Overview

PayWhirl is subscription billing software for merchants selling recurring services and one-time offers. It is a strong fit when a business needs multiple billing models and flexible ways to connect billing to a storefront or custom site. Its main cost trade-off is a PayWhirl transaction fee on top of gateway or processor charges.

Recurring plans, installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, manual subscriptions, and one-time payments give merchants room to structure varied offers. Scheduled charges, invoices, emails, retries, and dunning are automated, while subscribers can manage payment methods, billing details, and subscription changes in a self-service portal, subject to merchant settings. Reporting covers MRR and ARR, customer lifetime value, churn, payment schedules, geography, and growth forecasts.

Merchants can connect through embeddable widgets, hosted payment links, API access, webhooks, or custom scripts. PayWhirl lists integrations with Shopify, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, Stripe, Square, PayPal, Authorize.Net, Braintree, ShipStation, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and Zapier. It supports more than 10 gateways and major credit and debit cards in over 100 currencies, subject to gateway capabilities.

PayWhirl says card numbers and verification codes are intended to pass directly to payment providers rather than its servers, and it maintains PCI-related controls appropriate to its role and system scope. Its data protection addendum says it processes merchant subscriber data without selling it or using it for unrelated advertising or profiling.

Key features

Billing and recovery

The range of supported offers makes PayWhirl useful beyond straightforward monthly subscriptions: merchants can also bill installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, and manually managed subscriptions. Automated retries and dunning help handle failed recurring payments, and payment recovery is among its supported capabilities. This breadth is useful for varied business models, though merchants should account for transaction charges on top of processor fees.

Subscriber control and reporting

The portal gives subscribers a way to update payment and billing details and make subscription changes without routing every request through staff. Merchant settings govern what customers can change, so the portal is not an unconditional transfer of control. MRR and ARR, lifetime value, churn, geographic reporting, a payment calendar, and growth forecasting give merchants several views of subscription performance.

Integration and payments

Widgets and hosted links suit merchants who want to add payment flows without building every step; API access, webhooks, and custom scripts offer options for more tailored connections. The listed storefront, payment, shipping, analytics, and automation integrations make the product adaptable across existing stacks. Gateway capabilities determine which currencies and payment options a merchant can use.

Pricing

PayWhirl has a free plan and paid plans from $9 /mo. Paid plans include a 14-day free trial with the full application available during the trial. Every plan's transaction fee is additional to payment gateway or processor fees, so the monthly price alone does not capture billing cost.

Plan	Price	PayWhirl transaction fee	What to weigh
Starter	$0 /mo	3.0% per transaction	Free entry point; gateway processing fees still apply.
Free	$0 /mo	3%	Includes the Shopify app; standard processor fees still apply.
Pro	$9 /mo	2%	Includes the Shopify app; processor fees still apply.
Traction	$29 /mo	1.5%	Includes the Shopify app; processor fees still apply.
Business Pro	$49 /mo	2.0% per transaction	Gateway processing fees still apply.
Business Plus	$149 /mo	1.0% per transaction	Gateway processing fees still apply.
Scale	$149 /mo	0.75%	Includes the Shopify app; processor fees still apply.
Business Ultimate	$249 /mo	0.5% per transaction	Gateway processing fees still apply.
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Volume discounts	For businesses processing more than $5,000,000 per year; contact sales. Gateway processing fees still apply.

The free options keep monthly cost at $0 but carry the highest stated PayWhirl transaction rates, making them most suitable when validating a billing setup or keeping fixed costs down. Pro is the lowest paid entry at $9 /mo and reduces the stated rate to 2%; Traction at $29 /mo lowers it to 1.5%. For merchants focused on a lower stated transaction rate, Scale is $149 /mo at 0.75%, while Business Ultimate is $249 /mo at 0.5%. Business Pro's 2.0% rate is higher than Traction's 1.5% despite its $49 /mo price, so compare the plans against the workflow and integration fit rather than assuming every higher tier lowers the rate. Enterprise is aimed at very high annual processing volume and uses custom pricing.

Platforms

PayWhirl is available on the web and through an API. It is described for merchants using BigCommerce, custom websites, and a separate Shopify application, which makes it a plausible fit for teams that need billing to sit alongside an existing storefront rather than replace it.

Who it's for

PayWhirl suits merchants that need recurring billing plus payment plans or one-off offers, want customer self-service, and value several integration paths. It can also fit teams that need subscription reporting and automated payment follow-up without limiting offers to a single recurring format. It is less compelling for a merchant whose overriding priority is minimizing per-transaction charges, since PayWhirl's fees stack with payment processor costs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Supports recurring and one-time offers, including installments, retainers, pre-orders, and donations, so merchants can manage more than standard subscriptions.
Pro: Automated invoices, emails, retries, and dunning plus a configurable customer portal can reduce routine payment and account-management work.
Pro: Widgets, hosted links, API access, webhooks, custom scripts, and a broad integration list give merchants multiple ways to fit billing into an existing stack.
Con: PayWhirl transaction fees are charged in addition to gateway or processor fees, which can make the free plan costly as transaction volume grows.
Con: Portal actions depend on merchant settings, so subscribers may not be able to make every change themselves.

Alternatives

Verdict

Choose PayWhirl if your business needs several subscription and payment formats, payment automation, merchant reporting, and multiple routes into an existing storefront or custom site. The combination of billing flexibility and integration methods is its strongest case. Look elsewhere if stacked transaction and processor fees are incompatible with your margins, or if you need subscriber changes to be unrestricted by merchant settings.
