Overview

Chordbot is a mobile songwriting app for building chord progressions and shaping them into backing tracks. It is best suited to songwriters who want to explore harmony and arrangement on a phone or tablet, rather than record a complete song inside one app. Its range of chord and accompaniment choices is useful, but the free version cannot save or export work.

Key features

A library of more than 60 chord types, available in all inversions, gives users room to explore beyond basic triads. An automatic or manual inversion selector can smooth transitions between chords, making it useful when the movement between harmonies matters as much as the progression itself. Song-O-Matic can generate progressions when a starting idea is hard to find, though the app’s core focus remains chords and backing arrangements, not melody or lyrics.

More than 70 comping presets offer quick starting points, while combining over 400 instrument tracks allows users to make their own styles. Repeatable song sections can each use a different comping style or arrangement, which makes Chordbot a practical sketchpad for developing the shape of a backing track. It is not positioned as a full recording environment: demo recording is supported, but the central workflow is progression and arrangement creation.

Export to MIDI gives users a route into a DAW for further editing, while WAV is available for sharing. The tradeoff is that Chordbot only imports its own JSON song files; MIDI and WAV exports cannot be brought back as editable Chordbot projects. JSON files can be shared through email, iCloud Files, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive. The maker grants a perpetual, non-exclusive, royalty-free license for using creations in commercial recordings and performances.

Pricing

Chordbot Lite is free at 0.00 USD per free. It provides a way to try the workflow, but saving and exporting are disabled, so it is not a workable choice for keeping or moving finished ideas out of the app.

Chordbot Pro costs 4.99 USD per once. The paid app enables saving and exporting, making it the practical option for anyone who wants to retain song files, send MIDI to a DAW, or share WAVs. This is a one-time price rather than a monthly subscription. There is no free trial, so Lite is the available way to assess the app before buying.

Platforms

Chordbot is available on Android and iOS. App licenses cannot practically be transferred between Google Play and Apple's App Store, so users switching platforms need to buy another copy. The developer is Contrasonic AB, based in Järvsö, Sweden. Support questions and problems can be sent to support@chordbot.com.

Who it's for

Chordbot fits songwriters, guitarists and other musicians who want to experiment with chord combinations, make a backing track for a solo, or test arrangements before moving work into a DAW. It is a stronger fit for mobile harmony and accompaniment sketching than for lyric writing or melody development, which it does not provide. Teams that need to collaborate can consider its collaboration support, but the app’s JSON-only import path limits workflows that depend on exchanging MIDI or WAV projects back into Chordbot.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad chord library and inversion controls support more deliberate harmonic movement.
Pros: Presets, custom combinations from over 400 instrument tracks, and repeatable sections make it possible to vary arrangements without leaving the app.
Pros: MIDI and WAV export, plus commercial-use rights, make finished ideas usable beyond personal sketches.
Cons: Lite disables both saving and exporting, leaving the free version limited to trying the workflow.
Cons: MIDI and WAV cannot be re-imported into Chordbot, so those exports are a one-way handoff.
Cons: Buying on one mobile store does not cover the other platform, which matters to users who switch between Android and iOS.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Songwriting Software.

Choose Suno instead if a freemium Android or iOS option with daily credits and audio uploads better suits the workflow. Hookpad is a web-based alternative with chords and melody, smart guides and unlimited cloud save on its free plan; advanced features are limited to one-minute previews there. Nitesong offers web-based notation editors and a free allowance of three songs.

Song Cage is worth considering for its wider platform coverage, including desktop and web, and a free web app limited to one song. Songkeeper Studio is another mobile option, with a free Basic plan capped at five songs, two drafts per song and two recordings per song. SongSmith.io is a web alternative whose free plan supports up to five songs and includes writing, collaboration and reference tools.

SONGTAKE may suit users looking for an iOS or macOS option with a paid Studio Access plan that includes 1TB storage and 16 tracks per song. Songzap is another iOS and macOS choice; its free plan includes four-track recording, audio bounce and import, an arrangement editor and an AI Beats Designer.

Verdict

Choose Chordbot if you want a focused mobile tool for developing chord progressions and shaping them into backing tracks, with MIDI and WAV export available for a modest one-time purchase. Look elsewhere if you need a free app that saves work, a melody or lyric-writing workspace, or a project format that lets exported MIDI and WAV return to the app for continued editing.
