monitoring, Network Performance Monitoring Software, Hardware Monitoring Software, Managed Service Provider Software and Container Monitoring.

Verdict

Choose Checkmk if your team needs one monitoring platform across heterogeneous infrastructure and values a choice of deployment, collection method and scale path. Its broad checks, cloud coverage and distributed architecture are the main reasons to shortlist it. Look elsewhere if Community’s approximate 100-host scope is too small and paid support or higher tiers do not fit your budget or capacity needs.
