Overview

Kube-OVN combines a centralized control plane with VPCs, separate address spaces, and policy segmentation. Operators can manage subnets, static IP allocation, gateways, and hybrid underlay and overlay networks, then apply QoS, ACLs, and traffic mirroring. That makes it a more capable choice for network boundaries and controls than a basic connectivity layer, but teams should choose it for those needs rather than assume it replaces a broader platform stack.

The project reports production validation at thousands of nodes and hundreds of thousands of pods, a stated scale that may matter to large clusters. It runs on x86_64 and arm64 and is available for on-premises deployment. Its Apache-2.0 license and free plan remove a software price barrier; operating and integrating a centralized networking layer remains part of the deployment decision.

Key features

Tenant and traffic control

VPC networks with distinct address spaces give operators a way to separate tenant networking resources. Subnet and IP management, gateways, QoS, ACLs, and traffic mirroring add practical control over addressing, traffic treatment, and visibility. This breadth suits clusters with explicit isolation and policy requirements, while teams seeking an all-in-one CNI, ingress, service mesh, and observability stack should look elsewhere.

KubeVirt and integrations

Kube-OVN supports KubeVirt live migration without network interruption, a meaningful advantage for clusters that run virtual machines alongside containers. Documented integrations include Cilium, MetalLB, OpenStack, Submariner, and OVN interconnect. CNI chaining with Cilium combines Kube-OVN network abstractions with Cilium eBPF monitoring and security capabilities, which can suit teams already building around Cilium rather than replacing that layer.

Deployment and operations

One-click installation scripts are provided for building production-ready container networks. That can shorten initial setup, but it does not remove the need to check compatibility with the target environment. The project advises against use on OpenShift and public-cloud managed Kubernetes, as well as where an all-in-one networking and observability stack is required. Security reports are accepted by email, with a maintainer acknowledgement promised within three days; community discussion is available through Slack, and Alauda is linked for support.

Pricing

Kube-OVN — 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the open-source Kubernetes networking project under Apache-2.0. No paid tier, seat quota, usage cap, or trial terms are part of this offer. It fits teams prepared to deploy and operate the project themselves; the zero software price does not make it a managed service.

Platforms

Kube-OVN supports API, Linux, and self-hosted environments, with x86_64 and arm64 architecture support. Its deployment model is on-premises, its control plane is centralized, and supported protocols include Geneve, Vxlan, and STT. These attributes make it relevant to teams standardizing their own Kubernetes infrastructure, not those looking for a public-cloud managed deployment.

Who it's for

Kube-OVN is a strong candidate for Kubernetes operators building multi-tenant networks, especially when separate VPC address spaces, policy controls, or KubeVirt live migration matter. Its documented integrations also help teams coordinating networking with Cilium, MetalLB, OpenStack, or Submariner. It is a poor fit for OpenShift, managed public-cloud Kubernetes, and teams that want one product to cover CNI, ingress, service mesh, and observability together.

Pros and cons

Pro: VPCs with separate address spaces and tenant resources support meaningful network isolation.
Pro: KubeVirt live migration without network interruption addresses a specific operational need for virtualized workloads.
Pro: Broad network controls and integrations can accommodate more involved cluster networking requirements.
Pro: Apache-2.0 licensing and a free plan avoid software fees.
Con: The project advises against OpenShift and public-cloud managed Kubernetes, excluding common deployment targets.
Con: It is not positioned as an all-in-one CNI, ingress, service mesh, and observability stack.
Con: The centralized control plane and self-hosted model mean teams must account for operating the networking layer themselves.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Container Networking Software and Software-Defined Networking Software.

Canal is a free Apache-2.0 alternative for teams comparing Linux, macOS, API, and self-hosted platform support.
Spiderpool is another free, open-source Kubernetes networking solution for API, Linux, and self-hosted environments.
Antrea is a free Apache-2.0 option with Windows support; it requires a Kubernetes cluster and the Open vSwitch kernel module on every Kubernetes node.
OVN-Kubernetes is a free alternative with API, Linux, self-hosted, and Windows support.
Skupper is a free option with API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, and Windows support.
VMware Workstation Pro is free for Windows or Linux hosts on 64-bit Intel or AMD PCs, with no subscription or license key required.
Calico Open Source is free, community-driven, and supports unlimited clusters, with in-memory data retention.
Cilium is a free open-source Linux option requiring kernel 5.10 or equivalent on AMD64 or AArch64.

Verdict

Choose Kube-OVN when multi-tenant network separation or uninterrupted KubeVirt live migration is central to your Kubernetes design; its network controls and integrations make that case compelling. Look elsewhere if your target is OpenShift or public-cloud managed Kubernetes, or if you need a single all-in-one networking and observability stack.
